The Nikon Coolpix S51 Digital Camera combines 8.1 effective megapixels of imaging performance with a 3x Zoom-Nikkor ED lens to capture everything from wide-open landscapes to tight portraits with outstanding clarity and true-to-life color. It features a large, bright 3.0-inch LCD monitor with a wide 160-degree viewing angle, enabling easier composition and high-quality image playback. It also incorporates Nikon's optical lens shift VR (Vibration Reduction) system, which compensates for camera movements to produce sharper, steadier images, and a High-Sensitivity mode selects the optimal setting up to ISO 1600 when shooting fast-moving or poorly lit subjects.

8.1 Megapixel Resolution
With 8.1 million pixels of image information, the Nikon Coolpix S51/S51c can produce stunning, photo quality prints up to 16" x 20".
3x Optical Zoom-Nikkor ED Glass Lens
The Zoom Nikkor Lens incorporates exclusive ED lens elements and provides a 3x optical zoom (38mm-114mm equivalent) while the Macro capability lets you get as close as 1.6" to your subject inch. This combination is supported by Nikon's world-renowned optical technology delivering crisp, clear images.
VR (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
The lens of the Coolpix S51 incorporates Nikon's optical lens shift VR (Vibration Reduction) system, which compensates for camera movements to produce sharper, steadier images. And because the VR system remains active whenever the camera is on, images also appear more stable on the LCD monitor, making it much easier to judge the right moment to take the shot.
Slim, Stylish, All-Metal Design
With a slim, sophisticated Design this ultra-compact digital camera easily slips right into your shirt pocket or purse, and its good looks are complemented by incredible durability due to the all-metal casing.
Auto Adjust Sensitivity up to ISO 1600
High light sensitivity up to ISO 1600 opens up a whole new world of photo opportunities. Allowing you to tackle scenes and situations far beyond the capabilities of conventional compact cameras, it offers you new power to capture fast-moving objects with outstanding clarity and gives you great exposures in significantly lower light.
Nikon In-Camera Red-Eye Fix
The Red-Eye Fix system automatically corrects for most instances of the red-eye effect that is commonly caused by the use of a built-in flash on a compact camera.
Nikon D-Lighting
The Nikon D-Lighting feature can rescue underexposed images or shots taken with too much backlight by automatically brightening the dark areas in the picture, while maintaining the brighter areas of the image.
Nikon Face-Priority AF
The Face-Priority AF system automatically detects and achieves sharp focus on people's faces wherever they are in the frame for crisp, sharp portraits.
One-touch Portrait Button
The handy Portrait Button provides direct access to Face-priority AF, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, and Nikon's D-Lighting, to provide the simplest path to astounding portraits and posed group shots.
15 Scene Modes
The Coolpix S51 incorporates 15 scene modes that cover some of the more common difficult shooting situations to maximize the image quality. The scene modes automatically adjust focus, exposure, white balance and other settings to make getting a good exposure easy.
Movie and Voice Recording
Shoot QuickTime movies with sound at 30 frames per second at a length that is only limited by the available space on the internal memory or your SD memory card. The Voice Memo Function Records up to 5 hours of sound that can then be attached to an image, or played back by itself.
Auto Image Rotation
The Auto Image Rotation feature detects pictures that have been taken with the camera held vertically and automatically rotates the image for in-camera LCD playback.
Nikon In-Camera Innovations
The Nikon Coolpix S51 includes a number of in camera innovations in addition to what has been described above, including the following features. In-Camera Cropping allows you to crop out the part of the image you don't want and keep the part you like. Saturation Mode allows you to control the color saturation. Blur Warning alerts you to a blurry image. Noise Reduction Mode minimizes digital artifacts in long exposures. Voice Memo Function records up to 20 seconds of sound that can then be attached to an image. Best Shot Selector enables the camera to take a series of photos and automatically select the one with the sharpest focus. Date and Time Imprinting is available to document the exact time and date that your photo is taken.
Rotary Multi Selector
The Rotary Multi Selector enables easier camera use. Swift circular scrolling action allows speedy image browsing at up to 10 pictures per second, and a range of buttons ensures intuitive operation. An onscreen icon with a cursor that tracks Rotary Multi Selector scrolling makes it easy to select various features.
In-Camera Help Button
The In-Camera Help button on the Coolpix S51 instantly displays an explanation for all the functions within all menus.
Built-in and Expandable Memory
The camera includes 13MB of built-in memory so you can begin taking shots immediately without having to purchase a memory card, and the memory capacity can be expanded dramatically with Secure digital (SD) or Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) memory cards.
Huge, Bright 3.0-inch LCD
The Coolpix S51 is equipped with a huge 3.0" LCD great for viewing images anywhere, anytime. The impressive 170 degree wide viewing angle makes it easier for everyone to see and enjoy images. The larger 230,000-dot LCD lets you make the most of smooth, sharp movies, fantastic looking stills and exciting Pictmotion shows.

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S51 Digital Camera (Black):

I find that most devices, such as digital cameras have something the other doesn't. In other words, when I was looking for a new P&S digital camera, I kept liking one camera for a certain feature, then finding another better camera minus those same features.

What sold me on the Nikon Coolpix was the user interface. I HATE having to learn new menus and screens. When I picked up the Coolpix, it was as if I had already known how to use it.

One other great feature is the ability to edit and make quick videos IN the camera! No Joke! As an avid Flickr user, I'm now able to create video and upload it ready to Flickr's new video service. Genius!

I take the Coolpix everywhere I go now, the size allows me to slip it into my pocket. There is no lens that comes out of the device, so I never have to worry about banging it.

    Great Camera

    By Joan

Comments about Nikon Coolpix S51 Digital Camera (Black):

My husband purchased this camera for my trip to Europe. Knowing I had little expertise with cameras this little Nikon was just the thing. I wanted a camera to fit into my small purse and I wanted to be able to point and shoot at everything I saw and this camera delivered. After learning how to change the white balance in the shooting mode some of the inside pictures were better than leaving it on automatic. Also changing the scene menu was very easy to do, the night landscape gave me wonderful pictures of Prague at night. Changing the scene menu to sports I was able to take picture of the country side from the train. The only downfall of the great little camera is if you use the flash a lot it will drain the battery fast, make sure you have an extra charged battery with you. If not using the flash the battery lasted all day on a hop on hop off bus in London.

    Expertise: Novice

Problems Encountered: The only downfall of the great little camera is if you use the flash a lot it will drain the battery fast, make sure you have an extra charged battery with you.

Previous Equivalent Item Owned: Casio QV-11, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-V1

    Items I Recommend: Extra battery
