The JumpStart series of DVDs for digital cameras and camcorders are well produced and informative. This latest addition to the series is inexpensive and a suitable selection for someone who is quite new to camcorder operation.
The main menu offers two selections. First is a "5 minutes to get shooting" option, which could capture the fleeting attention of the "shoot, then learn" group. Offering practical advice it touches on useful topics like basic setup and how to operate a camcorder.
The second selection is the gateway to the more detailed (approx 1 hour) information called "Shooting and Producing Great Videos." The DVD takes you on a tour of a camcorder's features, helps you understand what the camera's menu selections mean, learn how to adjust white balancing, suggests how to capture dynamic images, and emphasizes the importance of audio to your audience. The final chapter presents a short demo video of a visit to Vancouver's Granville Island Market to illustrate how a short interesting video can be shot and editing together with good audio and some music.
Hightly recommended for someone new to camcorders, and also recommended as a gift for someone who has been shooting awhile but who doen't learn easily from their mistakes.

Sometimes it seems more for an advertisement of camcoder accessories than learning for basics.

As an amateur this software has helped me do a pretty good job. I have gotten pretty good feedback from my more experienced friends on the editing I have done.

This is simple and straight forward, nothing fancy, but it contains some good tips and tricks and would be especially good for someone with no filming experience. Tho' I must add, that after making a 55 min home movie, with a steep learning curve, and after reading lots of DIY film books, this did teach me some stuff I didn't know, and that will make my films better.
If you are just beginning, this is worth watching.

Very concise guide for beginners to video cameras, from operation, to filiming, to editing. Experienced videographers like myself may get some great tips as well. (I learned how to use 'manual white balance' properly after 4 yrs of assuming I knew)
I liked the comparison of different kinds of microphones you can use with your camera, very useful to hear the end result of using different kinds of mics to guide your purchase.

Great video that explains all the basics of recording video including lighting, shutter speed, white balance, digital effects, and much more.
Definately worth the small investment (I got it free from B&H with purchase of a camcorder). If you are a beginner, an aspiring filmaker, or want to get more serious about your home videos you will learn some great tips and techniques.

Very good introductory video - not just for beginners. This video came bundled with a camcorder I purchased and was therefore free. I guess if I were a new user I would purchase it. It's well laid out and informative without being overbearing and too technical.
Comments about MasterWorks DVD: Jumpstart Guide to Shooting and Producing Better Videos:
This is very basic training, which can be helpful if you've never shot video or had any training. Has some incorrect information (Adding a neutral density filter decreases depth of field, not increases.) It's amusing that some of the shots in the section about using a tripod to look professional are shot handheld. [...]

Reading the manual is one thing but actually seeing and listening helps you to retain more infomation. I learnt more from the video then reading the manual.
