International orders*This Leica Rectangular Metal Lens Hood with Cap is specifically designed for the 75mm and 90mm f/2.5 M lenses. It comes supplied with a custom cap that is especially designed for this hood.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

Comments about Leica Metal Lens Hood with Cap for 75 & 90mm f/2.5 M Lens:
Because of the exterior screw mounting, there is a protective ring that must be removed from the lens before the lens hood can be screwed on. This protective ring must be kept and stored for later installation when the lens hood is removed to avoid damage to the external screw threads on the lens. As the protective ring is small, it is a pain to retain for later use. I had much rather have a lens hood that merely attaches to the end of the lens temporarily, or an extending hood like the 50 lens. Because the lens hood further extends the length of the lens, my 75mm f2.5 would no longer fit in my Hadley bag with a camera body resting on top. I ended up taking the hood off permanently and it now sits in a drawer unused.

Comments about Leica Metal Lens Hood with Cap for 75 & 90mm f/2.5 M Lens:
The 90mm f/2.5 has an internal filter thread and an external hood thread, and it comes with a "protection ring" screwed onto the hood thread, which is very thin and doesn't provide much protection. You really do need the hood. The hood can screw on forwards or backwards to save space, but I find that the lens fits decently into the soft case that comes with it even with the hood attached the right way. I'm giving the hood 4 stars out of 5 because I really think it should be included with the lens (I guess the theory is that if you have both the 75 and 90 you can use the same hood).

Comments about Leica Metal Lens Hood with Cap for 75 & 90mm f/2.5 M Lens:
I read on-line [@] that this hood fits the thread on Leica X1 when the knurled ring on X1 is removed (which suggests that Leica may plan to release accessories some day). It does fit. When the hood is fully seated on the X1 thread the hood is exactly as long as the extended lens (pictures at that site); it is not longer like a hood should be, but it does protect the lens from the sides. However (not shown at that site) the thread on X1 is shorter than the thread inside the hood by about half. When the hood is screwed on only far enough so that no X1 threads are visible, and as far as it is actually gripping X1 threads, there is a gap of about 2 mm between the back of the hood and the body. There is also an equal extension beyond the front of the extended lens, i.e. it is a very small lens hood that extends past the lens by about 2 mm. The only problem is that the hood needs to be screwed up tight against something to feel stable. One needs some sort of gasket or spacer between the back of the hood and the body. So far I have used small rubber bands. They prove that it will work as a very short hood for X1, but a better spacer needs to be found. When I find it, I will be completely satisfied with this hood (5 stars!)

This is what I needed, although paying almost $100 for it seems excessive. Very durable and reliable hood and cap. All metal construction.
