The Canon LP-E4 Rechargeable Lithium-ion Battery, has a capacity of 2300 mAh, so it is possible to shoot up to 2200 shots at normal temperatures on a single battery charge. The battery is also more compact and lighter in weight than previous battery models.
The LP-E4 Battery also communicates with the EOS-1D Mark III, EOS-1Ds Mark III & 1D Mark IV so that you can always check the remaining capacity (marks in six levels and percentage in 1% increments), shutter count and recharge performance (3 levels) on the camera's power source info screen.

I once read a post indicating the battery manufacturer that supplies Canon with 1D OEM batteries, and also Nikon with their OEM batteries. Since then, I have seen two other articles indicating two different companies that supply Canon with their 1D batteries. I also see many websites offering third-party aftermarket batteries as OEM. Clearly, the aftermarket industry does not understand this term.
So, rather than mislead you by indicating the wrong manufacturer, I will tell you that you are better off spending the money on a Canon brand OEM battery. It may cost a few dollars more, but you know what you are getting, and you get what you pay for.
Aftermarket batteries may sound like a great deal at [supposedly] a higher milliamp/hour rating and half the cost, but the truth is that you will often get half the performance. My experience with aftermarket batteries is that they don't last through the shoot as long [even though they have a higher power rating], they don't hold a charge as well when idle, and they fail to hold a charge or to charge at all after only a fraction of the recycles as a Canon brand battery.
Two years is my benchmark for rechargeable batteries. If a battery lasts two years, then I feel that I got my money's worth. I have Canon batteries that are still going strong after four years, and I have aftermarket batteries that failed to charge or hold a charge in less than one year.
I have yet to change out my LP-E4 battery on a shoot [or in a single day] with my 1D Mark III mounted with a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens, and a shot count in the thousands. I only keep a spare handy for those few times where I do something stupid, like put off charging for a day and then discover that I forgot to turn off my camera at the end of the previous day… It happens, and this is why you have to have a spare. A must have item that you will [probably] never use.
So, the question you must ask yourself is, "do I risk missing a priceless shot in the future in order to save a few dollars today?" Your answer will define your category: expert or amateur.

Comments about Canon LP-E4 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery:
Shooting with a Canon 1DS mark III, I need a battery that will not fail. I have wasted a few dollars on off-brand replacement batteries, but they always fail and end up in the battery recycling bin after a very short time frame. Spend your money wisely, go with this battery and you can't go wrong! Money well spent.

A single charge of this battery lasted almost three days of shooting with about 30GB worth of images. No LCD info display, frequent chimping, some long exposures with timer, a few videos.

As a pro I font want to take chances with batteries from 3rd party makers. Canon batteries do the job, hold good power and are reliable.

Comments about Canon LP-E4 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery:
The battery performed as good as my original batter. I bought this battery so as to maximize the performance of my main battery, allowing me to fully utilize the main battery and have one to swap when depleted. I use my 1D everyday and sometimes I don't have to charge the battery for a week.

I needed another spare and pondered getting aftermarket, but aside from the price, I love that it lasts forever and fits perfectly with a good weather seal. I'd rather not hazard my very expensive camera with a poor fitting battery! I got well over 5,000 shots on a 1d3 with this battery recently.

I shoot 2 and 3 day events and rely on a 2nd battery! So far this battery has not let me down. They last most of the day, but I never worry about running out of power since I have a back up. As a pro, 2 batteries are a must!

I had forgotten how long this battery lasted. I've been using my 1D Mk3 for about 4 years now and average about 3-4K shots a month. I was charging my battery about once a week but now, with a new battery, I'm charging once every two to three weeks. Nothing like a new battery! Life is good again!

Like to have a backup battery even though can get 1500 or so pictures from one charge. Great batteries except large and heavy.

I purchased simply to have an obligatory extra battery for my 1D Mark III, the original battery lasts through an entire day of shooting so it really isn't needed much. This battery is just about perfect!

Comments about Canon LP-E4 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery:
I use the Canon 1D Mark IV camera with the LP-E4 battery. I'd tried several after market brand replacement batteries and they just don't hold a charge as well and don't last as long as the Canon original batteries. I finally broke down and bought the real thing as my back up battery. Had I purchased this product in the first place it would have been less expensive than buying the three cheaper ones and saved lots of time and headaches. If you stick with Canon, you can't go wrong.

I made a terrible mistake and went out on a shoot without my battery. The second battery does not weigh much, and having it in my camera case will save me the embarrassment I suffered without a battery.

I purhcased the battery as a back-up / second batter for my Mark IV. Having a second battery is critically important when out in the field taking pictures. The battery life exceeded my expectations.

This battery lasts a long time. Gets us through a whole day of shooting. Fits several of our cameras thus allowing room to carry different lens instead of having to carry lots of different batteries.
