This was my first external hard drive that i have ever bought, I wasn't sure if it was going to be noisy or loud or put off much heat or what. I will say though that it has thoroughly impressed me so far. There is relatively no heat put off by it, when it is completely silent in my room I can't even hear it running at max speed. It even is recognized faster than other external hard drives, I borrowed my friends Seagate a few days ago and it took nearly a minute for my laptop to recognize it compared to the few seconds that it takes this. In all i would give this hard drive a ten. It is inexpensive for the storage and it really cant be beat in any category.

I owned this product for 6 months and it failed. Paying $$$ to have the data recovered. 15 years of images/ iTunes, etc. Read the reviews online about WD External Hardrives. I'm not the only one. I wish I would have done the research before purchasing this product. WD is worthless in assisting you with the data recovery, trouble, replacement, etc. Beware of Western Digital Harddrives!!!!

I got this to replace an Iomega external drive that failed. So far, the WD My Book has worked great and the backup software is far superior's to Iomega's. Set up was easy and I love the fact that it backs up my Outlook as well. Operation is quiet and vibrates much less than the Iomega I had. For the money, this is a great product.

I bought this product in order to back up my files before my laptop crashed due to a virus. 500 GB was more than enough space for everything including my music and photos.
It is very portable and easy to use.
I hope it lasts a good while.

I use it to back up files previouly store on old hard drives. I like the triple interface, USB 2, SATA and firewire 400 as my computer has all three ports.

Comments about Western Digital 500GB My Book Home Edition Triple Interface External Hard Drive:
This external hard drive is simple, easy to use, and does what it is supposed to do with no start-up or back up problems; in my opinion, high praise for a product in a market of electronic devices that are often harder to use than they are useful. It's not tiny, but it's not intrusive on my desk. I use it to back-up copies of photographs from my I-MAC. It also provides an optional program that allows for automatic back-up of self-designated files/folders from your hard drive.

Plain and simple - Does what it is supposed to and from a reputable company...can not go wrong.

I bought the WD 500 GB Hard Drive to use with Time Machine. So far, so good. Set-up was a no-brainer. Plug and go. Totally silent. Main use is for photo back-up but it's nice to know everything else is being backed up without my doing anything.

I use this product to back up my desk top and when I am away and use my laptop I use it as my data disk because the esata connection is fast. The disk easy to install and fast.
I formatted mine as NTFS so I do not know anything about the software it comes with. I do not need it so I do not use it.

I bought this drive to use as an eSATA external storage for all my images. My root directory was getting full and slowing editing to a crawl. Back up to speed now.

Use as my primary backup drive. Installation a breeze. Backup software that comes with the disk is cumbersome to use and extremely slow in performing a backup. I uninstalled it and now use Windows XP's backup program, from which I can do incremental backups.

This drive is fine for backup, but I wouldn't try to use it as video scratch disk. Seems to heat up too much, and I've had one fail after a few month's use.

It's a bit cheap looking, mostly because it is very light (which is actually a big PRO) but it really rocks and possibly the most affordable Triple Interface on the market. Two thumbs up!
