My primary use is for recording at meetings. Microphone works great, picks up every bit of sound. Since it has no moving parts such as in old tape recorders, no more unnecessary noise during recording. And it is lightweight.

I use this to record lectures, talks and interviews. I'm happy with the sound quality and range, although I haven't recorded anyone from more than about 10 ft. away. Plugging the recorder into a computer and dragging audio files onto your desktop is a godsend - although you need the windows media audio app. to listen on a computer (or buy a program to convert wma to mp3 to play in iTunes) ... but overall, awesome!

Voice recorder used for note-taking, occasional conversations and radio clips while driving. Clarity is CD quality. Have used tape/voice recorders for 20-years to assure that everything important is noted. Recording a doctor or lawyer visit can be invaluable; you can record any conversation to which you are a party, but not for eavesdropping.
There's only one AAA battery, 2-3 weeks; use lithium if affordable and always carry a spare.
