As a newly working photojournalist, I need a backpack to carry my notebook plus by basic gear which comprises a Canon 1Dmk2, 30D, 17-40, 70-200, a flash and spare batteries. Fully loaded, this bag can handle it all, with both bodies and lenses in the lower compartment. The upper compartment holds the rest. In the notebook slot fits my 15" Lenovo notebook and power adapter. When on a job where both cameras are out and the only thing being carried is the notebook and remaining bits, this is one comfortable backpack - very light. The side water bottle holder is a bonus too and does away with my Lowepro bottle holder on my belt.

Having spent previously owned and rejected both the Crumpler Million Dollar Home (way too heavy and difficult to get at the gear) and the Lowepro CompuDayPack (very, very uncomfortable on my back), I'm more than happy with this choice.

I did significant research before buying this backpack. I wanted a good compromise between accessibility, ability to hold upwards of 3-4 lenses, to hold my laptop and personal items; and then the obvious, like comfort, durability, etc. First impressions upon receiving this backpack were that it's designed and built well, and had a good feel overall. However, after taking it on a three-hour trek to test it out at full capacity, I've discovered a few issues with it.

First, the good. As mentioned, the build and design appears to be of very nice quality. Nice, seemingly durably materials. Plenty of cushioning--particularly for the camera and laptop areas. I'd be confident my gear would not be hurt in this bag. Also, the colored interior pockets is a nice feature, it makes it much easier to see and organize your items. The zippers seem smooth and well designed, all the seams appear to be well stitched. Also, another positive with this backpack is it distributes weight well, and there's very little sway or movement (with or without the chest/waist straps). It feels solid against your back.

Now to the bad. The backpack is uncomfortable after just an hour or so of use at full capacity. Packed in it, I had my Pentax K100D with lens attached, two additional lenses, a few small accessories, my 13" Macbook laptop, two sets of AA batteries, a first aid kit, a small lunch, and a small bottle of water. This was about all I could fit in the bag, and it made it of significant (not unbearable) weight. However, it didn't take long for me to feel the wear of the straps on my shoulders, pressing into them. The shoulder straps seem like they should maybe be wider, to distribute the weight more. To me, they're relatively narrow for what this backpack should be expected to carry. Also, while the waist strap does definitely help, it isn't much. A nicer strap would be nicer, for a more snug fit.

Another significant complaint with this backpack is the completely inadequate mesh pocket on the side. It's helpful for carrying a monopod, or maybe a very small/skinny water bottle. But any remotely normal size water bottle has no chance of fitting. To me, this is a major oversight. An accessible water bottle is one of the things I'd like most when out hiking with heavy gear. There's a couple other minor design issues I discovered. The top "big" pocket for personal items isn't so big. Don't expect to fit more than a small lunch and maybe a very light jacket or t-shirt. Small accessories are no problem, though. Also, don't expect to fit any longer telephoto lenses in the camera compartment. My 70-300mm barely fit.

Overall, honestly, if you're not too hung up on having a lot of space for personal items, and you don't have bony shoulders (like I do), this backpack might be a great deal for you. The build quality is very nice, and you can't beat a lifetime guarantee (optional through the Kata website). However, if you're looking for the best photography backpack out there with no compromises, or you're particularly worried about comfort over long periods, or about plenty of space for personal items, I'd look elsewhere. I'm planning to return this backpack for a refund and researching for a different one. Overall, I was disappointed.

Comments about Kata DR-467 Digital Rucksack (Black):

This is a pretty good bag. It's got a lot of pockets and is very roomy. However, the padding on the shoulder straps seems to lose its form very quickly--after about 4 months of daily use, there's no padding anymore. Also, the waist and chest buckles feel very cheap. Good bag, but not worth the price :(

Comments about Kata DR-467 Digital Rucksack (Black):

I am an amateur photographer and software developer. I carry my laptop and DSLR pretty much everywhere I go, so I was looking for a lightweight solution to carry both. I have a 15" Apple MacBook Pro and Cannon DSLR with 2 lenses (the kit lens 18-55mm, and a 50mm). Everything fits as expected and with room to spare. I can grow into this bag if I end up buying more equipment.

The front of the bag is the camera compartment at the bottom with room for the DSLR and 2-3 lenses, and above that is a half-moon like pocket for misc gear. Because the camera takes up the lower half of the bag, this compartment isn't the full-sized one you might expect in a traditional back pack, but it's pretty good sized. I've put a iPad in there before, a shirt, and a raincoat no problem. The back of the bag by the straps is of course where the laptop slips in. It feels pretty padded and secure in there. There's also various small pockets in the front of the bag that are good for organizing smaller things like memory cards and batteries and such.

I bought this based on the price and overall good reviews. I was skeptical about this being a high quality bag based on the price, but it's definitely a quality, well thought out bag. Take for example, the shoulder straps: because they cover up the zipper for access to the laptop, they are designed to bend back over the front of the bag so you can pull out your laptop easily. There's some pull straps on either side of the bag that I've used for various things including a water bottle and a tripod, though not specifically designed for either.

If I have any complaint, it's that it can be a bit awkward to pull out the camera while you're walking around. It's not impossible, I've done it, but it appears not to have been designed for this really. Generally this isn't a huge problem for me, I put the bag down and pull out the camera when I'm talking photos.

I recommend this bag pretty strongly for the amateur photographer who wants a cheap, lightweight bag they can grow in without sacrificing quality.

It has a lot of space for everything I need, from power cables to external hard drives. It even has a hidden pocket where I keep money.
I wish there was a way to hide the waist straps when I'm not using them.

I recently purchased this bag for a trip down to Florida and I needed a bag that could hold both my laptop and camera gear to minimize my carry on foot print. This bag rocks! I had plenty of space for my camera body, 4 lenses and a tag along point & shoot. I also loaded it up with my extra electronics gear sucha as GPS, iPod, cell, chargers, etc. The bag is very comfortable even with it packed to the gills and the compartments are easy enough to get to. I would definitely purchase the bag again, I really dug the space it provided!

Its a must buy for all photographers and enthusiasts. Even Beginners & people who have a Laptop can think of buying this one. It has enormous space to store all electronic gear in one place. The front compartment is amazing. Can easily store upto 3 lenses a flash & a camera. The flexible padding design works wonderful. I initially thought a yellow interior was a little wierd, but its a thought through design it contrasts very well with all photo equipment which are primarily black. I'm enjoying it..

I wanted something to use for travel when I needed to bring a laptop and my camera with instead of taking two bags on the plane. This one worked out well but I ended up returning it for another Kata model because:
Its rather difficult to get the camera in and out (Rebel XT with 15-85mm) With a smaller lens this wouldn't be an issue.
Tripod holder doesn't work that well.

I love my new Kata bag. It's the perfect size for my DSLR with attached lens and hood in the top zipper part. In the bottom part, I have 3 lenses, a sppedlite flash, and lots a spare room. I love that I also have room for my laptop, a harddrive and all the cords I need. Everything I need for a shoot neatly fits in this backpack.

And I LOVE that it doesn't scream "Camera Bag". It looks like a stylie backpack. And doesn't kill my arm the way my old shoulder camera bag used to. WAY more ergonomic.

When I bought this backpack I needed a laptop holder, camera compartment and somewhere to put my art supplies. I also wanted a tripod holder for either my tripod or my easel. This bag came through. As the pictures show the camera compartment "slides" out. This makes it easy to access your camera for the quick shots. The top is perfect for holding all my paints and brushes. Another important thing is the "rain coat" for the backpack. This is important to me because I will be taking this bag with me to England and I do not want my camera ruined by a spring shower. The only slight negative is that the laptop compartment is the only full length part of the backpack, but this is more important to me as a student than I assume it would be for most others. All in all, this is exactly what I wanted and needed.

Comments about Kata DR-467 Digital Rucksack (Black):

I bought this bag to use over a 6 month trip to Paris. After much comparison to the Lowepro fastpack 200, this was the bag for me. The most important thing was that it didn't scream EXPENSIVE GEAR INSIDE. The removable camera compartment is customizable using the included velcro dividers and rotates out of the pack. Just remember that when you seal it up the gear is facing upwards and not out the way you inserted it.

My 15 mac book pro, sits comfortably in the back laptop pocket. There's probably enough room for a 17", but I keep documents and magazines in there.

The upper compartment is very roomy. Cell phone pocket, pen slots, etc. The nice thing is the wide open space that can hold a compressed jacket, power bricks, books or whatever.

There are 3 outer zip pockets, one kind of hidden in the middle and 2 smaller ones on either side. The middle pocket is as wide as the pack and has a mesh stopper to make sure nothing falls out when you open it. I don't find much use for the outer pockets, when the upper section is full, they are hard to get your fingers into.

Draw straps are nicer to compress the load, but I don't like squishing my stuff.

The overall construction feels tough and durable. It's comfy on the back and nothing moves around. Top strap is easy on the hand when carrying it from there. There's a strap across the back to go over your suitcase handle for easy transport.

I love the bright yellow insides against the low key black, looks good and is easy to locate lost bits. I wouldn't have made the rain cover the same bright yellow though, looks kind of ridiculous unless you need to be rescued at sea or from a mountain.

If I had to gripe about something, I would have liked a dedicated tripod hook/strap/band. You can put a leg through one of the drawstraps though.

Very pleased with this bag. Well made and though out. Holds my camera/video gear and essential travel items. Doesn't draw attention.
Less bulky than the Lowepro fastpack 200.

I love using this to travel. but as far as carrying 2 DSLRs i highly disagree. With this bag i can fit my 30D attatched with my 50mm f1.4 w/hood + my 100mm f2 and 2 580exII's and my 15" big dell laptop(not bad for travel). i loved this thing up until i bought my 5D+grip+24-70L. it fits only because i make it akwardly fit into the bag and it will fit my 50mmf1.4 prime as well and my laptop. great bag for smaller DSLRs but not for ones with grips. ill still use it for travel and for school(when i have my primes attatched). But thats about it, now searching for a bag slightly larger but still fits a laptop but not as bulky as some of the other backpacks in those classes.

Overall a solid bag. I've got my Nikon D60, 2 lenses, a small laptop, iPad, phone and all charges, plus room for a few documents too.

Only gripe is that a couple of the front, small zippered pockets are so tiny that they're not that useful.

A superb photo backpack that delivered 100% of the advertised capability. It easily accommodates a D-300S with battery pack and attached 24-120mm, a 80-400mm tele, accessories, rain jacket, snack, etc. Will fit a second DSLR body in the top section. Macbook fits securely in the laptop section. The convertibility, construction and comfortable fit of the bag are exceptional. Padding and protection throughout also top notch. Accessibility to both top and bottom sections is excellent, though the rear access is a consideration when traveling in crowded, high theft areas. Comfortable slung over one shoulder or both. The mesh water bottle/tripod holder is a bit too small and I would have preferred some elasticity in that feature. Hands down the best photo backpack I've ever owned or seen.

This is more or less ideal bag for a traveller who has to carry a laptop computer and a small photo system (a DSLR camera without a grip and a couple of additional lenses). The only minor improvement I might suggest is to make the waist harness wider for more uniform weight distribution.
