Unlike conventional printers with a single print head, the iPF5100 uses two high-precision, high density print heads with a total of 30,720 nozzles. By intelligently processing print data and directing the high precision, high-density print heads, the system ensures image clarity and color accuracy, even for complex graphics and color-rich photographic images. Combined with Canon's dual print head design and the most ink nozzles per color in the industry, the L-COA controller helps achieve phenomenal print speeds.
- Built-in Calibration
- The iPF5100 printer is equipped with the ability to recalibrate itself to the original optimal factory settings and apply any necessary adjustments. This creates a more stable, predictable printing platform on which superior results can be consistently achieved. The system has built-in calibration sensors that accurately detect variation in print heads and measures the density levels of the inks and makes necessary adjustments to return calibration to the original factory settings.
- Multiple Media Options
- The iPF5100 printer offers four media feed options; a front-loading cassette for pre-cut sheet, a rear manual feed, a front straight path manual feed for thicker media up to 1.5mm, and a roll feed for longer paper lengths, and borderless prints. The device features automatic media switching between the cassette and the roll feed so users can keep two media types loaded and ready to print, making their selection from the print driver. The roll feed comes with two and three-inch core adapters to accommodate all 17-inch Canon roll-stock media. The printer also comes standard with a built-in rotary media cutter, and can utilize both its rotary cutter and the optional roll feed unit to produce breathtaking borderless (edge-to-edge) prints in minutes.
- Print Plug-in for Adobe Photoshop and Digital Photo Professional
- The included export modules allow users to directly process and print RAW image files from DPP or Adobe Photoshop, and bypasses the operating systems dependent print driver, thereby allowing processing of 16-bit RGB images directly, which dramatically increases gradations and as a result, overall image quality. - Printer Driver 2007
- The imagePROGRAF printer driver works with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems offering exceptional, high quality prints through easy usability and accurate color. The printer driver incorporates existing imagePROGRAF features along with, updated easy to use functions. The monochrome photo mode produces neutral, high quality monochrome images with the primary use of the Black, Gray and Photo Gray inks, and helps to ensure minimal shifts in color that are commonly caused by the use of color inks in black and white prints. Another easy to use feature is the free layout feature, which allows for custom nesting of separate images and documents.
- Digital Photo Front-Access Utility
- The Digital Photo Front-Access has been developed by Canon as a utility to import images from a camera, memory card, USB, etc and incorporate them into software applications such as PosterArtist and Photoshop. It provides auto image retouching, the ability to open in PosterArtist and Photoshop files with support for JPEG and RAW images, and simple configuration of print settings by means of the printer driver

I am a professional photographer and I use Canon Satin 240 or 190 in my IPF5100 or Lexjet media. I shoot youth sports and only print the 5x7 team photos and 8x10 team photos on the Canon Printer. We are seasonal in our work. We shoot baseball in the spring then the printer has limited duty until August when football kicks in. I leave the printer on as it keeps the nozzles clean even if they are not being used. I replaced the first set of heads (2)in the printer while still under warranty (1 year) now I am getting a print head error again less than 2 years after the initial replacement. Remember, this is with LIMITED duty. The print heads run $550.00 EACH. I have ink tanks that haven't run out in the amount of time it takes for the heads to wear out. This is NOT what I would consider to be a professional printer. I have NEVER replaced my Epson 7600 print heads and have printed 1000s of posters from 2003 - 2011.
The Canon is fast. The prints are top rate. But for the cost, I will be dumping mine ASAP.

So far, I used this printer to print my pictures on canvas for different projects. This Canon printer again confirm the reputation of Canon products. It does excellent job if you print 16-bit image. Did not try printing JPG-image, but I ampretty sure it will do the best. Set up was a breath - no problem what so ever. I am using it with Photoshop CS3, did not find any glitches. I would really recommend this printer if you are a pro or semi-pro with nice budget in your pocket. I did not find any cons so far. I don't know ink consumption yet - stil on the first roll.

Let me start by saying that the print quality on this thing is incredible. I'm using it with Red River Papers and their custom profiles and the results are everything I expected.[...]Also, being a photographic printer I expected some of the standard paper sizes to be included in the software. Be prepared to have to create a custom size for 11x14 and other common photo sizes. I tried to call tech support and see if there was some sort of download for this sort of thing and also to ask if I could do full bleed at this size. Wound up hanging up after 20 minutes of someone reading a base level manual to me over the phone. The guys at Red River Paper directed me to an online user group that was much more helpful, but I would hate to think of having a serious issue and trying to resolve it with Canon tech support.Overall this is an amazing piece of equipment, but if you need to print a lot of 8x10 and under be prepared to do a lot of trimming or purchase another piece of equipment to handle that portion of your workflow.

i'm a giclee artist. although that reads as "creative but not terribly adept with machines," set-up and installation was relatively pain-free; and when the computer and printer got talking, pushing out work product came naturally. though i still have to tweak colors and worry about the high cost of lucia inks, from a technical perspective the prints i'm now producing in-house are finer than anything i've seen from my outside printers.

I was a total Epson user and read reviews before deciding to get this printer. The color mgnt. is excellent and the prints are perfect. The roll paper is easy to use. Not so hot--- Needs a hard copy of the Printer Manual. I do not have my printer connected to the internet.
