This is a Photogenic RTT Radio Slave Transmitter, dedicated to firing the StudioMax III "R" and "BR" Series monolights without a sync cord between your camera and the unit. It has one channel, and runs off the included long-lasting 12V battery.

At first I was shocked when I pulled the RTT Radio Transmitter out of the box, because it looked like it came right out of a cracker-Jack box. This thing is made from toy-grade plastic to say the least, but the good thing is, it doesn't add any extra weight to your camera which is good. So far I have only tried it at a range of about 40 feet max and it seems to work. Photogenic claims an 80 foot range though. The battery does last a long time since I haven't had to change it yet and it's been at least 6 months. My unit did not come with any instructions, but you can download the instructions from the Photogenic website.

This little gadget is a must have for the Photogenic StudioMax III I purchased. However, having to buy it separately was annoying and drove the cost of the purchase perilously close to "too expensive". I also don't like that it will only work with Photogenic gear.
It feels and looks CHEAP - for over $60 it would be nice to make it feel like it was higher quality than a happy-meal toy.
Worse, I and my assistant nearly destroyed it trying to install the battery. We used butter knives, screw drivers, finger nails etc. because there were NO directions besides, "Install the battery." My assistant got online and read message boards where others complained of the same problem. You can stare it down, but if you do not know that the screw that opens the housing is UNDER a tiny sticker, you'll never get it open.
The good news - it worked as advertised and made my shoot that weekend go very well, and without a cord.

I use this with my StudioMax III lights. I had no issues with the transmitter at all, but had issues trying to figure out how to install the battery, considering a sticker, which looked semi-important enough to leave alone, was covering the screw that I needed to open the unit. Once I found it, smooth sailing from there. It has helped tremendously with my lights. Easy to use and is quite a bit cheaper than other radio transmitters, considering the receivers are built into the lights.
