I currently own two DiscPainters, one at home and one at work. I have thoroughly enjoyed using the DiscPainter and have created many truly amazing DVD labels with it (self pat on back). For years I was forced to deal with markers, lame stickers, and document printers disguised as disc printers. All of those disc labeling methods had major, major, limitations, involved too many problems, and too often offered poor results. The DiscPainter is truly a step beyond those frustrating labeling systems.
The DiscPainter works so well because it was designed and engineered from scratch to be a disc labeler. It is not an after thought like the other so called disc labelers out there. Out of the several hundred discs I have labeled, fewer than ten became drink coasters. All of my failed labels were the result of user error (me) and not as a result of a DiscPainter malfunction. It is definitely a high quality, well built product.
The reason I am so positive about the DiscPainter is because of the ease in which it allows me to design extremely creative labels. It comes with a collage tool that allows up to 15 or so photos to be merged quickly, resulting in a very professional looking label. Likewise the text tools are simple to use and produce very eye catching results. Changing fonts, text color or text size are equally fast and intuitive.
Printing speed is fast, only 1 minute for 600 dpi labels and 3 minutes for 1200 dpi labels. All printing settings are fully adjustable. The default settings will work well for most people but if needed it's nice to be able to tweak some things.
I use the DiscPainter to make professional disc labels for my videography business but I can certainly see how it would make a great addition to any photographer or musician that likewise needs superior quality labels for their discs.

How quickly the mighty fall.Let's face it, there aren't too many reasonable solutions available to those of us who want a decent looking label on our discs. I've used the expensive auto-loading systems that make 4 discs at a time and drop them in to printers made by Epson and Lexmark at work, and as expensive as they are, they are also prone to continual minor issues that require constant oversight and cleanup, not to mention a lot of ink. That seems to come with the territory, and the results are pretty much the same overall. I've been eyeballing the DYMO DiscPainter for a year, waiting for the price and availability to stabilize and the inevitable new product bugs to be addressed, because I'm a cautious buyer. I had to jump when I saw it on sale at B&H for a very fair price, and really looked forward to using it immediately on a project at home. I freelance doing photography and video editing, so it had an immediate appeal, to help produce an effective way of personalizing my final products in CD and DVD form. We all know, or should know that we will never get the kind of quality print job you're used to from retailers. It just isn't the kind of thing you could normally afford, so you have to lower your expectations to begin with. I'm sure that people familiar with the usual print issue of faint lines appearing along the horizontal print area are the predominant quality issue on the usual machines, and this issue seems to be fairly common, but there is a certain improvement in the circular print pattern the DiscPainter produces, where those overlaps in the print lines seem less offensive. Again, you can't expect perfection. Even so, I expect the basics; Two Simple Things I consider essential for any PC related purchase. First, I expect it to work out of the box. Second, I expect it to effectively update itself in a reasonable fashion during the installation process, so it can function as well as possible after setup is complete.Unfortunately, in my case, the DYMO DiscPainter failed completely in both respects. Details follow. It set up reasonably quickly, and instructions were clear and to the point. There are no issues in the Instructions department. The software loaded easily also, and the interface is intuitive and easy to use. A breeze, really. It's refreshing not to have to be concerned with disc alignment issues that I've had with the previously mentioned systems. This is where the DYMO stands out, because it's methodology of printing in a circular pattern allows for an excellently centered print area. The system seemed to work well enough in my first test print, but the image I printed seemed weak, due to a lack of ink, and I decided I'd better increase the color depth by 10% and also bump up from the "Standard Quality" to a "High Quality" resolution setting. That's when the product failed dramatically. After accepting the disc, it appeared to be printing, and the task bar showed it as being "5% Complete", but it stayed that way for 35 minutes, just spinning and doing nothing. I had to remove the cables and power to get it to stop, and then it finally re-set the tray position so the disc could be removed, and I discovered that the unit had dumped a considerable amount of ink, from the center hole of the disc, that ran all the way to the edge, as though it had dumped the ink instead of spraying it, and there was a fine mess to clean up in the tray area. The ink ran from the hub, an area that was not included in my label art, so this was definitely a bad sign. After cleaning up the mess, rechecking the alignment of the ink cart, and disposing the destroyed disc, I accessed the DYMO web site and encountered an available software update that also required a firmware update for it to work. Since I use Vista Pro 32, I figured the global nature of the offered updates might address my performance issues, so I went through the lengthy process of downloading the almost 500Mb worth of software they updated, and then downloaded the firmware zip file and learned how to apply it to the DiscPainter. In the process, I found out that Windows refused to open the zip file. I got a Windows Warning that says "dfuu MFC Application has stopped working - A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." It was impossible to update the firmware, and without the firmware update, it could not use the updated software.I filed 2 complaints with DYMO, one to Customer Service and another to Tech Support. CS offered to replace the unit, and TS offered some fundamental advise. They suggested I be sure to clear the Print Que. Since nothing had loaded successfully, and therefore there was no print job involved, the advise was pointless. That was followed by TS offering a direct link to another firmware update zip file I could access at their on site support response area. That offering failed in the exact same fashion, with the same Windows Error response, again. This seems to have stumped them completely, and as of 2 weeks ago, they claim to be working on it, and promise to contact me as soon as they have a solution. They haven't and the unit is still dead in the water. That is a big problem, as far as support is concerned.CS has a better idea. Since the unit itself seems to be dysfunctional, they not only offered to replace it, and arrange for return shipment of the original unit, but they also agreed to install the firmware update themselves before they ship the replacement. It's been 2 weeks, and it hasn't arrived, and they have not provided any form of shipment notification, or any form of projected date when any of this might occur. This may solve the problems, but I have no way of knowing at this time. Unfortunately, it also creates another problem buyers should be aware of.I[...] I have no reason not to believe that my problems could be unique, even though the unit has had some time in the marketplace to refine it's use and address existing issues. [...] it all boils down to DYMO getting their act together in the time remaining. I hope for all concerned that they solve this expediently. We expect to get what we pay for.Therefor, under these circumstances, I am inclined to give this product 2 stars. No, it doesn't work at all, but there is a hope that the positive response and concern by all parties will pay off soon, otherwise I'll have no option but to give it the boot, because it's essentially useless.

For years I've wanted to put labels on my music CDs. Now I can with DiscPainter! No longer do I need to label with a marker. No more of those stick-on labels that get stuck in my car stereo. I have professional labels. This is just the product for me. And no high price... it is quite afforsable. Thanks for a great product.

If you only have several dozen copies to make a month this is the printer for you! Any more than that and you'll be buying this same product several times because it's not made for the long haul. I've bought 3 so far and replaced each one after about 9 months or so. The warranty doesn't start over with the replacement printer. I took one apart that failed and the drive belt that stretched is super thin. If you need industrial strength don't buy this but for the price it's a steal!

Comments about Dymo DiscPainter CD/DVD Printer:
I am a professional photographer and I bought this for giving the clients slideshows and image files on DVD. I had problems with it right out of the box.
It has terrible print quality, the worst banding that I have ever seen. I called the company twice while it was still under warranty, and both times they sent me new ink and said it was the ink cartridge. I only print a couple discs a month on it, so I didn't get a chance to use it enough to test that theory.
I finally had the last straw...I ordered one more ink cartridge, and this banding is the worst yet. I am getting rid of it. It makes me look bad as a professional, because I am NOT giving professional quality when I use this product.
I would have given this a 0 star rating if I could have.

So far it seems to be just what we need for our start up business.
The only thing I've had to get used to is saving everything every couple of breaths because it won't save automatically. The tech support is great which I really appreciate.

This is perfect. You design the label, print as many as you need, save the design, unplug the unit and store it in a draw. Next time just take it out, plug it in, open one of the label's you saved and print out the number of copies you want. It is so compact and, very quiet. All the fonts, colors and sizes you could ever want. Perfect for small buisness or where you just need a few copies at a time.

I used the DiscPainter on several DVDs so far and it works great. It's fast and prints nice images on the discs. I would recommend this to anyone who needs a disc printer unless you have a tremendous amount of discs to print.

Comments about Dymo DiscPainter CD/DVD Printer:
Not as advertised. Print quality is quite bad and slow. The ink does not last a week before drying up and messing up your prints 8 times out of 10.
My unit finally blew up after a year. The printing head melted on the disc for an unknown reason and now it's going to the trash.
Of course, I won't have it repaired. But I'm quite happy, because I don't have a choice but to buy something else. All after a lot of wasted money on extra ink cartridges and wasted time printing bad DVD's and cleaning the printing head.
Yes it is small, but it definitely does not do the job. Stay away and buy something else.

I am currently working on a project involving many copies of various DVD that I have prepared over the years. These a personal and go back over 50 years of 8mm to present day. 14 to 20 people will each receive their copies for Xmas. Had a little trouble until I called for help and found that it needed to be connect directly to a USB port on my iMac.
Not disappointed with software. Ink is a little more difficult to get. But that is a minor problem.
Using DVD cases to round out and produce a professional quality gifts for friends and relatives.
The design fits well within the silver color of my systems. It is compact and has one purpose. Small piece of equipment that requires little space.
Take care on buy DVD that are printable. First purchase was Sony silver and they could not absorb ink. AFter 24 hours they still had not dried.
Tried the same with HP and after 2 months could not produce a DVD label.

This is my second DYMO Discpainter and I have been satisfied with the printing it has done. I use it for more text based printing, but when I have printed images they have come out nicely. If you are looking to not spend a crazy amount of money on an ink jet printer, this is the one for you.
