I just recently switch from PC platform to Mac. I purchased a MacBook Pro (15"). Needed a portable hard drive to store my images. Since the MacBook Pro had a FireWire 800 port I went with the LaCie Portable Hard Drive. Now if your system only has a port for USB or FireWire 400 no problem. The LaCie supports all of them and comes with the cables. There was no setup as I just plugged in the LaCie to the FireWire 800 port and the Mac found it. It is very fast with the FireWire 800. Great if you want to use the Mac Time Machine for backing up your hard drive.
The rubberized bumper is a great feature in case you happen to drop it.
I plan to purchase another one soon just for backing up using the Mac Time Machine.

When connected via FW - works fine as an external drive if there is nothing else on the FireWire bus AND if you supply additional power via provided USB cable.
Can freeze computer if you don't connect extra USB-power cable, so beware if you think it can take enough power from FireWire socket.
When connected via USB - works fine, though slower (and unsuitable for video capture).
Blocks completely video capture if both camcorder and this disk are connected.
Summary: OK as an external portable data drive, not OK as a drive for video work.
Low rating is because (a) the disk did not perform at what I bought it for - video capture, (b) despite the advertisement it had to occupy one USB port regardless of whether I connect it to USB or FireWire, (c) LaCie hasn't given me great technical support so far.

Comments about LaCie 250GB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
Two weeks after the Haiti earthquake I retrieved my Lacie drive from my tent on the roof of a compound I was staying at outside Port Au Prince. The drive contained footage from four days of shooting.
Rushing back to my edit station, the drive slipped from my hands and dropped two stories down to a stone walkway below.
Not only did the drive survive, it worked perfectly. Since then I have shipped that drive to two different clients so they could use the footage to tell stories about the relief efforts!

I had my harddrive for less than a year and it just quit working. It had been babied. I work as a guide and come in contact with hundreds of photographers a year and began asking around, there were a lot of people who quit using them for this very reason. One photographer had 3 fail in one year and Lacie made the generous offer of recovering his photos for $5000. Use anything else.

I bought LaCie 250 GB Hard Drive for my Mac Lap top. I want to keep all of vacation photo and movies on the the portable hard drive and then down load them by fire wire or usb to my main computer at home. It has been fast easy and best of all, it did not slow down or eat up my laptops memory. I shoot in raw and downloading 6-8 GB is not hard to do with the newer cameras out on the market. Great buy and if I had to do it again I would. Remember quality is not cheap and it is cheaper to do it right the first time.

Comments about LaCie 250GB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
I upgraded my laptop's internal drive to 250GB so I got this little inexpensive drive to use as a bootable clone/backup drive. I love the "rugged" rubber around the edges so I feel safe with storing it my drawer. And the fact that it gets its power from the USB bus is awesome so there's no digging out power cords every time I back up. I just rubber band the USB cable to the drive. Drives are always getting cheaper and smaller and increasing in capacity so I'm sure in a year this little drive will be no big deal. But right now for the price, I'm very impressed that this little guy is so inexpensive for 250GB.

Comments about LaCie 250GB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
I bought this drive to dump full cards from a Lexar FireWire 800 reader instead of on my MacBook Pro while I am on location. It is a very fast drive. In my experiments it transfers best directly from the CF reader to the drive. Having all of the possible connections USB2, FW400, FW800 makes this drive very versatile in case you need to transfer to a machine that doesn't have FW800.
This is probably the best portable drive to carry as an on location backup.
Highly recommended.

I got this hard drive as an undergraduate student and kept everything from papers to my itunes library on it. Now, as a graduate student, it is even better to keep all my research and paper files on as well as my larger Final Cut Pro and film files. I can bring it with me everywhere without worrying about crushing it.
It was well worth the money and has lived up to its name. I definitely recommend it.

Comments about LaCie 250GB Rugged Triple Interface Portable Hard Drive:
I'm a technician that uses this drive to carry installers and also backup data. It's quick, very portable and silent, and the price is fair. I've had an older lacie portable drive that got lugged around the globe and never failed.
It only has one firewire 400 port unlike the other drives, so you can't daisy chain without using another interface. Will not bus power on a PC, but will on a Mac.

I use it for audio work and occasional backups.
One of the best parts about this drive is the number of protocols it comes with (usb, firewire 400 and 800) Its an awesome drive well worth the money. I would highly recommend LaCie over any other brand.
Its quite possibly the best external drive i've got!

I bought two of these to offload p2 material in the field and found that they're great in the edit suite. We've been using ours to transport files between workstations. Being bus powered is a big! plus. They feel solid and are perfect for field use.
