Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras, or for 35mm size "full-frame" digital cameras, e.g. D3 or Kodak Pro SLR/n.
This Sigma 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC HSM Lens now incorporates the HSM feature, which gives this lens the capability to auto focus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). In addition, with the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) incorporated into this lens, focusing will be quieter and more responsive.
The 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6 DC lens was exclusively designed to suit the characteristics of digital SLR cameras. Ideal as a full-range telephoto zoom lens, this compact telephoto zoom lens provides an equivalent range of approx. 88-320mm when used with a Nikon digital SLR camera (*).
DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result, these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.
(*) Note: Not suitable for 35mm film SLR cameras, or for 35mm size "full-frame" digital cameras, e.g. D3 or Kodak Pro SLR/n.

Comments about Sigma Zoom Normal-Telephoto 55-200mm f/4-5.6 DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital AF:
I bought this for my Nikon D40 and have been using it for a few weeks now. This lens is really great. I would recommend it over it's Nikkor counter part and also instead of the cheaper Sigma DC version [...]. The hyper sonic motor (HSM) for the autofocus is fast and accurate, although a little louder than my nikkor lens. The color is warmer also and more clear and crisp than nikkor. After buying this lens I have decided to switch to sigma. The only problem I have with it is that there is no image stabilizer and at 200mm the image is sometimes shaky if the wind is real heavy. I use a Tiffen 55mm Haze filter and a 55MM lens hood while bird watching and the photos almost always come out just how I want them to. I would recommend this lens over the nikkor and the non-HSM Sigma version. The extra $30 is well spent to have a faster focus. However, you should always look up whether it is compatible with your Nikon DSLR before buying it. When I looked it up there was a very large list (almost every model that I know of) of compatibility with this lens. The lens mount is metal which I also like better than nikon's plastic mount.[...]
