Comments about Manfrotto 172 Counter Balance Weight - 3 lbs:
There isn't much to say. Anyone who has used Manfrotto products knows they are beyond reproach. I have never owned one that didn't live up to 100% of what it claimed to do when I ordered it. Granted, there isn't much to a counterweight, but this is the Cadillac of counterweights. Good for securing light stands, etc. I would go heavier than 3 lbs if you're planning on using it for a boom, but this is a great weight at a great price.

Comments about Manfrotto 172 Counter Balance Weight - 3 lbs:
Ok, genius might be an over statement but at first glance one might think of the counter weight as a "simple" solution. Further examination and use, you'll find that this counter weight is a functional piece of art. Again, maybe an over statement. This weight adapter will snugly attach to almost any rod, making it a great universal shoulder rig counter weight. AND THE PRICE! I've seen 2 pound proprietary counter weights listed for seventy-five bucks!
Thank you Manfrotto!

More position options than a sandbag and it stays where you put it. I'll probably get the 10lb sometime.

Comments about Manfrotto 172 Counter Balance Weight - 3 lbs:
I use it on a reflector holder that sits on a lightstand. It does the job. Keeps my stand from toppling over. Easy to use and easy to pack up. I also like the bright orange color as it works to warn people of an extended arm. Although my holder does not extend far, it is a nice safety touch to have.

These things are very useful for me. I make all kinds of weird contraptions to get certain video shots and these weights are just the thing many times.
Of course Bogen – Manfrotto only sell good quality stuff.

Comments about Manfrotto 172 Counter Balance Weight - 3 lbs:
Compact and dense. I wanted it to stabilize a light stand with a big umbrella on top which makes it unstable in one direction. I did not want to use a sandbag. I wanted to clamp something on firmly, unable to slip.
I set up the lightstand with one leg pointing opposite the 60 inch umbrella and then clamp this to the underside of that forward leg so it just clears the floor. That low weight at the end of the extended lightstand leg makes the entire setup quite stable even with a large umbrella.
Useful amounts of general purpose, clamp-on weight in a small package. Cons? It's heavy of course.
