Comments about MasterWorks DVD: JumpStart Guide to The Sony HDR-FX7:
I bought this DVD mainly for the section on Menus. The Sony HDR-FX7 is a great camera and is fairly easy to operate but I needed help with all the menu options and this DVD is doing it for me. The material is easy to understand, concise and illustrates what the speaker is talking about. The 5 chapters cover a camera tour, menus, taking better video, audio for video, and post production. The first DVD I ordered had a glitch on Chapter 2, Menus and froze up on that chapter. [...]

The DVD: Jump start guide for the Sony HDR-FX7 is no better then the video that comes with the camera. It ended up being a waste of my money. Period.

I recieved this and another dvd for free when I purchased my FX7. It showed alot of the buttons and also "very briefly" what they can do. I think they should have indeed spent more time on the functions of the camera than basic techniques such as different types of mics and the like.. If I remember correctly, they also give tips on shooting, which could have been left out also..
For the functions of the camera, yes, they indeed do cover it pretty well. I can't honestly think of much that wasn't.. But I also feel they should have taken more time on some of the topics and not flown through them..
Overall, I like the disc and have watched it a few times over the months, each time noticing something new on the menu portion, but then again, I didn't have to pay extra for the disc.
I would say if you have to purchase it, it is steep for an intro to the camera, but at the same time, it does go into the functions and menu s so for that I believe it is good....

There are tons of features to coveron the HDR-FX7, and I'll bet theydidn't miss any on this DVD. Many buttons and menu items get a very speedy mention, but at least you're made aware of what you can do. There is also a lot of bonus generic material about shooting techniques and accessories for all types of camcorders. As the narrator speaks off camera, animated text mirrors his every word. To me, this comes across as an amateurish and unnecessary technique, especially since each sentence disappears before you have a chance to read it (very irritating). Keep your finger on the pause button if you want to read the captions!I find the FX7's free PDF manual to be a better (and searchable) learning tool.
Expertise: Prosumer
Problems Encountered: The chapters are lengthy and there is no way to advance within a chapter - i.e. to search for a certain menu item. If you press NEXT on your remote, you jump clear to the next chapter. Finding the info you want is too much of a chore.

I picked up the Jumpstart Guide to the FX7 when I bought the camera and I have to say, it was a HUGE help!I had a video shoot the day after I bought the camera and I was able to figure out even some of the features that are difficult to find. It shows every tiny feature of the camera and makes it easy to customize the settings before you go out and shoot. I'd recommend this title for anyone that wants a crash course in videography.
