I like this screen a lot. By rights it should have probably shipped as the default with the D3. It took me about 5-10 minutes to install this just going by some rough instructions on the internet. It's not too complicated to figure out, which I like. (Just mind the dust!)
The reason I bought this, though, was because I was lead to believe it would be easier to focus my lenses manually than the default screen, especially in darkly lit rooms. And so far, I'm not really getting that. If there's an advantage it's pretty slim.
But it works well, the grid lines are a welcomed bonus, and don't interfere at all. The red square still lights up red and brightly in the viewfinder to help me see what I'm focusing on -- nothing is taken away with this screen; more is added in a very unobtrusive way.
The one criticism everyone seems to give is that the grid lines don't light up like they did in the D200/D300. And I wish they did, but hey, they still function and they're useful. Whoever said that by wearing glasses you can't see the grid lines sounded bitter and jaded. I wear glasses all the time and the grid lines are pretty easy to see under most shooting circumstances.
In summary, I like it and I feel it was worth the cost even though it doesn't really serve me the way I'd hoped.

Comments about Type E Focusing Screen for Nikon D3 Digital Camera:
This screen should be the standard screen shipped with the camera body. I think that the term "on-demand" in the description is a bit misleading since the grid is always present and does not light up as do other Nikon camera grids.

Comments about Type E Focusing Screen for Nikon D3 Digital Camera:
I had a Fuji S5 Pro based on a lower-level Nikon body. And it came with a grid focusing screen and it lit up as well. here you need to pay extra, go through the work to put it in (though it is quite easy), and it doesn't light up. Seems petty for a $5K camera body.

Comments about Type E Focusing Screen for Nikon D3 Digital Camera:
Easy to put in once you figure out how to get it out of the frame that holds it in the camera. One small clip and it swings down for easy removal and easy install. I put it in a D3s. Comes with plastic gripper tool to remove and install.

Comments about Type E Focusing Screen for Nikon D3 Digital Camera:
Excellent replacement screen with reference grid lines makes it much easier to maintain horizontal and vertical reference. This should be standard for all pro level cameras - I have no idea why one needs to purchase it as an accessory. I have used E type screens on all my cameras since the F2 days.

This adds grid lines to the D3's viewfinder. Easy to install, and no disadvantages. I find it particularly useful with the PC-E lenses.

I have been using a E screen since my days with a new F2 film camera. The e screen is great for organizing the picture plane and especially good with architecture but I find it very useful with landscape work as well.B and H has a great inventory [...].Easy to install.

I read on nikonmall that this will fit a D700. [...]To my disappointment it did not. This screen appears slightly larger, but the problem may be that the tab is in a different spot. Just saving those that are considering trying it out. Otherwise I'm sure this would definitely be a benefit. Even if only a two more lines improvement over factory screen.

I use this screen to keep the virtical lines in the image vertical.
The grid could be a little bolder,
The grid needs to go completly through the screen not stop on eather side of the focusing area.

Comments about Type E Focusing Screen for Nikon D3 Digital Camera:
Started using focusing screens with grid lines way back in the Nikon F3HP days, then with the F4s, and now with the Nikon D3 DSLR. In my line of outdoor/wildlife photography it is the type of screen you must have. Makes it a lot easier to compose, shoot and move on when some wild, hungry animal is looking at you for his next meal.Highly recommend.

Comments about Type E Focusing Screen for Nikon D3 Digital Camera:
This screen is really helpful for keeping horizontal and vertical lines straight. Very usefull for landscape photography.
It's not illuminated like D300/D300s.
It took me about 5 minutes to install reading the instructions on the manual.

Comments about Type E Focusing Screen for Nikon D3 Digital Camera:
This screen is useful only when there are enough light to see the grid. Actually, it is very difficult to see the grid if you are wearing glasses (my case). Nikon, in this case, could done a better job, like the grids in D300.

Comments about Type E Focusing Screen for Nikon D3 Digital Camera:
I'm wasn't paying enough attention to level/plumb in haste to keep up with a group of tourists - this screen adds just enough of a grid to remind me to line up the horizon, without being intrusive - saves pp work. Pretty cheap, very easy to install, although it did arrive with a couple of clumps of black plastic sitting on it in the box.

Very nice, however, it is NOT an on demand grid, nor is it illuminated.. Else, I now feel comfortable as I alway bought that screen for my previous bodies. I do like the built in mode in the D2H/D2x and Fuji S series.
