I use it for photo with a fairly heavy dSLR. Not sure it would be good for a video camera. It's not designed for that.
What's great about it? Well, it does what it says. With minimal effort you move the camera around. Release the grip, and that sucker holds on. It doesn't creep even with my heaviest lens, and ol Minolta "Beer Can", but it may with anything more weighty than that. For most uses it is strong enough.
Gripes? Well, I don't much like the quick release. It holds the camera still, for sure, but I like the spring loaded kind. No big deal. I also wish they would have made the base a larger diameter so it would be easier to tighten down. And those are the only reasons I gave it four stars rather than five.
I think most photographers using a 35mm-sized camera would be happy to own this, but most will probably see the brand and move on without considering it. That's a shame.

Comments about Sunpak Pistol Grip Ballhead:
Recently bought this pistol grip at a local camera shop. After using it, don't know why I waited so long to try one, other than the cost as pistol grips are usually quite pricey. I used this grip with a nearly 50 year old Kowa 35mm SLR which is quite large, solid metal and very Heavy. Handled it with no issues at all. I have very small hands and had no problems at all with squeezing the grip. Wish the turn ring on the bottom of the camera base plate was bigger though. Will keep a very small pair of pliers in the cam bag to solve that problem. Set up is Very quick and easy. I use it on a professional Promaster Tripod. I'm quite pleased with with this pistol grip.

Solid, just wish the removeable mount was a little bigger and had reverse tension on the threading post. Otherwise, great deal!

Incredible strength shown while holding a gripped Canon 5D with a 70-200 2.8 Sigma lens. Hang on when you release the grip because it releases with ease. I wondered if I was wasting my money buying one in this price range but I am more than satisfied with this Ballhead.

Comments about Sunpak Pistol Grip Ballhead:
The only reason I give this 4 stars rather than 5 is that for a right hander it is difficult to have one hand on the pistol grip and one on the camera controls. If I was going to use this everyday I would spring for the Manfrotto which can be set up on the left side.

Our photographers like the Pistol Grip. They use the Pistor Grip with the JVC HM100 camera system for hand-held. When shooting from a tripod, the photographers attach the Pistol Grip to the tripod head using the quick disconnects.

I bought this to use with a Manfrotto 294 4-section monopod and have been very pleased. While I would have preferred a slightly shorter design, I wasn't willing to spring for the higher price that it would have required. Having used this for a couple weeks now, I can say that I am very happy with my choice. It works very well, with plenty of capacity for my usual camera/lens combinations and the action is smooth. The grip is tall, but that's not a problem in daily use, and I can simply detach it when I need the monopod's length cut down to accomodate packing in a carry-on sized case.

This Ballhead from Sunpak is a novel idea. It's great because it is speedy with the adjustments and locks immediately and stays in place holding my Canon 7D and zoom lense. Attaching to my tripod was so easy> Just what the doctor ordered.

I use this pistol grip when I make pictures of Golden and Bald Eagles while riding in a gyrocopter at treetop level along the Mississippi River to overcome the difficulty with aiming a telephoto lens at a moving object. Another use is to transform my older tripod into a best friend. It may not be lightweight, but for the money, I am quite pleased with it.

Comments about Sunpak Pistol Grip Ballhead:
I'm not easily impressed by trivial things. I have a high standard for gear and my general sense is 'he who buys cheap buys twice.'
So, ordinarily, I would never have bought this because Sunpak (and Vivitar, and Quantaray) are known quantities of amateur gear. This was a gift because I, like a fool, would have assumed I needed manfrotto's $160 version. I would have been wrong.
This is a great piece of gear. I just shot my 6th wedding with it and I couldn't be happier, still. If you had asked me if I wanted to pay eight bucks a use and would it be worth it, I would have said "is that all?" and as it turns out, I'm pretty sure it's gonna stay together.
Couldn't be happier, no buggaboos, and especially not at forty bucks. Combined with the Giotti Vitruvian this is the best multi-use and realworld tripod you can get at any price, let alone sub-$200.

Comments about Sunpak Pistol Grip Ballhead:
We have many users of our digital SLR. This forces them to grip firmly to adjust. Adjustments are easier and safer than our old ball head. We did have to add a small tape shim to make sure the cam lock securely fastened the removable base plate. Easy fix.
