Good use for limited camera gear

I needed a backpack to accommodate my Canon 1DMkIII camera body and smaller zooms and prime lens: 70-200 f4, 24-105 f4, 200 f2.8, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 lenses plus small ...Read complete review

I needed a backpack to accommodate my Canon 1DMkIII camera body and smaller zooms and prime lens: 70-200 f4, 24-105 f4, 200 f2.8, 85mm 1.8 and 50mm 1.8 lenses plus small accessories and a tripod. Initially, I looked at the Flipside 200 but it was not enough for my gear, particularly, it could not accommodate the 1DMkIII camera body and the 24-105 f4 lens, i.e. not enough depth. Then I research this backpack but was hesitant because I already owned the Flipside 400 AW backpack; use the 400 backpack for my longer lens, i.e. 300 and 400mm lens, because I thought it would be too close in size to justify a similar bag. After visiting a local camera shop, I was able to see the backpack personally and experiment with different gear. I determined that the backpack was sufficient to handle my gear. The bag did not disappoint. However, one thing I noticed is that the tripod (Manfrotto 055xprob) fits nicely but felt a little awkward when compared to the fit on the Flipside 400 AW, but that's because the 300 is a smaller bag than the 400 version. I suspect a smaller tripod would be less awkward.To give an example of what the 300 can accommodate: Configuration 1: 1D3 attached to the 70-200 f4 (less hood), Canon 580 EXII flash, 85 1.8 with hood, 1.4tc and a CPL in the main area and the 50mm 1.8 and the 70-200 hood in the compartment above the camera; memory cards, ID and a bottle of water in the sidepockets and tripod mounted on the back.Configuration 2: 1D3 with 24-105 attached (with hood reversed) with Canon 580 EXII flash, 85mm 1.8, 50 1.8 (below the 1D3 and zoom), camera strap in compartment above camera with 1.4 tc, plus memory cards, ID and bottle water in the sidepockets and the tripod mounted on the back. I have not used the flipside function yet as I tend to have 2 camera bodies with different lenses attached, so no changes on the fly.Overall, the bag is nice and is ideal for my gear. I prefer a backpack as oppose to the slingshot or regular bags because of the weight of my gear; backpack distributes the weight evenly across my back and shoulders and therefore causes less fatigue…for me.I purchased the backpack approximately $20 cheaper at B&H than the local camera shop [...]

Problem I had was it's pretty limited where you can put the dividers. Very small variation from their original position. The pouch at the top is useless for me. Nice that I could remove it, but I couldn't reclaim the space with dividers.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

I do like this bag but there are a few things that I would change. I can store my camera body plus three lenses and accessories and comfortably carry it all around in this bag but the lid of the main compartment can get in the way even when fully unzipped and the interior compartments have limited adjustabilty. It is a well designed bag just needs a little tweeking here and there

    Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

    I cannot imagine a more perfect bag for its category! I took mine to Kenya & Tanzania on a safari, which included roughing it up a little: (1) visiting villages which had cow dung ALL over the place and (2) going through jungle/woods. In it I packed:
    - Canon 5D Mark II body
    - Canon XTI body
    - Canon 35mm f/1.4 L
    - Canon 135mm f/2.0 L
    - Canon 100-400 f/3.5-5.6 L
    - Tripod on the back
    - Water in side pouch
    - Accessories (20 spare batteries, 7 compact flash cards, 3 filters).

    I love this bag! The rear zipper makes it perfect for ensuring nobody steals stuff from your bag while you're wearing it!

      I wanted a backpack that would carry my canon 60D with my 70-200 (w/extender) attached and my tripod/mono. This bag meets that need. It is solid. Great padding. Secure. Not too heavy. Has nice strap to secure the tripod. But I will say it looks like I have a small coffin on my back which I'm not fond of - very boxy. I was going to send it back but my hubby talked me out of it saying I will need it and I will use it on hiking trips.

      Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

      This is the best bag in this price range. Unlike the sling bag, you just have one compartment to deal - extremely spacious and easily configurable. I have a Canon 7D, 15-55/2.8, 70-200/4 both with hood, a couple primes and a 580 speedlite. The pack is very well made and has thick padding. The waistband works as advertised - clip it on and everything in the pack can be fully accessible while it is resting on your stomach. 2 straps are very helpful for the heavier equipment that I am carrying. I would highly recommended this.

            Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

            Overall, this bag is an excellent choice, even if you have a fair amount of equipment. I just spent 3 weeks on vacation, and it performed really well.

            1) Equipment
            I was able to pack the following:
            a) Pentax K10D (upside down) with a 12-24 lense attached;
            b) 3 additional lenses (100-300 zoom, 28-80 zoom, 50mm)...the 100-300 zoom isn't a large lens however;
            c) a JVC camcorder (HD3U);
            d) wide angle lens for the JVC (think 50mm);
            e) a microphone for the JVC;
            f) a 7 inch tablet (Archos 250GB)
            g) 3 camera batteries, plus a few small AAA (JVC camcorder battery is fairly large)
            h) SD cards, lens clothes, and passport wallet

            All of g) and h), save the passport wallet, fit nicely in the upper compartment.

            The above was what I carried on the plane, and I left various bits at the hotel as necessary.

            So, full marks for carrying capacity.

            2) Ergonomics
            My primary requirement was a backpack - I have a single harness sling, and I find it tiring after an hour or 2. The big surprise about the 300 is that it works as a sling very well - this meant I could use both harnesses, or just one. I carried 4-5 hours at a time, and while I needed to transfer it back and forth, overall it carried very well. Also, the top grab handle is great in restaurants/coffee shops.

            As for the "odd opening", I actually like this in many ways. I looked at other bags, and I really preferred the single opening, vs the multiple-zippers/openings/alleyways of other bags. With the 300, you unzip 1 zipper, and all your gear is readily available. Additional ergonomic comments: 1) the bag is fairly stiff, and I regularly held the bag on top of one arm, unzipped, removed/added gear, zipped, and went about my business; 2) Since it was fall, I was wearing a coat with pockets, so I simply took 2 lenses out and left them in the pockets. I might need to buy a belt for summer, but a small price to pay overall.

            What to improve? My only real want would be wider straps - as many have mentioned, this bag can carry a fair amount of gear for such a small package, and wider straps would spread the load a little. As others have mentioned, the small side pocket isn't very useful for anything but memory cards, and considering today's card capacity, there isn't much access needed.

            Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

            In general this is a nice backpack but I do have some concerns but note that I am comparing it to my Mountainsmith Parallax Pro Backback.

            I wanted something smaller to carry one camera with attached lens and two extra lenses. It is just deep enough to have a battery grip attached (5DMKII.) It isn't as comfortable as my other backpack either.

            It is built well. I love that it opens from the back. The compartments are for the most part configureable (that inner top pouch isn't so useful for me and can't easily be made into gear space.) The grip on the top of the bag is convenient.

            I would not use this as my exclusive bag tho.

            I use this bag almost every time I have to travel for a photo shoot. It fits a lot of my gear and thankfully fits my Manfrotto 190XDB tripod nicely (although I added an extra piece on the handle so the head of the tripod was a little more secure).

            The only negative comment I have about this bag is that it's a little stiff at first and def needs to be broken in a little.

            Overall it's a great bag for the traveling photographer. The opening of the bag is to your back so you don't have to look over your shoulder too much to keep an eye on your gear.

              Sturdy construction, comfortable shoulder straps,ease of use make this a great pack! But even with just one camera and lens, one extra lens,flash,cords, etc, I wish I'd gotten the next size up. The inner dimentions given seem like a lot of room, but with the dividers, it isn't as much as you think. The outside pockets(especially the zippered one)aren't very roomy either. It's tough enough to last for years, I just have to be judicious in how I pack it.

              Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

              Is a bag full of surprises! Really safe because the access to the camera is hide and you can only reach it when you take the bag off.
              It feels great at your back because it's padded.
              It's a little bit uncomfortable to put or remove equipment from it because the door doesn't stay open so you have to block it with something or even with the same bag itself.

                Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

                the space is perfect for 3 4 5 lenses and extra important accesories, the flipside option is very hand, looks strong and not easy to break. Maybe a little heavy but nothing to worry about.

                  Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

                  i wanted a pack that could handle the outdoors with the occasional drop or tumble. i also needed enough space to keep passports, wallet, etc. when i travel. this back fits the bill perfectly. it's narrower than most, so you don't feel it as much when hiking, has the perfect amount of room for my camera and two additional lenses plus misc gear. it is also very well padded for the occasional fall.

                  Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Black):

                  I use this bag to carry my D300 + Grip + 28-70, an 80-200, a flash and an extra lens. Everything fits in pretty snuggly. According to the lowerpro website (which I used to pick this bag), the bag should fit a second body with the previously listed lenses which I have a hard time imagining.

                  Pros:
                  Spacious, fits just about all my gear
                  Lots of compartments and ways to customize the bag
                  Comfortable to wear
                  Unzips from the side facing your back, more secure

                  Cons:
                  Don't see how this can fit a second body like the lowerpro website said
                  Must take off bag to remove camera

                    This bag is the perfect size and build quality for traveling with lenses, DSLRs etc... the quality it amazing and I would have expected a camera bag such as this to cost at least 2x-3x more at least. I'm going to order a second one for a B-cam we have as well.

                        Holds everything I currently have. Cannon T1I with kit lens and an extra 250mm lens. I do not know if I like the camera access being on the inside of the backpack.
                        My wife thinks it is too bulky looking though, but who really cares what she thinks.
