The dedicated Nikon HB-36 Lens Hood is specifically designed for use with the 70-300mm VR lens.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.
The "petal" shape of this lens hood maximizes the amount of hood coverage for the minimum amount of weight and hood area. This dedicated lens hood is designed to match the specific focal length of the lens it was designed for.

Comments about Nikon HB-36 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I got a used 70-300mm and it didn't come with a lens hood so I purchased this one. It works great. This was cheaper than buying the used lens with the lens hood.

Comments about Nikon HB-36 Bayonet Lens Hood:
Lose or break your lens hood? Don't expose your glass to the light of day without one. Yes, even the best of lens out there will fall victim to flare. I'm sure you could find a generic replacement at less cost, but, for a couple bucks more, here's the genuine article, designed for your specific lens. (believe it: there is good reason for the location, depth, and width of the scalloped cutouts.) So, unless you're looking to upgrade your lens hood to an adjustable bellows lens hood, here is exactly what you need, at a very reasonable price [...]

Comments about Nikon HB-36 Bayonet Lens Hood:
Although a hood seems trivial, I have compared my outdoor youth football photos with and without a hood.
Since over the course of a game (or any outdoor shooting) you will be at multiple positions relative to the sun, this hood is a must for sunny days. It also does a good job of hiding dust or dirt that may be on your lens. The dust spots will still be on your image but it won't be as obvious as it would have been without a hood.
This hood fits on my 70-300mm lens. The depth does a great job of blocking shallow (but still bright) sun angles. I strongly recommend buying this hood over any of the generic (shallow) ones typically found at your local photo store.
Lastly, if you're selling your photos, the hood makes your lens look really long and expensive. Sometimes, that goes a long way towards giving a professional image and justifying a professional price.

Comments about Nikon HB-36 Bayonet Lens Hood:
I was asked to review this product that I recently purchased. Let's see. The taste is fairly ordinary--kind of a rather chewy hard plastic shell. It's not much of a conversation piece either. Basically, it's a hood and it does what you expect it to do. I have no complaints and would definitely recommend it.

Comments about Nikon HB-36 Bayonet Lens Hood:
Shooting sports action on a sunny day without a lens hood can be disastrous. A great shot gets ruined by the glare or those tiny specks of dust on your lens become huge blotches on the photograph. This light and easy to use lens hood keeps the glare out and saves those shots.
You can just flip it over and mount it backwards to get it out of the way.

Comments about Nikon HB-36 Bayonet Lens Hood:
This hood is sturdy and works well on my Nikon 70-300mm VR lens. One mishap with this lens the hood saved my filter and lens objective from damage. I had to replace the hood but everything else was untouched. A rubber hood never would have protected the objective at all.
The only disadvantage is it is pain to use and store because it must be reversed every time.
