I purchased the Flipside 300 for my 2-week trip through Ireland. The back performed as expected. Weatherproof exterior kept the content inside dry; having the access area on my back instead of on the outside of the bag made me feel more secure about being in very crowded places.
The bag can stand on its end without falling over, which was a nice surprise.
The tripod holder works well when wearing the backpack - not so well when you want to stand the backpack on the ground however (the tripod legs extend below the bottom of the bag). This isn't a big deal for me since all of my backpacks have worked this way.
My umbrella fit perfectly in the side mesh pocket. I also kept a small table top tripod in the pocket with the umbrella.
The other external accessory pocket is pretty small. It's designed for memory cards, keys, and other small flat items. A slightly larger pocket would have been more useful to allow users to carry their mp3 player and other accessories.
There's also a pocket inside the bag's flap for carrying additional flat items. I kept a couple lens filters (with cases) in there.
Since the Flipside is much slimmer than my other camera backpacks, holding it in one hand while I remove items from inside was not a problem, even while walking with friends.

I had to visit the Lowepro site to make sure I bought the correct camera backpack. The one I ordered, Flipside 300, touts that it will hold a digital SLR, 300mm 2.8, and other lenses and gear. My Nikon D300 and 300mm 2.8, with lens hood, take up virtually all of the inside space. Maybe I'm supposed to take the camera off the lens. I could wedge some other items inside, but that lens cost me a fortune. The inside dividers will be used for additional padding to protect my lens.
I have other Lowepro gear, and will probably purchase more. However, I'm disappointed with this particular item. I can see using it with my 80-200 2.8, which would allow me to carry another lens or two.
Find a local dealer to see if this works for you, before you purchase it. None of the pro dealers in my area had any when I was shopping around.

Comments about Lowepro Flipside 300 Backpack (Red/Black):
I use this bag on day trips or weekend trips; typically when I won't need to charge batteries.
This bag held the following:
Nikon D300 (lens detached and battery grip detached), Battery Grip, Sigma 50-500mm telephoto lens & hood, 60 mm macro lens and hood, 17-50 mm lens and hood, wireless speedlight, Speedlight flash SB600, macro ring with 2 flashes and 2 filters, 2 lens filters, 1 charged battery, macro snap-on lens, bulb cleaner/blower, memory cards, remote for wireless flash and manfroto tripod.
When I'm going on a longer vacation, I take the Lowepro Vertex 300 AW, which can then hold all of my batteries/charges plus a ton of other items.
Contruction is strong! Couple of places to hang accessories on outter bag. Outter zipper pouch could indeed be deeper; not much fit in here. The pouch on the other-side is good for a water bottle, umbrella (the pocket itself is stretchy) I like the upper handle; it's very sturdy and makes it convenient for grabbing/moving without toppling the whole bag. Stands upright on its own when the tripod is not in it's pouch.
I plan on using this bag while bicycling, in the near future, for easily transporting such a large amount of gear.
I often don't know what lenses I will want when I'm out shooting. So I like to have with the 3 that I own and I'm so pleased that I can fit all my gear in this one, compact bag.

Loaded two bodies, three fixed and one zoom (70-200 F2.8) lens in this bag for trip to and around Alaska. I couldn't be happier, as it fits in overheads(check your carrier though...), and was with me at base camp on Mt. McKinley. Comfortable, low cost, very high quality. I am ordering another as a gift, so highly recommended! It hides the expensive contents well...

I'm using this bag on a trip to the Ukraine. It holds my Nikon D90 with grip, 2 lens, charger. and other small items. It fits well on my back and easy to take off. I like that it zips on the inside next to my back. The red and black makes it easy to see.
I do wish it would zip all the way around so you could get things out easier.

I am going on a trip to Belize in Feb, and wanted to get a backpack compact, safe, yet roomy enough inside to accomodate my camera, telephoto lens, and assorted other things. I also wanted to eliminate the need for a purse. Well, this has it all and the open side fits against my back to deter pick pockets. Great buy!

When I travel abroad with my camera gear inside this backpack, I feel save and comfortable. It has a lot of space, light weight, and the only access is on the back not inside or in front of the bag so, it is thief free :). I could carry Nikon D90, 80-200mm f/2.8, 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6, 50mm f/1.8, 80mm f/1.4 and flash SB-600. And also I love the color.

Comfortable, easy access to my camera and lenses! Holds my Olympus 620 with 70-300mm attached, wide angle, 2 more lens, flash, Olympus Pen, flash and everything else I need for my travels to Machu Picchu & Galapagos!
Zipper is a little hard to open, but makes the seal good. Do wish the side pocket was a little "deeper." Hoping I don't need it to be totally waterproof!
Much more "attractive" on a female than the Sling (which is a great bag, also)!

I used this backpack on a recent trip. The design ensures when you are wearing the pack you don't have items fall out or others borrow your lens. It is well padded and the interior is adjustable. It could be a little larger and come with a waterproof cover. Overall it is a good value and should work well those that are looking for this design.

I bought this bag to carry me Canon1D Mark3 with 300mm 2.8 lens attached and 70-200mm 2.8 lens with it they both fit well although i had to leave the lens cover and hood off the 300mm lens .I bought a accessory neoprene cover for the lens for $15 Prior to this I had to bring my camera bag and the hard case that the 300mm lens came in.This is a much better solution

I liked the look and feel of the backpack, just enought room for 1 large lens like a 70-200mm f/2.8L, smaller lens plus a flash. I found it a little tight, but would work great for a short hike.

Great but small backpack. The design is awesome, as you don't have to lay the backpack on the ground to access your gear, but keep it on your waist which I find very handy. I use it for climbing and it proved extremely useful for that.
It fits my Canon EOS 40D with my big 100-400 mm lens with lens hood reversed and my 16-35 mm lens and accessories which is all I need.
Note that you won't be able to put a lot more than that in.
It would be good if you could fit more personal things in the outside pocket, but there is really only room for memory cards and other little and flat things.

I'm really happy with this backpack. It is comfortable to wear and it's easy to slide off the shoulder straps and slide the bag in front of you for access. At that point it's very handy as a place to set one lens while you mount another. Space is limited. One body plus attached lens and maybe three or four other lenses plus a flash. There is a side pocket that has handy storage for memory cards and small pockets for other items. Inside the main compartment is a removable pouch that is handy for storing extra batteries, filters, etc. There is also a pocket within the back flap that will easily store your camera's owner's manual. I like that the opening is against your back and therefore not accessable to pickpockets. Very well thought out design and sturdily made. Highly recommended.

I use this product to carry my Canon Digital Rebel XT with my 35-70 and my 70-300 lenses, a flash, charger, cables and other accessories. There is a detachable pouch in the top, which I keep there and put my small videocamera in it along with the charger for it. I took it to NYC and wore it all day, very comfortable and really like the zipper area that is against your back so there is no chance of anyone unzipping it as you are walking in crowds. Very well padded. Excellent product.
