Comments about Archos 705 Portable WiFi Media Player and Recorder with 160GB:
After owning this unit for only a month or so I have good and bad things to say about it. And having built a few computers of my own I consider myself an advanced intermediate consumer when it comes to computers and electronics.
I don't have an Ipod to compare with this Archos machine so it's hard for me to say which unit is preferable. If you're like me, someone who likes large viewing screens to be able to see my photos and videos portably, it was a no-brainer to select this large screen model. There is no replacement on the market for this feature because, I assume, Archos is the only unit out there this size. To me, That eliminates all others. I don't know how anyone can even watch a movie or scrutinize your photos on anything the size of an Ipod. That's pretty much the size of the screens on the back of many cameras. One main reason for buying this was for picture storage. After checking the prices of the Epson units or similar ones, I felt I could buy this, in which case I'd not only get a larger screen but I'd also have the entertainment part of it. This is where I believe it blows all of those other picture storage devices away.
As far as software goes, this unit is based on the 'Opera' styled Operating System. I have no experience with this stuff but realize someone had to come up with something somewhat simplified so as not to use too much memory or storage. The other thing I like about this unit is the 160 GB that it has. Very useful and it seems I haven't begun to phase the amount of storage this thing has. I still have over 145 GB after putting all of my media from my Windows Media player on it, which contains about 500 songs, 100 videos and 50 or 60 documents. So far that is not much but it's nice to know that storage is no where near a problem yet.
I don't like the speed of a lot of the operations but that is something I guess I have to get used to after coming off of a single 3Ghz processor with 4 GB of ram. The operations that are processed are by no means long and dragged out, no, maybe 5 to 10 seconds each- just not instantaneous like I'm used to. The touch screen also needs some getting used to, you'll have to get used to pecking at this thing using a stylus, (which is nothing more than a stiff piece of plastic). Sometimes I feel like a chicken trying to get her reward standing in front of a snack window because you'll have to peck the glass sometimes a few times to get what you want. I don't know if the Ipod is like this but it seems like it could use some improvement here. Although in all fairness to Archos, other times the screen seems so sensitive that all it takes is a very light 'touch' to communicate with it. Truly amazing, really! It's probably because I'm not right on the money of my target. The screen can be calibrated, which I've done, but maybe not carefully enough.
In any case, it still has many avenues to explore and as far as entertaining, it will kill a couplke of hours in a snap, if you start to fool around with it, so as far as a machine for entertainment,- well, I guess that's what it's intended for and for this, it truly is an amzing piece of technology.

It takes a learning curve to use this device, but once known, the features are so smart. Battery lasts about 5 hours for video and up to 14 hours for audio only. You can record TV as a DVR, play multiple divx once the plugins installed, use it as an external hard drive, if you have the dock, you can play back on TV your recordings, photos anything that's on it. Works great with windows and mac. Play games, browse the net, install widgets, more and more, I use it everyday, perfect solution for IT.
