Canon MC-16 Maintenance Cartridge
The Canon MC-16 Maintenance Cartridge is a necessary component of the imagePROGRAF iPF605, iPF610, iPF6000S, iPF6100, & iPF6200 printers. It serves as the receptacle for waste ink during cleaning and normal startup subroutines, and is required for operation. Periodic exchange of the MC-16 assures the highest quality printing results with your imagePROGRAF printer. Your printer's software will indicate the status of your MC-16, and for best results it should be exchanged at ~80% capacity.

This item is a massive tray filled with absorbent material. When detected as full, printing stops. Period.
Canon's instructions refer to removing the "output tray". However if you have the cloth catcher, you don't have this tray. Simple guide would be: Remove guide. Pull out, insert new, reinstall guide. That's it.
It is a shame the tray was not designed to provide for only replacing the absorbent material as this is a lot of plastic to end up in a landfill. It could have been made as a two piece design. Open, dump material, wipe out, replace.
It is pricey, as all Canon products are, but a necessity.

This is for routine maintenance. The IPF6100 had been complaining that the maintenance cartridge needed replacing.
The step by step installation instructions are pretty good. I had the new one installed in about ten minutes. No mess and very simple to do yourself.
Canon provide a plastic bag for the old cartridge for disposal.
The printer stop complaining and all is well.

This replacement maintenance cartridge is a 'behind the scenes' component of Canon's large format inkjet printers. Printers will keep on running without these cartridges being replaced, but failure to do so will compromise the performance of these great printers. Like servicing a new car at suggested intervals and with genuine parts, you should always replace your maintenance cartridge with a genuine Canon product, to ensure the great product continues to function at its optimum.
