Current Mark II version has AF that is supported by D40 and D60 cameras.

I got this lens after visiting the San Diego Zoo and wanting just a little more tele than my Nikon 18-200 could afford. I wanted to find a lens that I could take for an outing, and perhaps have it exclusively for the day. For this sort of excursion, sacrificing the wide end is an OK trade off.
This lens pretty much does what other reviewers have said. It's light and operates well. The vibration compensation worked well. Sometimes the focus searches a bit more than I am used to, but it's not too bad. It seems sharp enough for my purposes, although others have shown that it's not quite as tack sharp as a similar Nikon lens. But who else has this range of zoom? It's great to have the freedom this one lens affords. And you can focus up close too, a bonus. If I have one real beef it's that the images seem a bit cool, tending to go a little blue. Easily compensated for with software.
I didn't have a problem with lens creep; perhaps I will after the lens 'breaks in' a bit. But the lock to keep the lens compact is a good idea.
There was one oddity - when operating the zoom I found it got quite stiff around the 200mm area. I spoke to someone at Tamron who said this is common with this lens and is nothing to worry about. I figured as much, I just wanted to hear it from someone who knows.
For what I wanted, this lens fits the bill. I'm very glad I got it.

I used to shoot with a D200 and a 18-200 AFS VRII.
I was so happy with that stuff that I was looking for the same range for my D700 and because of Full Frame there was only this TAMRON VC available.
- First I was surprised with the noise of the AF, because it is not AFS equivalent.
- The lens is not so good in the corners at 28mm with my D700 at each aperture (made for DX?).
But it is nice at 35mm (for the corners).
- The lens is good in the middle of the frame and 75% around.
- Anyway, not as good as the 18-200 nikkor on the D200. But a full frame 28 300 is really difficult to produce I guess. The Canon model is so more expensive. So : what you get is what you pay.
The VC (VR equivalent) is really good, but there is only one VC mode (two on the 18-200).
My conclusion is: I use it with the D700 in any situation as I used my last couple D200 and 18-200.
I can produce the same quality of prints (not at 28mm in the corners, but you don't shoot ladies' face at 28mm in corners, right?).
I think that You can see the sharp difference watching your pictures at 100% on your computer screen. But you won't probably see any difference on your prints.
This is an excellent lens for everyday familly shooting or travelling. But if you want WORK with a good lens in every situation buy the Nikkor 24-70 2.8 AFS (what a lens), and why not the 70-300 AFS VR that is not so expensive but sharper.
I'm saving money for better lenses, but honestly, I don't know if I will keep this TAMRON.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD II Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens:
Slow as molasses, but I knew that when I bought it and work around that. I have shot outside in natural light, in my kitchen with wretched compact fluorescents and in my studio with strobes and gotten good results with all three. The studio ones were real good. The VC is noisy but seems to work. I have the version of this lens from 10 years ago and love it, except at full extension, and bought this for the VC.
Focus is slower than I would like. Some searching, but not sure if that is the camera or lens.
Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD II Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens:
Awesome lens ! Great tool . Comes with sun shade that you can mount in reverse to store out of the way and still have full use of the lens. Has a lock so the lens won't drift open and extended when you have the camera on your shoulder. Lens fully useable when lock is on, it just locks the lens at 28mm which is a comfortable setting most of the time anyway.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD II Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens:
This is a great, "all-purpose" lens. I shoot mainly nature and I really like the fact that this lens can do macro work as well. The only negative things I have noticed is the auto focus is a little slow and sometimes 'searches' for a focal point in low light conditions.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD II Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens:
I loved my Tamron 28-300 without VC so I purchased this one for my Nikon D90. At first it worked just fine, I loved it but then it just stopped working. All three lenses I had seemed to have a problem after a few weeks. Thought it was my camera so I had it repaired. No problem with camera. I ended up paying double the price for the Nikon 28-300 but it's heavy and I don't think it's as sharp as the Tamron for the money I'd choose the Tamron but unfortunately I don't have that choice. Wonder if other Nikon users had same problem???

My first stabilized lens, this thing is so nice. I've had the non-VC 28-300 for some time. This one snaps into focus. At times a bit slow but still worth every penny.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD II Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens:
I own a Nikon D700 with a 28-70mm 2.8 lens. I needed a lens that would cover the 70-300mm range and this lens just fits the bill. I have used it in several occasions outdoors and I'm blown away by the Image Quality that this lens brings to the table. It's not a fast lens and it's limited to a f6.3 opening on the 300mm range but it suits my purpose of taking outdoor shots of games and events where ther is plenty of ambient lighting. It focuses slow indoors when there is not enough light but it works great with my SB900 flash. It's a nice walkaround lens because it's not heavy and not as long as my other lenses when the lens lock is engaged. I did not experience any lens creep as the other reviews I read. Overall, it's a good lens for the money I spent on it and I highly recommend it to budget strapped photography enthusiast like me.

totally impressed with the VC capability of this lens, and the clarity that it maintains with or without it on. I also own the Nikon 18-200VR and this one blows it away. Also adding the D700 is a big boost, but one of the most satisfied purchases I have made.

Generally good quality lens, with optics as expected for price and f-stop; but easy to carry around all day as tourist, with better than expected results!
Well-constructed for price point.

I like this lens. It is nice to have wide range of focal lengths. The lens is heavy but I got use to it quickly. The lock on the lens is good, I don't have to worry about the lens creep. The focus is fast and consistent. I have gotten a lot of great photos from this lens in the short time I have had it (action, macro, outdoors and indoor) The only thing that has come up is that a couple of times my camera gave me an error message that the lens was not attached and I never had that problem with my other lenses.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD II Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens:
This is one of the best walkaround, do-everything lenses I've used. Optically it's as good as zoom Nikkors of similar price, but considering none have the extreme tele range of this one, this Tamron is a clear winner. Vibration control is much better than Nikkor VR in my opinion, which I'm sad to say because I think Nikon is going to lose out if its consumer lenses don't start coming up to competitive standards.
Only one thing to note is pronounced distortion typical for this type of lens - barrel at the short end and pincushion at the longer end. However, it's more easily corrected in Photoshop than similar Nikkors which have more complex distortion especially at the short end, such as the 24-120 AF and AF-S and 28-200 AF in my usage of those lenses.

I think this will be wonderful to just have this one lens for multi functions. I haven't had much chance to test the VC; but I am looking forward to using it on whale watching trips next month. I am sure it will be a huge help in timing shots and eliminating most of the "missed it again" factor!!!

Works with the AF-s system Nikon Cameras
Takes Sharp pictures.
I have no issues with the speed of the Auto focus.
Its a over all must have for someone that's one
lens that does everything.
The Vibration reduction function clunks and is loud. It takes some getting used to.

Comments about Tamron 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC LD II Aspherical IF Macro Autofocus Lens:
The focal length range of this lens is great as a walk around lens for a full-frame camera like the D700. At f/6.3 is it a little slow and can have trouble autofocusing in some conditions. Shooting moving subjects in bright light is OK, but can be a problem in less light. The VC seems to work well.

Nikon D80, Tried two separate lenses of the same make model, found it noisy, jumpy, and often failed to work at all. Not satisfactory in this camera, to my way of thinking. Sometimes the motor would just run continuously, without focusing.
When it did lock on, clear enough, I guess. Prefer my Nikon 18x200 a LOT!
