The Axis Communications AXIS 291 rack module accommodates up to three AXIS Video Blade Servers, which can be the single or 4-port versions, but not the 6-port model. When populated with three 4-port Blades, this unit can be used to interface 12 analog CCTV cameras with the network.
Blade Servers can be installed in any combination of three, and because of its support for hot swapping, Blades can also be removed or replaced without first powering down the unit.
The Server Rack also doesn't need to be fully populated in order for it to work, but is fully functional even with only one or two Blades installed. A single Ethernet port connects the Server Rack to the network, with additional ports in the back of each slot, providing alarm I/O connection and remote PTZ communication for each attached camera. The Server Rack also provides power for each installed Blade. This Server Rack together with AXIS Blades provides the necessary migration from analog to digital technology.

- Hot Swappable
- The Video Rack server accepts up to three AXIS Blades, in any combination. With support for hot swapping, blades can be removed or replaced without first having to power down the unit. This will allow users in a busy CCTV environment to move blades from one server to another or swap an installed blade for one that is more appropriate for a particular camera.
- Unlike standalone AXIS Servers, this unit was designed for easy expansion. A security facility, for instance, can start out with a single 1-port Blade and as surveillance requirements grow, install additional Blades, with not only more video ports, but also higher resolution and other security enhancing features.
- Remote PTZ Control
- In the back of each slot is an RS-485 communication port, providing remote PTZ control for connected analog cameras.
- Alarm I/O Ports
- Each slot also provides alarm I/O ports for each connected camera. This will allow connected cameras to receive and send alarm alerts over the network as with a real network camera.
