As a preface to the review let me say that I am a full-time professional photojournalist and publish images weekly in glossy magazines and newspapers in most major countries. That being said, this review is for anyone interested but the application of the lens falls in the realm of "heavy use" under ALL conditions (Rain, humidity, sand, dust, heat, cold, inside my bag on my shoulder)
I have written before that I typically HATE zoom lenses because I am a snob for primes. Though, I believe Nikon has always produced superb zoom lenses in very utilitarian focal lengths for professionals and discriminating amateurs alike.
I Read the reviews and not surprised at the raves! So I headed to my local to rent this lens for a week-long assignment. I ended up buying this lens and yanking my deposit on a 24mm f1.4 having been so pleased.
Also, keep in mind I owned the 17-35 2.8 and the 28-70 2.8 years ago and loved them both but always considered them like hammers....just to get a job done. So I have solid footing in comparing the lens to previous Nikon zooms used in the same setting
* Build & Quality is Second only to something Zeiss, or Leica makes. For an AF professional lens, it is WORTH EVERY PENNY in this department. Well balanced in your hand, Sturdy "drum-tight" construction with ample seals. The circumference of the lens makes handling a snap both on and off the body especially considering the weight. Nikon scored BIG with the design in that typically lenses in this class and aperture rating are short and fat and of course relatively heavy. Though not at all excessive, the weight is a reality of producing incredible images and even many amateurs have come to realize a little extra weight in the bag is well worth it.
The focus ring surface is tacky, and moves smoothly when rotated. Silent with no hesitations. There is enough resistance for fast accurate manual adjustments.
The Zoom Ring is PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT!!! For me, I wish my 70-200 VRII Zoom Ring was as good! Smooth as butter with the perfect calibration of resistance. Close your eyes and practice you can practically hit the mark as you go from 24 to 70. The reduced circumference of the lens makes zooming the full range a precise single steady turn. Its the first lens I have been able to zoom while using my AF rear focus switch and get EVERY SHOT in focus on the first time. Again, the rubber is tacky and textured with a beveled edge for using your thumb or full hand or any style to get effective turns fast and accurate over a wide surface.
*The supplied accessories are as usual for Nikon; Excellent. The hood is easy to engage with wide threads and finally a decent lock that wont back out on you. I don't use the carry case but its certainly a nice supplied accessory made of ballistic nylon. I have seen shooters use them in the field for years without any problems so I guess they are rather useful.
* IMAGE QUALITY: well, I rented first as stated before and that sample knocked my socks off!! I tested my sample in the field and in my studio for a couple weeks now and they are the same. I Can't find a weakness in a single aperture for this lens at any focal length. Images are sharp with color reproduction being spot on! The bokeh produced is excellent at all focal lengths to boot.
I have opted for Wide Open 2.8 in Many instances where a flash could have easily been used. As many know 2.8 can be a nail-biter for press shooters at that shallow DOF we get worried and I can tell you this lens has earned my total trust. Images shot wide open are TACK SHARP!
*AF SYSTEM: As fast as can be. NEVER a problem keeping up even in high contrast and tricky situations. Unbelievably quiet you have to just engage the AF and look at the distance scale for fun!
Well that's my .02 and I am not a professional review guy so if I left anything out now let me say I have No Complaints ONLY RAVES. I LOVE THIS LENS AND FULLY TRUST IT.
There is NOTHING WORSE when you combine the variables of conditions and operator error etc with gear that can't be relied upon EVERY TIME. Well, this lens lets you worry about the externals and you can rest assured when you pull this out of your bag its all about YOU and the situation you are shooting.
5 stars across the board

I think this lens took great pictures and the DOF was amazing for the short time I had it. But sadly I had to send it to nikon to be repaired. After only 3 weeks of use I noticed large dust specks through the back glass! also the lens zoom was not as smooth as I have read about. I got in touch with nikon and after I sent it in they agreed with me and are repairing it under warranty. Its sad that I paid so much for this lens just to have it be repaired less than a month later. Nikon has been great though and hopefully I will get it back soon and have no further problems with it.

I shot with this lens last Sunday doing mostly portrait work. The lens worked perfectly! I shot with studio strobes, on camera flash, and in low lighting situations. The lens worked fine in every application that day.

This lens would probably be a bit better with VR capabilities, but really, we managed w/o that for years. Also, if it did include it, I wonder what it would do to the overall weight?
This lens is critically sharp. The construction is first rate. It's hard to go wrong if you've got this in your bag. And if it is in your bag, why isn't it on your body?

Sharp, Fast, great images... What else could you ask for. Superior to the older "The Beast" 28-70. The nano coating reduces the flare very well.

Rented this lens first to shoot a wedding, then decided I couldn't do without it. Instant focus, sharp end-to-end, and a range that complements my 80-200 AF-S well. Others have called it heavy but it feels great to me. Only down side is the price, but once I get past the initial pain the quality will offset that

Great travel lens with good range, if you don't wanna carry extra 3-4 lenses, then this is the one you should have it on. I only carry this lens for outdoor with another 50mm 1.4G to shoot indoor. I am satisfied with the image quality it came out. However, this lens is super heavy, and it is why I only carry it with another 50mm 1.4G.

Finally got this lens after reading about it for so long (had to save up for it). I'm blown away by the amount of light it pulls in. When the atmosphere gets dim I can still shoot at relatively low ISOs. It will find focus even in dimmest of low-light situations, and find it fast. A wonderful lens, perfect to carry around when I don't want to carry the whole photo kit. It's made in Japan, and that shows in the price as well in the workmanship. This is lens crafting of a very high order.

Excellent. I bought it to use on my Nikon D300s. The sharpness is amazing, fast autofocus, and high brightness. It is heavy, but it is logical, I know that intimidates the hood, but it really is a lens pra all work. I use it for books and fashion to documentary photography because the 35mm becomes 24 which is the traditional focal.
Hoping to have my full frame camera, I'm putting together the team with FX lenses.
Highly recommended, best of Nikon in the segment.

What can I say about this lens that hasn't already been said. The build quality is outstanding and the images are just stunnung. I upgraded from an all-purpose lens to this beauty and have not regretted a moment. Sure, it's pricey compared to third party, but there's just no substitute for genuine Nikon when it comes to glass. I did not want to "settle" or look back at my images and wonder how they might be if I had splurged for the real deal.

Clearly, the sharpest zoom under 70mm that's out there. The sharpness is uncanny. Portraits: you're better off with a 85mm (my favorite go to), 105mm macro for headshots and 135mm DC for bokeh!

I've been doing photography for about 22 yrs. I've had many top end cameras and lenses over the years as well as shooting with Canon gear and now Nikon gear. This is by far one of the Quickest focusing and most accurate lenses I have ever owned. With a focal length of 24-70 and an aperture of 2.8, In plain and simple terms… It Just Works !!

This is the sharpest zoom lens that you can own; it's simply amazing.
Ok, but portraits?
Not
You and everyone who's ever gone beyond Instamatics either owns or has owned or has shot with a 50 mm lens. The 50mm lens is special & unique because when you use your eyes, the width of your field of view (without moving the eyeball from left to right) is about 50mm (an eagle's view is set for distance to see that rabbit from long distances) . From a portrait point of view, any lens wider (10-49mm) makes your nose more prominent, i. e. bigger. Do you know any woman who wants a portrait with her nose bigger than what she sees in a mirror?
For the other side of this particularly great lens, it zooms above a 50mm lens in the range of 51-70mm. Therefore, the nose would appear smaller than when using a 50mm lens. This is a positive.
However, the range for a portrait shot to look pleasing to the eye is in the full frame range of 85, 105, 135 and sometimes 200mm. But you don't have a full frame camera so you'll use the DX sensor multiplication factor of about 1.5 for Nikons and 1.6 for Canons using the 70 mm zoomed portion of the fabulous Nikon 24-70.
Not
This is such wrong information that it brings me to tears!
Using the terminology from above: the nose in the portrait photograph, the beloved nose will grow like Pinnochio for any lens wider (smaller lens number like 24mm) than any other less wide lens (with a bigger lens number like 135mm, for example)
However, you have a DX "sensor " so the multiplication factor magically transforms your 70mm lens into a very cool 105 mm portrait lens?
Wrong
The 70mm lens is always a 70mm lens and it never changes. What changes is that your sensor is SMALLER! So, what did THE SENSOR do? Answer: the sensor did not record the edges of the photograph because those light rays of the image fell outside of the outer most edges of THE SENSOR. The lens was designed for a big full frame sensor, so when you have a smaller sensor, then the image is simply too big for the small sensor...and the image falls off the edges. This means that what you did record was only the centermost part of the image. On a Nikon that means that the SENSOR kept the center 2/3 of the image and it threw away the outer 1/3!
But here's the key point, if you had a photograph in your hand and you used a scissors to cut 1/3 rd of the photo on the perimeter... would the remaining image in you hand suddenly, magically change to a new perspective, OF COURSE NOT!
Therefore, using a wonderful 24-70 lens cannot change "the nose" to a smaller, prettier, more well proportioned nose of the bigger lens.
So, what does it do and why is everyone confusing me with this 1.5 DX lens conversion factor? Answer: because the DX image becomes more narrow, its image narrowness becomes identical to the narrow image of a longer lens on a full frame camera. So, the narrowness of the 70 mm DX setting on a 24-70 zoom lens will end up making the same NARROWNESS of a longer 105mm lens on a full frame camera(with or without the outer edges of the photograph cut off with scissors.
BUT IT WON'T CHANGE THE PINNOCHIO NOSE INTO A CUTE WELL PROPORTIONED NOSE BECAUSE THE CENTER PORTION (remember the scissors) IS COMPLETELY UNCHANGED.
Therefore, that's why the very, very sharp 24-70 zoom is a very poor portrait lens.
(ps: in a portrait shot, women want to look like what they see in flawless skinned, re-touched fashion shots that they see in magazines. They don't want to see every imperfection, so a softer (non-super duper sharp) image is more flattering!
The 24-70mm ranks as one of the best lens in the world but just don't call it your best portrait lens, please. It just ain't so!

this is an amazing lens. I'm so glad I saved up for it. Every photo comes out crystal clear and never seems to need edited, which is awesome.
The only negative thing I can say about it is that it's super heavy, especially when u have a sb-900 flash all that equipment is heavy.
But I really do recommend it. It's good for weddings and portraits.
