I am currently using the WD 1tb drive for backup. I was running out of internal HD space and needed more, so after hours of research of various brands and sizes I decided to choose the 1tb studio edition. The backup software that is included works great and I have not encountered any problems. Although, I have stopped using the it because I upgraded my Mac to the Leopard OS, now I am using Time Machine instead. This drive integrates seamlessly with T.M. and again I have had no issues with backing up or restoring.
This is a great product and is perfect for Mac users, but I am willing to bet that it also works well for the PC people.
One thing I do find a bit annoying is the light on the front of the unit. It is bright and continuously flashing, pulsing and going through wave cycles. All of which are part of its normal function, I just find it distracting.

This thing was a nightmare. I needed a large drive to use as a scratch disk with my mac and Final Cut. I bought this for the Firewire capability. I will admit, when I removed it from the box, it was gorgeous. It definitely wins in the looks department and was sleek enough to compliment my Mac. That's about all the good I can say. The quick setup guide instructed me to plug in the drive and turn it on. I plugged it in, but it was already powered on. I simply assumed it was shipped with the power button in the "on" position and pushed the power button to turn it off....nothing. I pushed again...nothing. So I figured I'd just connect it to my Mac and use the sleep feature to power it down when I was done. I connected via FW800, my Mac identified it quickly with no problems and I was up and running. I installed the pre-loaded disk management software and thought I was good to go. When I eventually powered down my Mac, I noticed the light was still blinking in the "active" pattern. I pushed the power button on the drive again. No response. I spent the next couple hours searching the web and WD knowledgebase for answers. After upgrading the drive firmware and disk management software, per Western Digital's instructions, my Mac no longer recognized the drive via Firewire, only USB. Well, that ruined my intended use on the Mac. Furious, I reformatted the drive for Windows and figured I'd just use it as a backup storage drive on my Win laptop. The power button was just as useless on PC; however, it did finally go into sleep mode when I shut down. I thought all was finally well, until I restarted Windows. The drive would not come out of sleep mode. That was the last straw for me. I replaced it. You could assume I just got a bad drive, however, I found numerous similar complaints on the web.

Comments about Western Digital 1TB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive:
I use the product to back up photographs for my business. The set up went by like a breeze. I use it for an iMac. After that, it's a bit confusing to retrieve your storage. The WD customer support does not have long waits, but sometimes they are difficult to deal with - and I consider myself well versed in various accents. Overall I like the product and would recommend it.

I use this drive for archiving photo and video work. I has been flawless so far. Easy to setup, includes everything you need and works silently in the background. I don't even notice it chugging away quietly on the corner of my desk. Great buy for Mac users as it comes configured for Mac with no messy Windows software.

I've only been using this drive for about a week, but so far it performs great just like my other WD 500 GB My Book that I also use. The studio edition is a great choice, and the Quad Interface really makes it worth it.

I'm making a movie on FCP and my old hard drive would get over worked and heated. This hard drive not only transfers information and data much faster with the firewire 800 cables but it doesn't get overheated at all. The only not so good thing is that is much be plugged into an electrical outlet.

Sooner or later you'll have mounting problems with this drive. It worked for me the first few days and then it won't mount. I'm running a Macbook Pro. Run a google search and you'll see the problems people are having with this drive. My advice - stay away.

My son's band ran out of room for their music and also did not have a backup for what they did have. Eeek!
This unit was more than sufficient room and is a good performer. I also worked well on the Mac where they had issues with other devices.
They record directly to the device over Firwire and it has done well.

Comments about Western Digital 1TB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive:
I went into buying this product with almost a toss of a coin.
I was really shopping around and found WD 1TB and another competitor.
Both had very close interfaces, but what got me was the 5yr.warranty.
I just backed up a majority of my data (from a dying 6 yr.old hard drive) onto this 1TB drive and it is working fine. I've heard people having various issues with this drive, but don't know what the particular circumstances were.
I'm using this mainly to back-up media files (images, small movies, music, etc.) I'm not gluttonous when it comes to my files so this serves my needs just fine.
Also there's back up software you can set to back up your files and set when to do so. So overall it's a pretty consumer based hard drive.
If your a "professional" that will be using this for constant back up, probably aim for a heavier duty drive that is used to more data transferring, etc.. or to keep as a extra drive for those bigger files for extra backup.
No firewire 400 port, but comes with a 400-800 firewire cable.
Might as well use the 800 cable for transferring.
not easy to daisy chain USB, if needed

Comments about Western Digital 1TB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive:
I bought this to back up the three Macs we have in the house. A MacBook Pro, a MacBook, and an old G4. The Firewire 800 to 400 connection was invaluable for backing up the G4 quickly and easily. I partitioned the drive to have an equal size partition for each hard drive on the machines and still have 500GB left! The drive is *really* quiet and looks great next to my MacBook Pro. The lighting scheme on the drive also looks great no matter if its sitting idle or actively transfering/accessing.
My only complaint is that the Firewire connection feels really flimsy on the back of the drive. It still works fine, but it doesn't have the same solid feel when it's in that the laptops and G4 have. That's the only thing keeping me from rating this as 5 stars. I'd rate it 4.5 if I could.
Overall really great value for the price!

Comments about Western Digital 1TB My Book Studio Edition Quad Interface External Hard Drive:
As a video producer, I need reliable external hard drives and have always been happy with the Western Digital Products. With each one I've purchased, I've seen a slight improvement, including this one which has a smaller wall plug, as well as new metal components on the 800 firewire connectors. So far I haven't had any problems with it.

This is a fast HD with firewire. Can access info quickly, but it seems to lose my other external hd when I plugged it in, weird. Also smaller than my 500gb hd. overall would reccommend it.

This external hard drive is very hard to beat for the price. It's extremely fast, quiet and the four interface types means that you can use it in any computer system. It's just perfect if you need a huge store media, in my case I use as a backup storage for my photos.
