Look at Juicedlink. What they offer blows Sony's overpriced XLR-Mic Adapter for the PCM D1 or PCM D50 out of the water!

Comments about Sony XLR-1 XLR Mic Adapter for PCM-D1 and PCM-D50:

I purchased this unit while evaluating the D50, which this is designed to mount to. While it does give either the D50 or D1 the capability to mount XLR-style mics it creates on major problem: It destroys the portability factor of the D50.

Sony obviously designed it to transform the handheld units into table-top devices because they added rubberized feet to the enclosed mounting plate however they did not provide a method for attaching a shoulder strap or handles, so it makes handholding the entire rig completely unwieldy and near-impossible.

When you consider the cost of the D50 and the XLR-1 together you might as well purchase the Tascam HD-P2 or similar device that was designed from the outset to be an XLR-type field recorder. And in fact, the Tascam ends up being almost exactly the same cost as the D50 and XLR-1 together and you get a much more for the money.

If you have either the D50 or D1 and want the ability to use XLR mics this is a must-have option, however you will lose the portability of the handheld unit.

Comments about Sony XLR-1 XLR Mic Adapter for PCM-D1 and PCM-D50:

I needed to hook up XLR mics to my Sony PCM-D1, but if I had to do it again, I would get a Sound Devices MixPre which would have cost a little more, but would have been a more flexible and useful solution.

Comments about Sony XLR-1 XLR Mic Adapter for PCM-D1 and PCM-D50:

For a mic adapter (do not confuse the XLR-1 with a preamplifier!) this small passive box is quite expensive indeed. On the other hand, no other product offers 30 hours of continuous operation on standard AA batteries! Furthermore, the item perfectly integrates with my PCM-D50 (screws securely on its back). Although the XLR-1 doesn't offer a sound on its own, its combination with the D50 sounds truly superb. Combined with Neumann microphones (KM184s), the PCM-D50 and XLR-1 combo favourably compares with my Fostex FR-2... but offers a smaller footprint and amazing (battery-powered) operating time!
