The drive is a good, fast, seemingly dependable drive. If putting on a Mac, you may need some tips for getting it formatted for the Mac OS.
Here is what you need to do (why it's not in the documentation is beyond me):
In the Apple Disk Utility:
PARTITION your drive as 1 Partition and in that same window, SELECT OPTIONS.
There are 3 radio buttons in the popup window for formatting options. The drive was preset as the bottom button PC formatting and you have to chose the middle button which is for Mac.
Click apply and finish formatting your drive.
It will now work fully for Mac including Time Machine, etc.

Works just fine. Buy a eSATA cable if your computer has a eSATA port or, if you will use it a lot and you don't have such port, buy that as well is your motherboard will accommodate it. I found a triple to quadruple speed increase with eSATA over USB-2. Oddly it's formatted as FAT-32 and there are no included directions for reformat to NTFS which is, notwithstanding, an easy process. I found I could hot-plug (and unplug)the eSATA cable even though the very terse "manual" advises against it. In my experience it is altogether superior to the competing LaCie product. Pretty much a no-brainier.

We use this drive to back up our server. We have more than one and keep one of them off site.
Pretty cheap and simple way to back up data. We did have to add an e-sata card due to transfer speeds with USB.

Bought this 1TB to replace 500MB WD external drive. Need more storage. With new camera, image files are huge.
My 500MB worked great for some time. I purposely purchased WD based on IT recommendation. The only drawback and reason for only a four star rating is the shipping format as FAT. I had to reformat both drives to NTFS as soon as I got them. Not sure what WD software was on the drive, but is gone now. They should consider NTFS as their standard and let people wanting the older FAT do the reformatting.

Format before use or it won't transfer big files! Works basically like a big flash drive. I just erased all the files that came with, formatted and it was ready to go! Excellent and you don;t have to deal with annoying softwares...

so far, it's worked like a champ. The only things I would change (in re: todeficiencies), is that it only has 6 pin firewire i/o and my MacPro only has9 pin firewire. I just assume that the newer HD's have the updated (800mb)i/o.It inconveniently has no power switch. It also is available for less money at many other sites, hey, it's 1000 gig for [$]. I have had good luck with western digital and hope to continue the streak. thanks.AM

I have noticed that the industry is going towards USB2 and eSata drives, but this drive has it all firewire, usb2, and eSata, which makes it a versatile external hard drive. It is perfect for storing or backing up. I highly recommend this drive.
Its very reliable...I have 2 already! Also great with Time Machine!

Comments about Western Digital 1TB My Book Home Edition Triple Interface External Hard Drive:
This is the second of these I have purchased, and may buy a third if they are still available when I get around to it.
I primarily use these to store music, digital copies of movies, and photos. As I just got a new 12 megapixel camera, this space will be well used.
I have a Power Mac G5, and it is limited with it's USB expansion, so finding this drive had Firewire interface was great.
The fact that they can piggy-back off each other is even better. Now, I have both of them hooked up with using only 1 Firewire port. Leaving my other 2 open for various external devices.
The design on the WD items is vastly superior to the eye in my opinon. It looks like a slick black book near my tower instead of some massive odd shapped device like many other external drives do. I've had my first one for over a year and it's still running smooth. I fire the Mac up every day and it's never given me any trouble.
Great, right out of the box useability.
What I don't like about it, is minor. The light is quite bright on the front, so I've merely masked part of it off with black electrical tape which almost blends right in.
It would be nice to have a "manual" switch to be able to turn it off. The push button on the back doesn't have the weight to a switch that I would like.
But other than that, this is a fantastic device. And B&H has a great price, and is one of the few places that still have them.

I have used this product and a smaller 500gb version of it and it's great. It is one of the only external hard drives still on the market that still have firewire 400 for a really good price. I have transfered over a TB of data onto and from this hard drive multiple times and it works great still. I only trust western digital with my hard drives.

I will use this device for back-up. The reason I did not give it a 5-star rating is that the included software simply did not work. When I tried to apply the liscense (should happen automatically) it did not recignize the drive, and I could not figure out how to do it manually. Other than that it is wonderful to have the speed of the eSATA connection. Back-ups in 1/4 of the time...

Comments about Western Digital 1TB My Book Home Edition Triple Interface External Hard Drive:
If you have eSATA the drive is pretty fast. Games like NFS, Mirror's edge and FEAR run from the drive without a glitch.
Even though the manual says that the drive doesn't power on or off automatically with PC via eSATA, it does so with my HP Pavilion dv5 laptop.
I would have preferred it to be pre-formatted as NTFS.
At one time the drive froze during bootup and the OS didn't load but it worked fine after I pulled the plug and reconnected. It hasn't crashed again after that.
Occasionally I hear pretty audible clicks similar to the infamous click of death but SMART and the bundled full tests report no failure and I see no drop in performance either, still...
Also, SMART doesn't work when connected via eSATA which is annoying.
Overall the drive is a good buy (at least if you have eSATA) but I am a little worried about the one-time freeze and the occasional clicks.

Comments about Western Digital 1TB My Book Home Edition Triple Interface External Hard Drive:
My Book is pretty simple to use and has plenty of storage for my thousands of photos and videos as well, heck with this drive you can backup everything. It does take a long time to backup everything the first time, I am talking several hours but after that it is little better. One thing I don't like is if you disconnect the drive from your computer, which I do to keep at another location (disaster recovery), it prompts you to reinstall all the software that came with the drive upon reconnecting. The backup programs that come with the drive are easy to use and setup. Next time you turn on the drive the Anywhere Backup updates any files in your backup plan that were changed or added, pretty cool.

I purchased this primarily to store all my digital photos on. My laptop has an Esata connection so I bought an Esata cable to use. It makes My Book wonderfully fast to access and use.
My only complaint is that My Book didn't come with the Esata cable to begin with.
