The Olympus ME-52W Noise Cancellation Microphone adds further versatility to your Olympus Digital Recorder (A WS-321M in my case).
The Microphone comes as part of a four piece kit that includes the microphone, a 1m long extension cable, a tie-clip style clothing clip and a foam wind screen that fits over the microphone.
The microphone itself is hinged above the 'mic/input' jack on the top of the recorder where it can be adjusted horizontally by rotating it in the jack and vertically through using a hinge incorporated at the microphone's base. This external mic provides far superior clarity and range over the WS-321M built-in microphone!
With the microphone inserted directly into the input jack it allows the user to hold the whole unit like a handle with the mic projected unimpeded out of the top. I found the mic very handy during news scrums and while taking personal notes as the risk of covering the recorder's built-in mic is eliminated.
The tie-clip mic holder is useful mainly when recording a stationary subject or when recording yourself when you need your hands free. It's very straightforward to use and easy to remove the mic from it quickly.
Lastly, the wind screen cap was also surprisingly useful. It really made a difference in sound clarity when recording in windy conditions and recording in a vehicle with the windows open or the top down.
All in all this is a very inexpensive purchase considering the value and versatility it adds to your recorder. Really a 'must have' if you're serious about the recordings you make.

I use this for recording interviews - it's easy, surprisingly good quality, and pretty much just what the situation calls for. I love the tiny windscreen - how cute is that. But it does what it says - let's you record what you need to in less than ideal situation. Big thumbs up.

Use when recording a speech from one specific person in a noisy background e.g. rebbes tisch. It filters out the noise, say goodbye to static... and gets the job done.

This is a great little add-on at a great price. Voice quality is identical to the (very good) on-board mike on the DS4000, but does a good job of cutting out extraneous noise. Even comes with a little foam windscreen and a good, sturdy lapel clip.

Cool little mic. I am able to plug it into a recorder inside my actor's pocket. It is mono; I don't know why someone below said it's stereo. Not a lot of noise, nor a lot of background sounds. It says uni-directional, but feels like it's omni-directional.
One thing I don't really like is the clip- I'd rather have the mic holder at the other end of the metal clip; like closer to the hinge. The lic is also kinda big.
But hey, it's cheap and I use it just fine.

A useful and good value for money microphone for recording conversations, etc.
The microphone is big for a lapel microphone, but considering the price it provides good quality recordings

I use the DM-520 voice recorder to record my sermons as I present them so I can later upload them to our church's website. I needed a clip-on microphone to use with the recorder to make sure that my sermons were recorded clearly with little background noise. The ME-52W microphone does just that!
I appreciate the design of the microphone that allows me to use a longer or shorter cord as needed.
In the past I have found that the part of a microphone that always fails is the cord. A failed cord usually results in a repair bill to get the cord replaced. Olympus, by utilizing a plug-in cord system, makes it easy to replace the cord myself.
If you have a handheld recorder and need to use it to record a presentation that you give, I highly recommend this microphone as a needed accessory.

The Olympus digital voice recorder (WS-400S) is a great stereo reorder. With the ME-52W Noise Cancellation Microphone the recorder is a fabulous dictating machine as well as a conference recording device. The microphone is small, sensitive, excellent and effective. It comes with several attachments that make it ideal for many, many uses.

Comments about Olympus ME-52W Noise Cancellation Microphone:
The microphone does the job, albeit not in stereo. That it's part of a package including extension cord, alligator clip and wind-damping microphone cover makes the price attractive.
Yes, there are better microphones on the market, but if you travel light, as I do on assignment, the whole package can fit in your front shirt pocket along with the Olympus voice recorder.
It would be hard to beat this deal.

Comments about Olympus ME-52W Noise Cancellation Microphone:
I use this together with my Olympus WS-331M.
In a lecture setting the Microphone gives about 10% more quality than the build-in microphone of my voice recorder. Thats not much but given the physical limitations when recording lectures I am happy about any improvement I can get. I could not make out any noice cancellation qualities. Technically noice cancellation means it detects noise and calculates it away from the incoming signals. The Microphone has no hard and software to accomplish this. However as I mentioned earlier there is a quality improvement. It seems to come from the Microphone being directional which means it focusses on wherever it is pointed at and Background noise from other directions does not reach the the inside of the Microphone.

Used the first time for recording bride and groom at outdoor wedding. Wind noise was a problem. Olympus should include or make replaceable foam wind screens available. Other than wind the microphone is sensitive and worked quite well.
