The Leica 50mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Lens is the standard lens in the Summarit-M class of rangefinder lenses. These Summarit-M lenses are designed to offer traditional Leica optical and mechanical excellence, while positioned at a price level below the current M ASPH lenses. With a maximum aperture of f/2.5, and by applying classical and proven spherical lens designs, these lenses provide excellent quality. These features also result in a very compact design.
This lens has been updated with the "6-bit" coding, which allows the digital M camera to read this information optically and to identify which lens is being used. The camera can then (optionally) apply a "final stage" software based vignetting correction (for RAW images the lens used is simply recorded, no change is made).

Comments about Leica 50mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Manual Focus Lens (Black):
I bought this lens because my budget is limited and I am not a pre-owned lenses guy (been burned before). At this price point, this will be the best Leica lens you can buy. Lots of review not favor this lens (I don't know why), but I found it is actually much better than I thought. The contrast, warm color rendition, smooth bokeh... I didn't regret to get it. If you want to get into Leica's world with limited budget, this is the one to go with. Compact to carry around, you can just load it in the pocket without heavy gear carrying bag. Add a adapter to NEX-5N, it is the best combo for portrait. Unfortunately, the hood cost you a lot and not very well constructed. It will not lock in place. Any 3rd party's 39mm screw-on hood will do the work better.

Comments about Leica 50mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Manual Focus Lens (Black):
I returned to Leica after 19 years. My old lenses were the 35 & 50 summicrons. The new summarit is the equal & seems sharper. The luscious Leica micro-contrast resembles images from an 8 by 10 view camera.
The digital Leica sensor is nothing short of amazing and is miles better than the finest grained 35mm film. In my view, it betters many medium format films and when you add the Leica optics, the tonal range is stunning.
This optic is fast, quiet, well-built and very light. You can pop wide and tele summarits in your jacket and still travel lighter than any other full frame kit.

Comments about Leica 50mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Manual Focus Lens (Black):
German quality with super sharp results. I bought a Micro four-thirds adapter and use it on my Lumix GF-1 (100mm equivalent). It's a little hard to focus on that set up through the small Lumix viewfinder, but you soon adapt to it. Great portrait lens when used with the Lumix GF-1

Comments about Leica 50mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Manual Focus Lens (Black):
I bought this lens for my M9 and it ended up being the most used lens. The lens is light weight which makes it ideal for travel. It is sharp and its speed is just perfect at f2.5.

Comments about Leica 50mm f/2.5 Summarit-M Manual Focus Lens (Black):
A very light and compact lens with excellent optical characteristics and produces very sharp images with excellent color and pleasant bokeh. The lens appears to be very well built. I accidentally dropped it from a dining table top onto floor carpeting, and observed no impact to the optical performance of the lens.

I use the 50 mm on my Leica M9. You can't go wrong. A Leica needs a Leica. Solid build. Sharp exposures. It's expensive but I think it's essentially as good as a pricier f/2.0. [...]
