I have gotten sick and tired of the constant problems with my Kodak ink-jet printer and decided to try a color laser. Although it is not advertised as a photo printer I am very impressed with the quality of the prints and cannot see any difference between it and the previous Kodak or Epson photo quality printers I have owned. All printing is very fast and duplex printing cuts paper costs when printing text. I am not using the network feature so cannot comment on that but setup to Windows Vista Home premium went very smoothly using USB. Remember, I have only had this printer for a short period of time but am pleased with the performance so far. Be aware it is a large printer and it will require a lot of landscape. The upside to the size, research has shown, is you will end up with lower cost per print because of larger and cheaper cartridges.

For a busy household with need to crank out a mix of text and graphics we were most impressed by its speed, reasonable cost per page and excellent color output on stock paper. Setup is reasonable for the non technophiles and it became a trusted member of our network in no time flat. It is huge and heavy and needs some space and support. First impression is very postive with the hefty B&H discount making this a winner for us.

This is my second identical printer. The first one printed around 28,000 sheets before it started wearing out a bit. I started having problems with the duplicator (printing both sides) and one of the toner cartridges started bleeding. That could have been an age of machine issue or an isolated cartridge issue. If you are patient you can find this printer in the $250 price range. I paid [$] because I needed it then. All in all, a workhorse for under $400. BTW,[@] has toner that is about 30% cheaper than most other places I have found. I use only 24 lb. 8.5 x 11 Xerox multi purpose paper from [@]. Apparently Brother recommends 24 lb. multi-purpose. I would have given it five stars but I started having issues after less than 1.5 years.Oh, did I mention that Brother has great customer service? I run on a Mac network and they always are able to answer my questions. Note that I have Macs so I don't have many issues once the equipment is installed. Another thought on the network: I have the printer installed with a static IP address with more success than its default settings. Sorry about the scattered array of thoughts. Buy this printer. It is good.

No real complaints -- I just reserve the five stars for the masterpieces. After years of using inkjet printers, it's refreshing to have the great speed of a laser. I use inkjet for photography and this Brother printer for all large text documents. After about month of use, no problems at all. Works fine with my Mac OS X computer. It is heavy and is a little large to share your desktop.

It is quiet and handles duplex operation just as competently and smoothly as the much more expensive printer at my workplace. It does not do photo quality prints, but absolutely no color laser printer does. It does do excellent color brochures, etc. The first print is slower than repeat prints, but a wake-up and warm-up is involved. It is no problem allowing a little extra time for the first print of a series.

We use the printer to fill in for small jobs that require flexibility, that aren't economical or timely to send to a commercial printer. The printer took some playing around with to get the color just right, but the higher resolution we print the truer the colors seem to be. Even from 300dpi to 600dpi made quite a difference. The laser is easy to run straight out of the box - MUCH easier than the HP 2550 color laser we have. The first print doesn't take very long to get going.
The only drawback, which seems to be the case with the HP 2550 as well, is that if you want to print on #10 envelopes, they always seem to come out creased and look worse for the wear. We've gone back to printing addresses on envelopes with our HP inkjet, which is really fast and leaves the envelopes in good condition.
Other than that the Brother has a pretty small footprint and a great price for some nice quality color printing.

We use this printer for basic black and white documents as well as the occassional presentations. We were looking for a product that was color laser and duplex. The Brother's HL-4040CDN provided that and more. It prints via thumbdrive, rj45 network conntection, and has the most inexpensive toner cartridges.
My dissapointment with this product is the flimsiness of the paper tray as well as the manual feed. Individuals that use highend HP printers will immediately realize the the difference in quality.
Nevertheless, the HL-4040CDN prints quickly and cleanly. This printer is for everyone - Office or home alike.

We chose this Brother color laser printer to replace a 4-year old Lexmark that had bit the dust. It joins three other Brother printers and faxes in our office. The HL-4040CDN takes up the same footprint as the Lexmark but is about half the size, at less than 12" tall. Setup was a breeze and the latest drivers can be downloaded from Brother's website in no time. We had it networked and running about 20 minutes after unboxing.
This printer runs very quietly and we have been quite pleased with the output quality. We are a real estate office and do several flyer mailings a month. The Brother HL-4040CDN has kept up nicely. Recommended for small/medium offices that do a moderate amount of color printing.

We're very pleased with the performance and cost of the Brother 4040. So far it's done everything we asked of it. Much faster than a comparably priced HP. (HP was still $100 more). It is a little noisy, but not bad. I can't compare the noise to other lasers, because this is the first I've owned.
