The Canon BG-E2N Vertical Grip/Battery Holder adds a vertical shutter release, and is compatible with up to two BP-511, 511A, 512, or 514 lithium-ion battery packs, or six AA batteries with included BGM-E2 battery holder. The BG-E2N provides an additional shutter release, main dial, AE lock/FE lock and AF point selection controls for easier vertical shooting, as well as a 1/4-20 size tripod mount thread.
The BG-E2N replaces and improves upon the orginal Canon BG-E2 grip by adding water-resistant, and dirt-resistant seals for greater durability and to match the water resistant capability of the EOS 40D camera body. It is also compatible with the Canon EOS 20D, 30D and 50D.

If you are looking for a grip to use on your 40d BG-E2N is the best choice. I am a professional photographer and am familiar with most of Canon's line, I use the 40d as a backup/remote camera for most of my work. I bought the grip because it really helps handling when working with big lenses like a 300mm 2.8 or a 400mm 2.8- both of which I use regularly.
Will this grip make your 40d feel like a 1d series body? No, but it does give you a much better handle on the camera, especially if you have big hands and/or have pro-sized zooms and telephotos. The grip makes the camera feel much more balanced, and having a little more surface area for your hands is always a plus. Keep in mind even though the grip is plastic you are still packing two batteries inside, so the weight of the camera will go up. This is not an issue to me, but if you hike or want to travel light, you may find yourself leaving the grip at home.
I have not used the previous model, but I can tell you that compared to the Nikon grip for the d200, this grip is much better built and seems to fit the camera better. It is quite sturdy and that is important if you wish to use the grip+40d on a tripod. The flex between the camera body and the grip is minimal. The grip is plastic though, so some flex is to be expected.
I can also tell you that this grip is quite durable, I am careful with my gear, but hits are sometimes unavoidable and this grip has taken several and kept doing it's job.
The seals on the grip seem to work quite well too. I recently had the camera out in a desert shooting a motorcycle race (Read: lots of dust), and when I later cleaned the 40d rig, the grip had no dust inside the battery box itself. All the switches and buttons seem to work fine too, and that is saying a lot considering how much dust was on the camera.
The contacts seemed fine too, but I would be careful about water getting in the actual camera body through the gap where the camera joins the grip and the grip's stem goes into the body. As near as I can tell there is little to no sealing and given enough water/dust/time, unwanted particles could enter here. I have found that this is the nature with most grips.
Bottom line for this product is: if you want a grip for your 40d, don't hesitate to buy this thing. It is well built and fits the camera quite well. If you have to shoot with it in adverse conditions, I would keep an eye on it like I would any camera, but I wouldn't obsess over it.

I am sports Photographer. I shoot indoors and out. For shooting inside it is a fine item however when shooting outside in wet weather or snowy conditions i have found that there is a small gap that does not seal properly to the bottom of the camera, i have had moisture get inside that gap and short out my batteries, and the back-up AA holder is NOT designed to last very long, I have lost shots for outside use because of that. Inside use I have never had any problems and would recommend it for that type of use only. Also a great feature is that it will run on just on battery and for longer events the two batteries last forever, i have yet to run out of power while using it indoors!

Comments about Canon BG-E2N Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
My friend and I shoot triathalons together and I got tired of raising my right elbow over my head to hit the shutter button. My friend has a knock off brand grip and he has occasional problems with the shutter button. Was out shooting this weekend and I'm finding the grip to be solid and reliable. I think it will be worth the extra expense I paid. Absolute necessity for slow run or relaxed shots of athletes.

Hve been looking for this battery pack for months, stores did not have them including photo shops in Nev and Cal. Found it with B&H in moments. Love the easy manner of exchanging regular batteries when they are low, compared to having to recharge the regular battery pack that comes with my camera. Now I have the pleasure of both when I am out in the field with no where to recharge my battery. Thanks B&H...will deal with you folks again. [...] Vic Cantu Jr.

I primarily use my camera for outdoor and air show photography. The addition of the battery grip increased the operating time between battery changes and an extra benefit is that it helps balance the camera with larger lenses.

This is a must-have for portrait shooters who tire of contortions to hold camera vertical and press the shutter. The extra battery capacity is a plus. Only negative is that it's a lot of extra weight to heft for long periods. Comfortable balance.

Comments about Canon BG-E2N Vertical Grip/Battery Holder:
I was recently listening to a podcast about the advantages of using a battery grip & finally decided to check one out. Originally I purchased the Vello brand & it was not working correctly so I returned it. I was then wondering if I should take another chance & try the same brand or buy the Canon one. I'm glad I went with the Canon this time. This grip is solid & really fits the camera well. I really like how easy it is to switch from landscape to portrait and how much more stable I feel holding the camera.

Great purchase. Really makes the camera easier to use in different positions & balances out the weight more evenly especially if you use telephoto lenses. I travel a lot and it's a must to be able to extend the amount of time between battery charges.
