I was excited when the new Baryta-based digital photo papers started coming out, as I do mostly black-and-white prints, and these papers are the closest you can come to the deep blacks and smooth tonality of an air-dried traditional darkroom print.
I was, however, dismayed at the extremely high cost of these papers. When Ilford Galerie Gold Fiber Silk came out recently at lower cost than most of its competitors, I decided to compare it to Innova FB Ultra Smoth, which had been my favorite, and to Harmon Gloss FB, which someone had recommended to me.
The Galerie Gold compared very well in the dark tones and the midtones. The whites are probably not quite as bright as the Innova or Harmon papers, but both of them have artificial brighteners, which means they may fade over time. The Ilford product does not have artificial brighteners.
The Ilford paper also is slightly warmer than the other two. Whether you like that or not is a matter of personal preference, but I have always liked warm papers. I made a few color prints also, and the warmer base worked well for those too.
I have decided to make Galerie Gold my standard though all three are truly excellent products.

Comments about Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk Paper (Letter, 8.5 x 11" - 50 Sheets):
I've been using this paper for some time now and while i really like it the surface is prone to scratches. I think it might have something to do with the baryta coating because i've tried other papers that use baryta and they tend to suffer the same fate.
Yes, i gave it four stars because it's a beautiful paper, but you have to be careful with it.

With the icc profile from Ilford's site; paper gives beautiful (accurate) bright colors. Has great contrast/tone. The quality reminds of my days in the darkroom; kind of act like fiber-base paper, but without all the curling.

I'm printing fine art photography exhibit quality display prints. The supplied Ilford profile was spot on after testing didn't make any changes. Superb quality with pigment inks. Great for both B&W and color prints. Most reasonably priced of the exhibition quality fiber based papers.

A beautiful paper with great tonal range and not too much texture which I like. Great for color work. I love this paper. Use it for exhibition prints.

Comments about Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk Paper (Letter, 8.5 x 11" - 50 Sheets):
I compared this paper to Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Baryta and Pearl, Epson Hot and Cold Press Fine Art papers. Printer was an Epson Stylus Photo R3000. I tested it with a standard test target photo.
The Gold Fiber Silk was the best overall, for accurate color reproduction, density of color, and sharpness of outline. The B&W areas of the test target were sharper with better detail than any of the others.
The paper has a low amount of OBA's. I was looking for papers with none in the other four. Interesting that I picked the one with some OBA's. What I found most interesting is that the Ilford paper stood up to fading tests at Aardenberg labs equal to if not better than the other four papers.
Better, the price is half that of these other fine papers. I use the paper for professional prints and exhibits.

Seem to have problems with the higher quality paper and the epson r2400/r2880. Leaves a streak sometime because of how wide the opening is on the printer. However, the paper is amazing.

Comments about Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk Paper (Letter, 8.5 x 11" - 50 Sheets):
The combination of excellent color, lovely texture, and reasonable cost make this highly-regarded paper my favorite for exhibition prints. The slightly textured surface is very similar to that of hot-pressed Ilford Multigrade B&W darkroom paper, which makes it excellent for B&W as well as color. The semi-gloss surface and compatibility with Epson's "photo black" ink renders deep blacks and a wide tonal range. Being semi-gloss rather than a flat matte like, say, Epson Ultrasmooth, it's well-suited to naked mounting (not under glass).

Comments about Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk Paper (Letter, 8.5 x 11" - 50 Sheets):
Smooth surface stands out from the slightly textured rest. Heavy and stiff and flat—no edge scuffing here. Good balance between warm and cool. Smells like the old days. Less expensive than most in the same league. What more could you want?

Comments about Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk Paper (Letter, 8.5 x 11" - 50 Sheets):
I've used Gold Fiber Silk in the 13x19" size and was so pleased with the result I ordered the 8.5x11" size for smaller prints to sell. I print on an Epson 3800 using the Ilford supplied icc profile and recommended settings. Although I primarily use Gold Fiber silk for color prints, I recently printed a black and white on the paper and it handles that well also. My only complaint, Ilford doesn't make the paper in 11x17", other than that, it's a great paper.

When looking at the Bayrta papers, the Hahnemeulhe is a fine paper, but almost 2x the cost of the Ilford. I do like the Hahnemeulhe paper texture as it is a little more prominent, but the Ilford is just an extremely awesome paper.
I'm using a Canon 9500 mk2 and the prints are spot on with the provided profiles from Ilford! Will be using this as my main paper for all my prints.

Despite the odd name, this is a wonderful Baryta paper with the look and feel of a "real" photo paper. I use it for my best prints, prints that I want to last, prints that have meaning. Prints made with this paper and my Epson 2880 are outstanding. Color or black and white prints are a pleasure to behold.
