With the Canon WP-DC21 waterproof case for the PowerShot G9, you can use your PowerShot G9 digital camera to take underwater shots at depths of up to 130' (40 m). Of course it's also ideal for taking worry-free pictures in the rain, at the beach, or on the ski slopes.
You can use your camera's internal flash for lighting purposes. Or, use the internal flash to trigger a slaved external strobe like those made by Fantasea, Sea & Sea, Ikelite, Sunpak or Sealife. The camera has an underwater white balance setting for available light photography.

I purchased this housing for extreme weather (hurricanes/storms)and wet environments (Niagara Falls). The product is solid and simple to use. Other options included an Ikelite for my 20D at $1200+. For about half that, I got my first PnS w/ an UW housing! The Kata products are great for rain, but not for salty mist at an ocean beach. Super price for a waterproof solution.

I'm a bit torn about how to review this housing. It succeeds in its basic function (keeping the camera dry underwater) fairly well, but as a tool for true underwater photography, it falls far short.
First, the good:
it keeps the camera dry, at least as long as you take care of the O ring.
You also get controls to most of the cameras functions.
The not-so-good:
single o-ring design. Unlike more robust underwater housings, this one uses a single o-ring. even with the most meticulous care sand and silt will get into the o-ring, and with this design it only takes one point of failure to ruin your G9
No hot-shoe: underwater photography needs strobes, and sadly this housing has no hot shoe. The internal flash can be used to trigger a slave, but that's it. You are also limited on how a strobe will attach to the housing.
no wide-angle lenses available: you're stuck with what the G9 gives you... which thankfully is a decent lens to begin with...
bottom line: if you are looking for a way of taking your camera underwater on your tropical vacation to shoot a couple of snap-shots, this housing might be perfect for you.
But if you fancy yourself an up-and-coming underwater photo-hobbiest, then this housing will very quickly show its limitations.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
Having used the Canon G9 for some time I thought I would purchase the WP-DC21 for diving, mostly around the UK and the Red Sea.
Its not the smallest of housings, but the G9 is not the smallest of cameras. An optional weight is essential. So if you purchase this, get the weight at the same time.
The housing comes with a front flash diffuser, which is a must, as without it the flash will cut the scenes in half as the camera flash is set back along the lens port.
I like the G9 shortcut button so you can easily select the white balance without going through the menu.
The select wheel is not connected, but this makes no difference to the operation, as you can use the housing buttons for all controls.
I'm sure these comments apply to the G10 and G11 as well.
Having used a Canon housing for my Canon S70 for years, I am sure the Canon G9 housing will be just as good in the years to come.

This WC is easy to use and well-built. The ON/OFF,telephoto,power button, and ISO knob work easily. Other function keys need to be memorized or settings need to be preset before closing the case b/c reading the back of the case is nearly impossible.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
Bought this for my G9 just before a trip to the Galapagos Islands, where I did a lot of snorkeling. Overall performance was very good to excellent and I was extremely happy with its performance. Some points I noted:
- front faceplate slightly recessed, reducing chance of scratching.
- Button labels, clear plastic in relief, were easier to read than I expected underwater.
- As I snorkeled, depth was only to about 20 feet but absolutely no leaks using minimal silicone grease on gasket.
- Must use LCD screen to frame image.
- You cannot use the rotating ring function on the G9 (as complained about in other posts) but it is unecessary, as the left and right buttons scroll you through the same options.
- I found setting the shortcut button on the G9 to white balance adjustment helpful, so I could quickly switch from the underwater setting to auto white balance for shooting under and above water shots, respectively.
- It could be hard to tell when the shutter was half pressed for focusing lock..you have to look for the blinking light by the viewfinder as you can't hear the audio beep.
- The ergonomics are excellent, although I found myself pressing the zoom toggle instead of the clearly distinct yellow-colored shutter button at first.
- It adds some bulk, making your pocket camera the size of a DSLR.
- It floats without a optionally available weight, but this was never a nuisance or bother with the wrist strap.

The case tested without problems. We dove to 120 ft. and the camera came out dry. The camera preformed fine with the controls.

Rated to 130 feet and I went below that, not exactly on purpose, with no harm to the camera. Took very nice video of moving sharks in French Polynesia. Color correction is not great but Iunderstand limitations of not having external lights.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
I've used this housing for both snorkeling and diving and it has taken very nice photos compared to a previous Canon Elph camera housing (yes, the camera makes the biggest difference). No noticable difference at depths to 80ft
I haven't used with an external flash yet, so obviously flash photography is extremely limited. The controls are easy to use and all buttons are very accessible. One thing that is better than my previous Canon case - the viewfinder is closer to the back of the housing which makes it easier to see.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
Case was easy to use and did its job well. The only thing keeping it from getting 5 stars was the inability to use the back wheel while in the case - so if you put the camera into scene mode, picked underwater mode, then closed up the case, shot some underwater shots, then wanted some beach shots as you got out of the water, you would either have to open the case to change the scene mode (possibly dripping water in the process), or just leave the color tones to be off and post-process the photos. Not that big a deal for me since I am used to shooting raw on my SLR and post-processing my work, but might be a bit obnoxious for the casual photographer.
Downside to the G9 was that its LCD was not really bright enough underwater, so I had to guess on the shots. Not the fault of the case at all, just a warning to those with the G9 looking to take it snorkeling or diving.
Also a word of warning - the positive bouyancy is a great way to make sure you don't drop the camera onto the sea floor, but it makes it really rather hard to swim with while strapped to your wrist in rough water. I would recommend attaching it to your belt once you are done and are heading in to shore.

Perfect device to protect my G9 while kayaking. It's actually made for scuba divers and therefore overkill for kayaking. But, on the other hand, at least I know that the camera will be protected. Much better protection then those waterproof bags and with dedicated easy to use buttons.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
I bought this case for my G9 in preparation for a snorkeling trip to Panama so that I could take some underwater shots. It performed spectacularly, allowing me to take my camera with me carefree not only while diving, but also through waterfalls, rough seas, and throngs of local children :)
The case is rugged, easy to use, and allows ALMOST all of the features to be changed on the fly - the only function that isn't available that I missed is the toggle button spin thingy, so if you want the scene mode to be on the underwater setting, you have to preprogram it prior to putting it in the case. I'd also recommend getting some color-changing moisture absorbers to put in the case while using it (there is a perfect space over the hotshoe). This prevents condensation on the inside for guaranteed clear shots.

Although I haven't had the case underwater yet I'm very pleased with what I've seen so far. Able to access any control I think I'd need for taking pics underwater. Seems to be be well made. Just need to get it wet now but I have no doubts it will work well.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
This is the first underwater housing I've used so I don't have a lot of experience in this field. However, I've used a lot of U/W cameras. The SP-DC21 case for the G9 worked flawlessly on my recent trip to Maui. I used it in the ocean every day for two weeks. I also used it in swimming pools, tide pools, skim boarding, boogie boarding and for general shots on the beach. It is a durable case and all the buttons/dials are accessible.
I was able to quickly switch between Aperture Priority mode for still photos as well as Video mode for some quick video clips.
The only downside to the system is that the G9 isn't a super fast camera. There were many times that I wanted to take bursts of images, but the G9 just wouldn't keep up. However, given the alternative of buying U/W housings for my professional dSLRs, this was a happy and inexpensive compromise.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
Agree with many of the Pros already listed: Strong construction, Easily loaded equipment, Seals easily, Lightweight, Comfortable/ergonomic design. Simple to open, easy to use on land in wet environments (boat, salt spray at shore). Simple to clean/inspect seal areas once o-ring was removed. Easy to use buttons, only had to look up one thing in the manual which was how to rotate the dial underwater (the shortcut button opened up another new world :-) ).Used this on at least 6 daytime and 4 dusk/night dives from 6 feet to 65 feet depth using the Underwater setting on the G9. Daytime shots even at shallow depths works best with an external flash to bring out the colors - I used a Nikonos 105 that I already had, set on Slave to go off with the internal flash/diffuser. I was blown away with the quality of nighttime shots - I wasn't expecting much with just the internal flash, but it was great. Again, better with the slave flash but quite good regardless.[...]It didn't take much to get used to this camera while diving and I didn't feel the need to have the camera weighted. This system is not for the perfectionist photographer but is really nice for me. I've used various Sea&Sea units in the past and I'm so over the days of lugging around my Nikonos V and all the gear and film and didn't want to invest in an u/w digital camera.Cons: Kit should come with an o-ring tool to safely remove o-ring for regreasing.Best Uses: Underwater photography, snorkeling, wet/damp environments on land.

good underwater housing. well built and easy to use. only gripe is that there's no way to turn the main control dial on the back of the camera once the case is closed, making it very difficult to shoot Av or Tv mode for me.
otherwise, i would highly recommend the case.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
My husband and I recently went on a trip to Hawaii and I was tired of using disposable underwater cameras and getting so-so pictures when snorkeling. I decided to bite the bullet and purchase this case for my G9. What a great decision. My pictures were crystal clear and I could use all the functions of my camera. It took a few minutes to get the hang of floating and being able to hold camera staedy, focus, zoom and follow fish but wow what great results. Absolutely no leaks or problems. Highly recommend. B&H also great. They got it to me in time as it was a last minute purchase.

Comments about Canon WP-DC21 Case for G9:
Bought this case to go snorkeling with.. works perfectly with the G9. Easy to load/unload the camera, easy to see the screen, can use (almost) all the functions of the camera through the case. A few things to note (why i didn't give it 5 stars):
1) a little bulky, but expected for an underwater housing
2) need to use the included diffuser for the flash to avoid a shadow
3) cannot use the dial on the back of the camera while in the case
4) difficult to push the shutter button halfway
Even so, I would still buy it again. Very pleased

This was my first case for UW photography. It worked very well and for a beginner I got some good photographs.
Make sure to get the case weights and the moisture munchers for the best results.
The only problem I had was with some glare when viewing the shots underwater. There is no direct connection for an external strobe.
*** A good case for beginning to intermediate UW photographers.

I have a boat and live in Rio de Janeiro, great buy for a low price. I'm not a profissional underwater fotografer but, now I can take pictures at the beach, rain or boat, and nothing happens with my small great G9. When it's not raining I got my EOS 30D and I'm mortal again.

the canon housing looks real nice and has all the functions available for the g9, but mine leaked from the front were the screws are on the second time i used it, and i only had it 2' underwater. thank god because i was able to get my camera out quickly enough not to damage it, but had i been on a dive, im sure i'd be out $300 for my camera
