The Nikon AF-S 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens (Black) is a premium ultrafast super telephoto lens, currently the longest in the Nikon autofocus lens system. It is a very robust and durable lens. Its lightweight construction incorporates a magnesium die-cast barrel, and professional-grade dust and moisture sealing allows it to be used in more rugged situations.

This lens features the improved Vibration Reduction (VR II) system that allows handheld telephoto shooting, even in less-than-ideally lit conditions. The VR system minimizes image blur caused by camera shake, and offers the equivalent of shooting at a shutter speed of about 4 stops faster. In addition, this lens also features the Tripod Detection mode, which reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release, when mounted on a tripod.

High-powered, super telephoto lens optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both the Nikon FX- (23.9 x 36mm) and DX-format image sensors.
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization--Vibration Reduction, engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens, enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and video capture.
New tripod detection mode reduces vibration that may occur due to shutter release when mounted on a tripod.
Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and powerful, super-quiet operation.
Exclusive Nano Crystal Coat and a meniscus protective glass element combine to further reduce ghosting and flare for even greater image clarity.
Three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements control chromatic aberrations while enhancing color, sharpness and contrast, even at the widest aperture settings.
Rugged, reliable and lightweight, this lens features a magnesium die-cast barrel and professional-grade, dust- and moisture-resistant construction.
New A/M focus mode provides fast, secure switching between auto and manual focus operation.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

This lens is amazingly sharp with very fast auto-focus. It is heavy, but still possible to handhold for a short time and obtain sharp shots. It is everything you expect and more - a true joy to use this lens. Its only drawbacks are price and size.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

This was purchased from B+H and recieved when a friend hand carried it over. (no she wasnt thrilled to learn it was 'only' 21lbs boxed, and not the 32lbs stated on Carton)
Used it straight out of the box, only change was a wimberly foot to replace the Nikon foot. Amazingly sharp, the colours and Bokeh are superb. Whereas the 400mm 2.8 didnt impress at first (it took a while to be comfortable with it, and get the sort of sharpness i was looking for) the 600mm has performed amazingly well from the outset. perhaps the technique learnt with the 400 being the reason. Its not handholdable, (if you are lucky it is for about 1 shot for mere mortals), and benefits from a wimberly head or monopod. VR does help at times, but i generally switch it off and shoot wide open on AP, (thats what i bought it for)quality from edge to edge is absolutely superb, and provided you have good long lens technique, this is a truly amazing lens which is worth every one of the lots of cents it costs!!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

I am a wildlife photographer (www.lalithphotography.com) and a Nikon fan. Last month I added (after a deep and deep thought as it cost you really) Nikon 600mm F/4 lens to my armoury and was on shooting sessions of birds and leopards. No two words, this is fantastic! Sharp and quick focusing. I feel it's a must for a wildlife photographer. But it is heavy, I really feel it! So little worried; how should I carry when I travel overseas? Also very careful in handling (it is very expensive and almost the price of my jeep I used for wildlife). Nevertheless I am fully satisfied.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

It's a great feeling to be part of the modern and improved products from B&H and Nikon. I have been a wildlife photographer for 20 years, mainly birds.
It's difficult to remain moderate about the new 600m lens, it's technology is faultless, excellent to use and the images make most of my previous work look ordinary! Before I purchased this lens I remember wondering how far short of my expectations it would fall, nearly all do to some extent. This product is truly excellent in every way and if B&H has other customers in two minds about buying, because of quality, relax it's as advertised. For me the price of the product is reasonable and fair given the capability and quality of the lens.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

The 600 F4 is a supurb lens. It is very fast to focus and the VR is very quiet. Image quality still very good with the 1.4x. I have not yet tried the 1.7x or 2.0x with this lens.

My only nit is that it doesn't fit in my LowePro lens treker 600 with the body on the lens, like the 500mm does.

A great lens for nature photography, particularly birds for which I use it. It focuses rapidly and accurately. I've used it with a 2X extender as well with good results. It has VR for both on and off the tripod although I could never suggest using it as a hand held lens - it is simply too heavy. It is heavy to carry around but one is to expect that with a lens with this focal length and quality.

Used for canoe and kayak racing and yes birds. Took it to St Augustine gator park and it was almost too much lens. However most of the keepers were from this lens. Also took it to the Everglades and took pictures of butterflies hand held. It was the only way to get close to them. The pictures came out sharp and crisp. Then it was off to Marco Island and the owls. Took some video using the D3s. I couldn't believe the results. The video was unbelievable with the 600mm. You need a good tripod and a Whimberly head. Yes it is heavy but I bought a Bob Revolution baby stroller to help carry it down the board walks in the Everglades. This was a retirement gift to myself.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

All most important technical parameters of the given lens as clearness, contrast and an image color rendition, speed and accuracy of focusing, quality of a design by right deserve the most and most ecstatic responses.
Quality of the image is almost ideal even on an open diaphragm f4, therefore in difficult conditions of insufficient light it is possible to use confidently f4, from lacks for the given diaphragm it is possible to note insignificant a vignette, appreciable at shooting against a homogeneous background, for example the blue sky; this lack is completely eliminated at change of a diaphragm to f5.6.
Work of a lens with the Teleconverter 1.4 doesn't cease to surprise: tremendous sharpness and contrast of the image, accuracy of an auto focus is faultless, even at a bird flying to a forehead an auto focus to be directed confidently, quickly and precisely. Almost a little notable decrease quality of a picture at use of the Teleconverter 1.7, I safely would confirm that the image remains Still magnificent. In normal conditions of illumination focus to be directed quickly, confidently and precisely.
Separate words are deserved by antivibrating system. At shooting from hands at use VR it is possible to receive accurate shots up to 1/100 and even 1/60, at use with the Teleconverter of 1.4 these parameters don't worsen. In difference from the first version VR that the second version steadier, smooth and silent in work was used on NIKKOR 200-400mm f4 IF ED Lens.
About a design: all in the best traditions Nikkor - matchless quality the assemblages balanced and a convenient design, all management and buttons - are logical and easily cope to the touch. One characteristic detail possibly thanks to technology Nano Crystal Coat a forward lens looks almost colourless and thus is much less appreciable for birds that allows to conduct more effective shooting.
Is more tremendous-qualitative pictures are received for 1.5 months of use of the given lens. It is fantastic optics, I urgently recommend to use it in photographing of birds and animals

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 600mm f/4G ED VR AF Lens:

As a professional photographer I have used Nikon lenses for the last 21years. Nikon optical glass is the best in the World. The 500mmf4 & 600f4 are both crucial to my magazine sports photography: edge-to-edge sharpness and ease of use (fast / accurate focus, light weight and exceptional build quality are second to none.I would not be without my trusted Super-telephoto Nikon's. My Tropical Grey Nikon 600mmf4 I purchased from B&H, [...]. Highly recommend using the TC14E-2 when you need slightly more reach on difficult assignments,/ from f4- f5.6 but images are as sharp as they are from the prime lens. The Nikon 500/600 f4's are the best super-telephotos available. If your thinking of buying a Sigma or other make, choose a good second-hand Nikon everytime - its the optical glass that is all important, not the price !

Using this lens for wildlife photography to capture bald eagles on a nest that is 300 to 400 yards away. Use a Nikon D3x and Nikon 1.4 teleconverter and photos are crisp and clear. Lens is supported with a Wimberley WH101 Head w/quick release and Giottos Aluminum 3-sec Tripod. Teleconverter produces a 860mm lens. Auto focus is quick and acurate. Right now I keep the camera attached to the lens and have built a craddle for the lens/camera combination to take weight off camera. My previous big lens was a Nikon 200-400mm f/4 G AFS VR. The Telephoto AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4 G ED VR Autofocus Lens is well worth the price. It is one supper lens for wildlife. I am staff photographer for the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and am going to use this lens with a lot more wildlife.

I thought the Nikon 200-400mm f/4 was a nice lens until I received the 600m f/4 lens. But the wait was well worth it. Takes fantastic photos that are sharp and clear. Auto focus works especially with the TC14EII 1.4X Teleconverter which pumps it to 850mm. Even with the Nikon TC-17EII 1.7X and TC-2EII 2.0X Teleconverter with manual focus it produces clear photos. Used TC-2EII 2.0X Teleconverter to photograugh Bald Eagles with D3x in DX Mode at 1800mm and about 300+ yards. The Wimberley Head is a must with wildlife. This is the best lens I have every owned. It is well worth the price and the wait. Had to make a cradle filler with foam for it so pressure is not put on D3x with lens attached in transporting it.

I am a wildlife biologist and use this lens as both a spotting scope and for wildlife photography. I live in the southwest, and find doing sharp long-shots with this lens very difficult at times due to heat waves - don't try taking pics of desert bighorn in August with it... Thus, trying to get closer to avoid distortion puts me within range for using my 300 f2.8, and the heat waves go away (at least a lot more). It is an awesome lens to use on days with cold, clear air - especially on wintering bald eagles or other sensitive species like that.
