The Bower SFDRL14C TTL Macro Ringlight Flash provides full TTL control (including E-TTL II) with both digital or film SLR cameras. This allows for accurate exposures of closeup subjects. When shooting at extremely short distances, relatively minor movement of lighting and subject results in relatively large changes of exposure. TTL metering eliminates the need for lengthy calculations of exposure, because the inherent loss of light at macro distances can automatically be accounted with ease.

I own a Canon 40D and a Canon MP-E 65mm macro lens. I didn't want to pay 500$ for a ring flash, and I hesitated heavily before buying this Bower Ring Flash...

What a pleasant surprise! Everything works fine. I have never tried another ring flash so I cannot necessarily compare, but I've gotten some incredible insect shots with this flash. Obviously, the lighting is quite flat, but it enables me to shoot flies, bees and ants at fast shutter speeds HANDHELD. Superb.

And contrary to an earlier review, it works FINE with the 40D. No problems whatsoever. If you don't feel like dishing out 500$, I would highly recommend this flash.

The light does a decent job. The feelng is a bit cheap, but for the price, I didn't expect the top build quality. The main issue is the controls. On / Off sum up the extent of the controls. You have no control over the power of the unit, no control over first/second curtain. It does pretty good with TTL if you're using it for macro purposes, but even the, I have to dial in a bit of underexposure wit FEC to make it come out right. I thought I might use it for a combination of macro and portrait work, but for portrait work, it doesn't work very well.

Has a very cheap feel. Is built to a price point.
Misfires regularly, or doesn't fire at all.
Poor contacts result in batteries not sitting firmly in their housing.
On the odd occasion when it works, it works well.
In hindsight would have saved my money for the genuine product which costs five times as much.

Comments about Bower SFDRL14C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

Does what it's supposed to. Provides lighting at close magnifications by reaching in areas that a regular flash can't.
Great for macro- a much less expensive alternative to the MT-14EX.

There isn't much control available over flash power and the unit is a bit cheaply built, but for this price you can't complain, hence my 5/5 rating otherwise!

This is a no-nonsense reliable flash for my particular application. I am an orthodontist and I use it for close-up intra-oral photography. I shoot all my pictures at f22 at 1/50 using a Canon D500 with a 60 mm macro lens. The results are superb and totally predictable.

The first thing I noticed about this flash is its uncomfortably fragile-feeling shoe. However, it provides the right amount of light for someone not wanting to fork out a lot for occasional use! I'd recommend this if you're looking for an inexpensive option.

The ETTL did not work well. The picture is always over flashed.

Also the ring flash burned out the batteries very fast. I used AA Energizer batteries. And the batteries are out of power in 1 hr... (20-30 shots ). This is terrible

The only thing I don't like is when I go lower than 50mm with an 18-50 lens, my shots are like shooting through a tube. Only a small portion of my shooting is macro so I can work with the limitation.

I've been wanting to get into macro photography for a while and only recently had the opportunity to afford gearing up for it. I bought this flash not only because of the price, but also because of the E-TTL II features and the fact that I could take the ring light off the camera and use it like an off camera flash when taking photos of flowers. I did read through a lot of the reviews for this flash and have made it a point to only have the flash on tight enough that it won't fall off, yet loose enough that I can take it off fairly easily. Even though I am relatively a beginner when it comes to off camera flash photography, I can say that I'm going to have a lot of fun this summer using this with all of my lenses in the bag when doing flower/macro photography.

I received the product in the store could not use it.

Arrived faulty and I have to change it, however, already considering paying for a better model and more expensive.

Comments about Bower SFDRL14C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

The ring light works very well with my Canon EOS 5d and EOS 5d MarkII. The eTTL works as it should. It performs as well as the very expensive Canon Ring Light. Yes it does not have all of the bells and whistles but it has all of the needed functions. It is very compact and easy to install on a lens. Battery life is outstanding. Highly reccommended.

Comments about Bower SFDRL14C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

I'm an Orthodontist and needed a ring light for intra-orals. Already had a canon and decided to match a ring light. Did not want to spend $400 to $500 so I called B&H and took a chance on the Bower. Glad I did so far. Has worked perfect right out of the box. Does it have plastic connector parts, yes. For my use I appreciate the light weight.

Comments about Bower SFDRL14C Macro Ringlight Flash for Canon E-TTL II:

Bought this for use on my 100mm macro lens. I usually use a UV filter for lens protection, but when using this flash it appears the outcome is better without a filter.
The only downside is what to do with this bulky item when it is not mounted on the lens.
Certainly easy to use and lightweight; however I have not owned it long enough to rate durability and reliability. That said, it appears to be a great item. One I'll use time and again. Price was right too.
