I bought this despite reading the other review complaining that it cannot handle 24p footage. Not true.
I have tapes with 60i, 24p, and 24pA footage, and it handles it all, fine. Yes, even with Advanced Pulldown Removal to Final Cut Pro.
So, I think the other reviewer was talking about one of the incarnations of 24 frame video (like the proprietary CANON) variety found on the HV20 and HV30. BTW, I don't think ANY DV deck can handle those formats, yet. Which is why you need to use the camera you shot with to digitize those types of footage.
But if you, like me, have DV footage in 24p or 24pA (say, from a DVX-100 or an HVX-200), this deck WILL work. Including transferring the flagged frames over firewire into Final Cut Pro 6, when dealing with 24pA footage.
Also, it's nice that the 16x9 screen can recognize anamorphic DV footage and display it properly, instantly.
Another nice touch, you can use the deck to "loop through" video signals into an non-linear editor, via firewire. In other words, you can send composite into the deck and have it go right into Final Cut Pro via firewire, WITHOUT the use of a tape. And vice versa! So... if you own this deck, you won't need that Canopus box whose sole function is that. So, you'll save $200 - 300, there.

I was very disappointed to find that the GV-HD700 will not play HD tapes shot at 30F or 24F on my Canon XHAI or HV20a camcorders (apparently on all Canon camcorders). It will play only 60i tapes.
Sony, having built a machine that will not function with Canon camcorder tapes (unless they are recorded at 60i), did not have had the good spirit to issue an appropriate warning in their advertisements and in the owners manual. Very bad consumer policy, I am sure!

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:
I use this product to check all my HDV footage and it´s wonderful, it´s pretty small, you can store it in everywhere, the only thing I don't like about the product is that the LCD is not as good quality as a HVR-Z5U LCD, but for me, fits perfect because I don't need to connect an external monitor and all the HDV footage is check in the PC. I had a problem with it, the heads were damaged and I returned it to B&H and they send me another one :)

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:
I ordered this product because I run a small non-profit organization that has more than 200 hours of video on miniDV. Within the first three days of receiving this product I was able to download more than 25 hours of video. This product is easy to use and compatible with both Mac and PC. It was ready to go right out of the box. Sony makes quality products and this is no exception.
I would definitely recommend this to others looking for a quick solution to downloading video from miniDV, both SD and HD, to your editing software.

Good for onboard editing and editing with another unit - best if you have iLink (optional cable).
Can only be used to transfer still images to video - IF you can get the USB connection to work.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:
I have purchased 3 of these units for my business and they all had an issue within less than a year. These units work perfect besides the firewire ports being very weak. With moderate use (about 2-7 hours capture per week) 2 units failed in less than a year, and the 3rd just quit working this week. Sony will cover parts but the labor is absurd. I already sent 2 our for repairs paying over $400, now I'm wondering if it's worth it for the 3rd. On a side note the image quality isn't great but what do you expect out of a 1080i capture deck?

So far I have just used this to view my old mini DV tapes, as my camcorder died. It does a fantastic job! Picture quality is great, and it's super easy to use. I will be using it to burn my tapes over to DVDs.

This little thing has changed my life. I've always known I needed this tool but never had the time or cash to get it. Found myself in a situation where I needed it. I'm so happy with how it works. It has made my workflow so much better!

Bought this as I needed a deck with Firewire and HDMI capability and a monitor. This one has all and does everything I need it to do. I use it to playback videos into my NLE and to use as a field monitor also. The only reason I wouldn't give it Five Stars is that it only accepts MiniDV sized cassettes and not full sized DVCAM cassettes.

Great product from Sony, especially if you have shot a lot of DV footage in the past and have moved to HDV. Works well with FCP.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:
I've used a Sony HDR-HC9 mini-HDV camcorder this past year. Was worried I'd wear out tape heads and cassette transferring files, loading and unloading, winding and rewinding. I also thought I was saving time by transferring all contents on the tape via the camcorder, unedited, then used the computer to do all editing.
Boy was I wrong! This little gem changed all that! Now I only transfer to the computer what looks good and can be used.
It does everything I used to do with the camcorder plus:
Fast forwarding on screen.
Slow motion on screen - crystal clear image.
Frame stepping on screen.
Date, CTI (current time indicator) and counters on screen, or selectively turned off.
FF to next shot, or backward, or to a marker I can add and time from.
Full LCD screen adjustment, audio, headphone jack.
Still photo transfer (Sony's Memory Stick Duo) from camcorder or from the stick via a tape deck transfer slot.
Today I shot footage outside at a shoreline for 3 hours and used the tape deck as a monitor (battery powered, and using the camcorder iLink cable (AKA: IEEE 1394 cable, "firewire" 4 pin to 4 pin). Wow! What a difference. Will never miss a shot that's slightly out of focus again. The resolution of the monitor and color are great. Morning sun did NOT bother the screen.
There's a 1 sec latency in viewing on the tape deck monitor, what the camcorder is recording. I shoot a lot of tripod, fixed frame, slow pan subjects and settings so it was easy to adjust to this slight delay.
This unit is a great investment. Saves wear on your camcorder. Saves time by seeing clearly what you need to transfer to computer and makes a great remote monitor while shooting.
It's like having a post production crew help with review, edit, cut, transfer and even on location!
Despite other reviews: You CAN RECORD IN 1080i HDV from camcorder to deck AND from deck to camcorder; from TV to deck, from DVD player to deck. Use the right cables and settings and READ THE MANUAL. Cannon? This is made by Sony.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:
My version is basically the same as the US one, but UK PAL. A great deck for simple edit and very useful for playback of HD or SD tapes, to save use of the camcorder. My pro Sony camcorder records in 1080i or 1080p (25, not 24), and though it is a 1080i unit, the GV700 plays both with no problem.
One con: after three years of moderate use, the tape transport mechanism has failed, needing very expensive replacement. I also think the unit is heavily overpriced.

Comments about Sony GV-HD700 HDV Video Walkman VCR:
I have used the Sony Digital 8 look-alike for over 10 years and this is the same type machine except for Mini-DV HD video tape. The D-8 machine has worked great and this is no exception. My iMac recognizes it and works flawlessly. I transfer everything with firewire. It came with a battery but I use the AC/DC unit provided. It also comes with the cables described in the product description. The unit puts out 1080 HD video but does not record it. The unit works just as described in the product description. The 16:9 screen is bright, the sound could be louder but I pay attention to the iMac speakers or headsets. Playing back the mini DV tapes on my Philips flat screen and Sony home theater system proves its ability to playback great sharp color pictures and great sound recorded by my Sony HDR-FX7 and its Azden stereo shotgun mike with Azden sound mitten. I look forward to a lot of years of service out of the GV-HD700 just as I have out of its D-8 counterpart. Given Sony's service record [...], a person can't go wrong with either one. If a person wants to use this as a truly portable machine, I would recommend Sony's largest battery for it.

I bought this walkman to capture both SD and HD mini-dv tapes. I no longer have a mini-dv camcorder so I needed something. This walkman has exceeding my expectations. Its highly portable and the screen is big enough. If you travel you will want to pick up a longer life battery. The battery that comes with it only last about an hour.
