If you're searching for a cost effective 2-in-1 intuitive, universal remote control, look no further than the RM-EZ4 Remote Commander from Sony. The unit offers superb functionality and versatility, with the ability to control a large variety of devices and brands with the built-in extensive infrared database.
The remote does not work with DVD players. With its two supplied buttons, it will only control the TV and cable/satellite device. In addition, this controller features a large button design, making it easy to locate printed numbers and symbols on the remote panel.

Got one for my mother because now that she is forced to get a digital cable box for her television she's confounded by the Cablevision remote which she complains has "too many buttons." This "no-frills" remote is simply laid out and perfect for the older generation. It works with the new digital cable box except that, unfortunately, the volume control does not work; so you have to adjust the volume directly on the TV.

I bought this to replace an old failing remote. Nice little unit, clean design, but I cannot get it programmed. I spent hours messing with it.
According to Sony, It will work on units manufactured after 1989. My Bell & Howell is from 1994. The codes Sony lists/require for the TV's are all 4 digit numbers beginning with 8. BUT, every code I could find online for my TV are 3 digit. The best I can say is it's not compatible with older TV's, because every other remote I ever used took 3 digit codes.
There's always the disclaimer "won't work on some units". Here's my disclaimer: I give up on it, the TV is going in the dumpster.

Comments about Sony RM-EZ4 Remote Commander:
Our eyes are failing and the old remote was very frustating to see the buttons. This installed in no time and it is wonderful to be able to see the remote buttons. It's not easy getting old but this took the frustration out of changing channels on our T.V.

Mostly replaces controller supplied by Direct TV.
Once set up it works quickly with no fuss if all you want is a channel changer and volume control.
Great Price.

I thought the buttons would much bigger than they are. Good for two accessories. Not as good for a person with eye problems.
