I had bought some DS-40 recorders. After receiving the recorders, I found that there were no carrying cases with them, so I purchased the cases for 2 reasons. 1 to protect them in case they should get dropped, and 2, a way to carry them in case you don't have a pocket (especially for the ladies if they don't have pockets), I use the DS-40 using an external microphone. With the case, it works out great. I don't know why Olympus does not include a case with the recorder.
