I absolutely love this tripod. It’s superbly well made, has that professional “heft”, feel and sturdiness, all of which scream “professional”.
Also, all of its actions are butter-smooth, though the feel is tight, not sluggish and it has none of that wobbliness that is quite common to other tripod models.
It’s nice to the touch, with its “leg warmers” and the alloy also feels light and sturdy.
I really like the quickness of its flip-levered secured locks
It’s superbly sturdy, VERY tall, even without extending the middle column, which could also be reduced in size by unscrewing half of it.
I used it for night time photography and managed to get absolutely sharpest images that I could hope to get.
Even though tripod is rated to support up to 15 Lbs, its manufacturer’s website states that it is designed to withstand weights in excess of its maximum allowable weight – a nice touch, considering that other manufacturers can hardly make such a claim. Theirs (frequently costing a few times more) rarely can exceed their rated max. allowable weight and are often designed to support far less.
Having said that, my 780DX Pro easily supported my favorite combo of now older 20D (with a battery grip) and my prized EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM telephoto zoom lens – both of which aren’t exactly light (6.2 Lbs).
Then, as a real-life test, I added my L-Bracket with additional A-A battery pack (fully loaded) and a Speedlite 580EX II flash – all of which was sufficient enough to test tripod’s performance, given that the total weight of the “load” actually started to almost approach tripod’s rated limit, but with a little extra weight to spare. It still felt rock-solid.
I need to add that I took off its stock 3-Way Head and replaced it with another Slik’s ball-head that I took of my monopod. This combo performed flawlessly and I absolutely love it.
Personally for me, tripod’s weight is no real problem, since that’s what adds to the stability.
I’d highly recommend this tripod to anyone looking for a real sturdy support -- for the money it’s the best buy and can’t be beat!

This tripod would be great for use around the house and yard, but if you plan to use it for landscape photography buy something else. This is a hefty tripod, one of the reasons I bought it, but it has given me plenty of headaches in the field. I did one shoot on a beach and some sand got on the legs, imagine that, I wiped them down but it still got inside and made it nearly impossible to extend the legs until I disassembled the whole unit, cleaned it and put it back together again. I did another shoot along a stream, fall colors/waterfall stuff, and the legs somehow held water inside and leaked it out for weeks. The quick release camera mount is poorly designed and not really quick at all! You macro guys will want to look elsewhere as well. This tripod is slow to level on uneven ground, and if you want to shoot low, forget about it.

Comments about Slik Pro 780DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:
This tripod is used mostly for attaching a spotting scope to. It is sturdy, easy to adjust, solid and steady. I also use it for night scoping planets and the moon, for which I need a particularly stable and steady head, which this provides. There is no creep no matter at what angle I have the scope. Weight, in this case, is not a con but a benefit for it adds stability.

This is my second Slik tripod I've purchased, and I am very happy with both of them. I already owned a 340DX, but, I wanted something more substantial to hold my SLR and those expensive L lenses.

Comments about Slik Pro 780DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:
I use this primarily for nature photography (landscapes and wildlife) as well as cityscapes and occasionally a portrait.
It is very, very sturdy. I have not yet had the privilege to use a more sturdy tripod. It has noticeable weight but it's hardly too heavy to deal with. Properly stowed, this can be taken on a hike. After all, there's no point in taking a flimsy tripod on a hike and not getting the photo you went there for in the first place. I'm sure some 4x as expensive carbon fiber tripod would do better but if you wanted to spend that much you wouldn't be reading this review.
The tripod head is good enough. It will probably be the one and only pan-head I ever buy (unless I get rich and move up a tier in gear) and that's a good thing. I like panheads and this one is pretty good. It's sturdy and moves fluidly. The quick release sits tightly and I have no concerns of the camera falling out. The adjustability of the various knobs is great. The only one thing, and this is an extremely tiny thing, I've noticed is that when the panning knob (rotating on Y axis) is loosened it allows a tiny bit of play forward/backwards that you would never notice if you weren't abusing the panhead like I am and pretending it's a gimbal.
So I really don't have anything bad to say about this. It's not "bad" that it lacks certain features. If you wanted spiked feet or a lighter build then you will be sad, but that's nothing negative about this product.
I'd buy it again if I lost it.

I had a tripod in the past which I used occasionally. My interest in HDR and macro photography has prompted this purchase and I am very pleased with this product. I have combined 2 purchases and ended up with 4 tripods. Besides the item being reviewed, I also purchased a Joby Gorillapod Focus/Ballhead X Bundle. This allows me to swap heads between the two units which can be handy

Comments about Slik Pro 780DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:
I was looking for an extra tall tripod so I could stop leaning over to use the view finder on my camera. My camera gear is also very heavy, "70-200mm lens" so I needed a tripod that could handle the extra weight and not sway. This tripod was advertised to meet those requirements, and does in fact meet them.

Comments about Slik Pro 780DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:
Tripod is just what I wanted but when I took it out of the package I heard something rattling around in the leg. I knew it was a bad sound and when I pulled the foot off it, a spring that looked like the kind that goes inside a ballpoint click pen fell out. It didn't look important and so far it's been working just fine. I can't imagine that a spring like that would actually do anything useful. However, I wasn't pleased that I had to open it and find that. It's a little unnerving to trust many thousands of dollars worth of gear on something like this, but I just can't afford the time to send this back for a replacement. Maybe Slik needs to work on its quality control a little more.

This is a nice, well-built tripod. Perfect for buyers who don't have the time or concern to shop through hundreds of combinations of legs/heads.
The tripod isn't light (surely not for hiking) but it is very sturdy and well built.
The unit includes levels, easily adjustable legs, etc.

I went into this purchase knowing the tripod would be heavy, being 6'4" not many tripods are capable of being stable at heights i like to shoot at. This tripod holds a lot of camera weight at full height with tons of stability. Definitely a great purchase.

At 6'5", I was looking for an extra tall tripod so I could stop leaning over to use the view finder on my camera. My camera rig is also very heavy, so I needed a tripod that, even at full extension, could handle the extra weight and not sway. This tripod was advertised to meet those requirements, and does in fact meet them.
It doesn't pack down as much as I would like for convenience of travel, but that was a known sacrifice I was making for height and strength.

Comments about Slik Pro 780DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:
I'm fairly new to photography and was looking for a good quality tripod to support my digital SLR that didn't break the bank. After reading the positive reviews on B&H and elsewhere I decided on the Pro 780DX. I think I made a good choice as this tripod seems very well-built and rock solid for the price. The three position quick-lock legs make it easy to set up the tripod in any configuration. The leg padding keeps you from damaging the legs (and other things around you). The center mast has a double tightening mechanism on it to prevent it from accidentally sliding down. The head seems well built, easy to adjust and maneuver, and likely to last a long time. The added quick release safety mechanism is nice to have just in case. And the leveling bubbles are a nice feature. The only downside, aside from the heavy weight (which I knew going in) is it's a bit big and awkward to carry around. But the included carrying bag helps make that task a little easier. Overall, this seems like a quality product that should last many years and for the price will be hard to beat.

Comments about Slik Pro 780DX Tripod with 3-Way Head:
This tripod is a superb, high quality piece of equipment. The craftsmanship, fit, finish, and functionality make it a top value for the price.
Legs lock in solid at the desired height. No creeping after lock in. It will extend high enough for step ladder use, while remaining remarkably stable at maximum height. The cushioned upper legs are particularly nice as they add a measure of insulation for your hands on cold days and they will protect furniture and other items from damage upon light contact.
The two-bubble head is somewhat sensitive and it takes a little time to get things perfectly level, but considering the price, it is still a great feature. I am certain the unit could hold a much heavier camera / lens combo than it is rated for.
The quick release mount is a great feature and small enough to be unnoticable on the bottom of most DSLR cameras.
The included case will protect it from light rain and dust. It is not designed to protect the unit from heavy abuse. It has a shoulder strap for portability. Very nice that it is included.
While a bit heavy for toting around all day, it is otherwise the perfect tripod for the photo-enthusiast, or a professional desiring a stable low-cost platform that is easily portable.
Amazing quality given the price. You can't go wrong with this tripod.

I was looking for a tripod that would provide:
1) Durability - it passed. it is made well and I am confident it will last me for many years to come. 2) Funtionality - it Passed! it is easy to use. I like the quick release and the ability to level the camera. 3) Affordability - it passed! I was hoping to find something a little cheaper, but as often is the case, cheaper is not always better.

I use this primarily for HDR shots and long exposures. It is super stable, much taller than I am (even without the middle column extended!) and very smooth movement. my only gripe would be weight, its pretty heavy. I guess a small price to pay for such a solid tripod! It's a great value, coming with a great head and bag to boot!
