I am a professional photographer - I shoot all styles and types of photography. I love this lens. I was worried buying something for my D200 that wasn't from the nikon brand, but I am so glad I did. This lens is sharp and fast and the color is beautiful as well!! I really am so surprised and impressed. My only complaint is that it is a heavier lens.

I bought this lens a few years ago (before I really knew what I was doing), however it has served me well since. I work as a photo journalist and I use this lens as a walk-around. its got a great zoom range (for DX cameras) and a 1.3 stop aperture range isnt too terrible. However if you plan on shooting indoors at anything other than 17mm (because the aperture starts changing at 18-19mm) get a different lens, at 70mm f/4.5 its difficult to get a decent shot hand held indoors without cranking your ISO to the roof.
on the plus side, it is acceptably sharp throughout (for prints up to 8x10 from experience), little to no vignetting unless the hood isnt completely screwed on right, and the zoom creep is manageable. I've put this lens through the paces indoors and out and the build quality has surprised me (the only problem's i've seen is a loosening in the zoom creep and the hood doesn't stay on as well).
all in all, its a nice lens for the price, however if you plan on using it indoors quite often, I'd recommend a non-variable aperture zoom.
i'd recommend to a friend as a hobbyist, but not a professional.

This is my only zoom lens and I have used it extensively as a travel companion on my D300 for more than two years. As the price suggests - this lens does not promise stellar performance. It works phenomenally well in bright light (in the midday sun) and produces beautiful vivid colors, but you can forget about quality high res sunset/sunrise/night photos even if you use a tripod, because it simply does not do well in low light.
It produces some really sharp images both at 17mm and 70mm with the caveat that you have to be no more than three feet away from your subject. If you just shoot landscapes and you do it wide open -the pictures that come out as a result are soft, and quite smudged at the edges.
Autofocus works well and is not noticeably slower than a prime's.
This lens is fairly light (1lb) and has a good zoom range, which makes it perfect as a 'travel lens'.
The bokeh is average and truly not comparable to that of a prime or a high end zoom lens.
The Macro feature is nice, but if you really want quality and sharp macro images, get a real macro lens.

This lens is so versatile, I believe it could work for any photographer! As a student, I take any opportunity to photograph- therefore requiring my equipment to be as eclectic as my subjects. From concerts to events to stock to portraits to photojournalism- I can rely on this lens to help me get exactly what I want! With the wide angle and 2.8 setting, I can finally photograph the whole stage at a low lit concert and see wonderful results. It took me some time to get used to the reversed rotation to zoom, in comparison to Nikkor lenses but after a week or so, I was set. It's a little heavy- but no heavier than your average zoom lens. Overall, I believe this lens is a wonderful suit for just about any photographer!

I have been using this lens as a replacement for a kit lens on my D90. So far it takes relatively sharp shots, produces good colors, and has a fast focus to it. The only thing I dont "love" is when compared to my 50mm 1.8, its not quite as sharp in low light, but thats expected.

I have been playing with this for a couple of weeks now and I like this lens. My Nikon 18-70 broke and I replaced with the Sigma because I wanted the f2.8 on the low end. It feels pretty good and the zoom is pretty smooth. My only minor complaint is occasionally the auto focus seems to need to hunt more than it does with my other Nikon glass. I would recommend to a friend, but I could see where some pros would not care for it.

I work at a end high golf community in AZ and I'm asked to shoot photos of major events tourneys, special events and such and needed a faster lens for the "BIG" crowd shots This lens has answered all my needs. Fast enuf for night shots and wide enuf for those crowd shots with enuf reach for close ups At a good price too

I currently use a D70 with 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5 lens as well as a D80 and the Sigma 17-70mm. I was originally skeptical that this lens would be better, but I was -pleasantly- surprised. The lens provides a wide range, from 17mm to 70mm, but the fact that it has a great macro ability as well really adds to it.
While it doesn't provide 1:1 like a true macro lens, it does allow you to get VERY close.
The lens is also built very well. It's not very heavy and feels great while you are out taking photos.
I would highly recommend this lens to anyone looking for a good walk around macro lens.

I have been using this lens quite a bit. I'd say the only downfall is that it is not a fixed 2.8. Otherwise, has worked well.

I've used this lense for 10 months now in alls sorts of situations and it has done a great job! I've shot dance events for Spanish folkorico and flamenco companies and it tracked the dancers with no problems. I've shot a wedding with no problems. I was even asked to shoot formal portraits for my employer and it did a great job. Soon after that request I was commissioned to shoot a poster for a custom bike builder and the pic came out great. Right now I am using it for still life photos and they are tack sharp. I bought this lense on the advice of a former professional photographer it was great avice. Glad to say it was money well spent. I use it on a Nikon D80.

I pruchased this lens to have on a road trip out West. I did not have a wide lens and I knew I would want one for the vast landscapes! I was delighted! I have been back now for over a month and when I edited the pictures, croping and enlarging several I was delighted! I started to rate this lens a 4 because it was not a nikon but that would not be fair! I was also well pleased with the closeup flowers and things! I was down inside a canyon for two days hot dusty! no problems, and as I have arthritis very bad I quite often leave lens attached to camera and in the car. Lens used with D90 Nikon, I did have one problem went to shoot one day and camera went haywire. viewfinder went red and everytime i moved any control I could hear shutter trying to click. Took lens off and reattached and had no further trouble.

I shoot primarily black and white, weddings, portraits, some landscapes, and light documentary. Nikon 35m 1.8D died after about 10 years of solid use. Just picked this up to replace it. Was concerned for all the reasons others might have listed, not nikkor or nikon. However, took it out this last week, shot over 1000 pics of parades, people, night shots, landscapes, no problem. The lens focused quickly, images are sharp with the D200, still need more time with it to fully evaluate color saturation and edge sharpness, etc. However, for the money, I can't see any reason why this lens won't be on my camera for most of my knock around days, and light professional moments. Lens isn't light, but not heavy either. Forget the Sigma sunshade, a waste of time. Easy to use, easy to understand. I'll write back in about 6 months after a full winters use.

I replaced my D-60 kit lens with this. And I use it for almost everything, its a great all around lens. The macro images came out crisp with great detail, as well as the wide shots.I am not so concerned about the weight of the lens as most people would first point out. I would point out the some what sticky zoom ring, it's not as smooth at nikon zoom rings - and it's opposite of nikon's zoom direction. VR HSM works well. It's a great [$] investment.
