I recently got a nice LCD TV and realized that I had more component sources than inputs. I needed a new receiver that would take as many HD inputs as I could throw at it and funnel it all into one HDMI output. I also wanted it to sound nice, but I assumed that if it had HDMI upconverting, it wouldn't be a slouch in the audio department. The Sony STR-DG910 performs quite well in these respects. I can switch between my cable box and my Xbox 360 with the push of a single button (and a wait of about 6 seconds). My only problem was that it only had the 3 component inputs and I still have 4 component devices. It'll be less of a problem when I upgrade my 360 to an HDMI model, but for now I actually have to break out the tV remote and change the TV input to use my Wii. Still, that's not really the receiver's fault.
Contrary to what you may have heard, there IS an on screen display option. It's kinda hidden in the "Video" menu and will only output through HDMI or composite video. Makes things a little easier to set up, though, especially for someone who hasn't upgraded their surround receiver in about 10 years. It puts out some very nice sound once you manually adjust the levels, etc. Physically, it's smaller than my old receiver, so it actually fits in my entertainment center, which is a plus. Even when it's being put through its paces for hours on end, it doesn't seem to heat up very much...even when it's behind a closed glass door with limited ventilation.
Makes my life a lot easier, sounds great and shouldn't need to be left behind for an upgrade for quite a while. At this price (cheapest price for this model I could find on the internet) it's a great deal!

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
This receiver is great for your average user. Nothing to fancy about it. The HDMI upconversion is great. Cable, DVD, VCR, game system all go into the receiver and then one HDMI cable goes to the TV. All you have to switch is the input on the receiver. I was even able to put away my Sony tv remote because the receiver remote controls it perfectly. The automatic surround sound setup with the microphone is another helpfull feature. Trying to figure out all of the sound settings can be confusing. With this, you just set the microphone where you sit and tell it to program the system. It works great.

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
I already had a nice receiver, an older Denon. I bought this Sony so that I could route all my components through the receiver and control them with one remote. This goal was accomplished! The Sony works great. The manual is very helpful with all the different connections and I am very happy with the automatic sound calibration of the speakers. I never really had true surround sound on my system before, but am very happy with the results. [...]

This receiver is the right choice for anyone that is looking for power, theater sound, quality and performance for under $400. I have my HD DVD Player and Playstation 3 connected to the receiver with HDMI cables and then out to the TV with another HDMI cable. The sound quality and picture quality are absolutely amazing.

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
This product is ideal for the average consumer who wants to step up to hi-def and multi-channel sound. Three HDMI inputs and one HDMI output make setup simple, and the auto calibration simplifies speaker balance. The remote and the manual are pretty complex, but a little patience will get you through it. For the money, it's a great performer.

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
I bought this receiver so I would be able to run fewer wires through the wall for my new LCD TV. The STR-DG910 is the least-expensive receiver I could find that featured 3 HDMI inputs and video upconversion (analog to HDMI) so my TV could use only one HDMI for all of my inputs. The Sony works perfectly with regard to those features.
What I didn't realize, however, is that while analog video is upconverted to HDMI, the analog audio is not. This prevents me from using only one HDMI for all of TV viewing needs; any analog input will require an analog output to get the audio to the TV. This would be lees of an issue if I had speaker attached to the receiver, but I do not for now.
All in all, this was a great buy, and I am really pleased with the included features.

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
The DG910 is a great buy, especially at such a low price. I use it for everything from music, streaming directly from my PC via optical input, to movies, and video games. I have an Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and HiDef cable box all hooked up to it with HDMI cables (thanks to the 3 hdmi inputs, and one output). it even up converts video signals from my regular composite inputs to 1080p (noticeable improvement). It is not the easiest to use, thanks to its limited display. That said, it is imperative that you read the instruction manual to take full advantage of all the benefits this stereo has to offer. The auto-calibration feature works very well, and makes setup very easy, though I highly recommend find-tuning sound levels to your personal liking. All and all, this receiver offers the best performance for the money. In my honest opinion, you'd have to spend over [$]to get something that would be noticeably better. B&H are selling this [$]less than other retailers, [...]

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
Used with Sony KDL-40XBR4 LCD TV for a bedroom home theater to integrate a satellite DVR, and eventually Blu-ray disk player. The receiver manual is daunting, wich made me call Sony support to set the system up to enable the DVR to play on the TV. I had to select SAT[telite] and not TV to make it work.
Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
I dont usually write reviews, but i appreciate reading them. this product motivates me to write this one. it does the job far better than i expected. it wasnt difficult to set up and the sound clarity is impressive. it is significantly better than the old onkyo reciever i had. my direc tv hd receiver/recorder hdmi doesnt work (ever) so i output video over component video cables. this Sony upgrades the video and i see a clearly noticeable improvement in the tv picture. the only negative i have is the control is not easily usable as a universal remote. i programed my current remote and it works fine.

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
I have had this receiver for a little over a week now andlet me say I am not at all disappointed. The only thing thatis my HD cable box does not support HDMI repeaters. Atleast this receiver up converts the component signal.Somehow this receiver links up with my PS3 and automaticallyknows the best sound. I had no idea my speakers could soundso good until I hooked up.
Expertise: Moderate
Problems Encountered: Only complaint I have about the receiver is the on screenmenu is very old looking and leaves much to be desired.

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
I was never a big fan of Sony products, but considering most other brands of receivers only offer HDMI video passthru, there wasn't alot to choose from without spending a fortune. I found this one and another cheaper model Sony AV receiver that offers full 1080p as well as full digital sound through the one HDMI cable. I did a little research and found mostly good reviews, so I took the plunge. Needless to say, I'm glad I did. I'm very impressed with the overall quality and sound. The OSD or menu could've used a little more help in ease of use. Sound quality with both music and movies is just as good as the aging Pioneer Elite reciever that it replaced. It just has a tad bit more aignes in the highs compared to the Elite model. Maybe, with more break in, it will smooth itself out. Overall, I'm very happy and don't regret purchasing at all.

Comments about Sony STR-DG910 770W 7.1-Channel A/V Receiver:
A Decent receiver for the price. It has sufficient power for the size. Love the 2X HDMI. Sounds Great!
Expertise: Intermediate hobbyist
Problems Encountered: The HDMI do not seem to send sound, only video. Had very hard time getting to work and never got sound to come out through the HDMI.The menu setup is rather involved and difficult. The speaker nodes are sensitive and tend to trip to built-in breaker if you don't use banana clips. The User manual is lacking in How To for simpled tasks.I bought it to keep my components the same brand, and boy do I regret it.
