Still looking for the perfect bag...this one comes very close. I own a Lowepro Compurover AW and a Tamrac Adventure 9 bag. The Compurover is too heavy and you have to crack it open like an egg to get to the Camera compartment. The Tamrac is the perfect size, but you have to take the bag off and lay it on the ground or your lap to open the camera compartment, otherwise you risk spilling out all of your gear! Not good.
This Fastpack 250 intrigued me because the side access pocket allows access to your camera quickly without taking the backpack off. Guess what? it works. You really can get your camera out quickly while still wearing the bag.
I bought this as strictly a travel bag. I'm a pilot so I needed a medium sized bag that I could fit in the cockpit while carrying my 40D and 3 L lenses. I also need the top compartment of the bag to carry a few snacks, water and other supplies.
Okay here's the breakdown.
Pros:
1. Slim design, fits in cockpit and on top of my roller suitcase with ease. Also fits very nicely in the space underneath your seat in an airliner.
2. Side camera access in a serious advantage. I considered the sling packs, but I like the comfort and security of having a full backpack. The sling packs are uncomfortable after a while and hard to position to get your camera out without twisting up your clothes or coat.
3. It's lightweight and comfortable to wear. Significantly lighter than my other two bags.
4. Not as pricey as my two other backpacks.
5. Side pocket fits a good sized Nalgene water bottle.
6. Medium size and all black color doesn't shout "Camera Bag!" while wearing it.
Cons:
1. No all weather cover flap. A major oversight if you ask me. I took the one off of my Tamrac to use with the Fastpack.
2. No chest strap. I think it needs one.
3. It's almost a little small. I wouldn't go any smaller than this bag because you'll be leaving something home that you'll want later.
4. It needs a side or bottom strap that you can attach a monopod to. I'm thinking of having one sewn on. For now I've attached a carabiner to the top handle and strap on my monopod there.
5. Outside pockets are really worthless. They are sewn in flat and don't have room to expand. You can get a few filters and a flash card wallet in them but that's about it.
Like I said it's not perfect, but I'm giving it four out of five mainly because I like the overall size and design of the bag as well as the convenience of the side access camera pocket.

As in most cases, you often have to give something up to get something else. In the case of the the Fastpack 250, you compromise camera equipment space for daypack space and don't get enough of either. I purchased the Fastpack 250 to be used for carrying camera equipment, some snacks and a light jacket for photo daytrips. While I found the bag to be well made, it lacked the space I wanted to adequately carry the camera equipment I required for photgraphic day trips. Perhaps the Fastpack 350 would have been a better choice, but I preferred to keep the overall size in the realm of what would be accepted as carry-on for a flight. If I were to do it again, I'd forego the daypack and get a mid-sized photo backpack that would carry my Nikon D300, 2-3 lenses, a flash and a tripod. I found the fastpack feature which allows access to the camera from a side pocket without removing the packpack to be novel, but not always practical. In most cases, I just removed the backpack and accessed the camera by unzipping the entire compartment cover. The Fackpack lacks a sternum strap, which would help make the load less likely to shift when traversing rough terrain. Last, but not least, the interior backpack material has a very strong chemical/synthetic odor to it. I tried washing the interior, airing it out and even spraying it with a scented spray. After four weeks of use, the odor is as strong as ever. In conclusion, the Fastpack 250 is certainly better than the bulky shoulder bags I have become accustomed to using over the years, but falls short of what I would consider to be the ideal photographic backpack. Unfortunately, the ideal backpack, if there actually is one, would probably be far more expensive.

Comments about Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):
I rarely use this bag which is a shame since I bought it thinking that it would be my workhorse. It's big, bulky, and the straps just are awkward. I'm not a big guy but it still shouldn't feel like I have a midget on my back pulling me down. The waist strap does add stability and on a few hiking trips it proved durable and stable. It gets the job done but just leaves you wanting more, especially since camera bags are so pricey. This is the second bag I have purchased from Lowepro and most likely the second I will sell/give away to someone else soon. Quick tip, go to a store that carries it and test it out yourself. There isn't one magical bag that accommodates the needs of everyone, maybe this was not meant to be for me.

Comments about Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):
This camera and notebook backpack is well made and very durable, comfortable, and I am pleased with this. Well padded. The belt strap keeps a full bag stable and makes carrying easier.
The outer zipper storage compartments got pretty tightly packed fast when I added a wide angle lens, medium telephoto, flash, and the factory lens hoods. I could use a larger bag, so if you think you will add to your basic camera system, buy the next larger size up front.

Comments about Lowepro Fastpack 250 Backpack (Black):
1. The bag was great for air travel. It is sturdy and fits under the seat so I felt my camera was well protected and I had the top compartment for travel incidentals.
2. It seems well made and in the field (hiking) it stood up well to climbing and falling. The top compartment was plenty of room for lunch and water. I felt my camera was secure.
3. It performed as advertised as far as being pretty easy to get my camera out as needed (side access was easy).
4. It is a bit bulkier/heavier than I had hoped.
5. Worst feature and my main complaint - I have a small frame and the shoulder straps rode on my arms rather than my shoulders. It should be made with a chest strap to improve comfort.

I travelled to Europe last week and needed a bag before I left. I specifically needed a bag that would fit my camera computer lenses and personal travel space. The sales rep found this bag and i am very happy with it. Perfect

I purchased this to accommodate Nikon D90, 50mm lens and a Panasonic PF-1, together with laptop, iPad and other associated paraphernalia on holidays overseas. I'm expecting that it'll replace two bags that I might otherwise have taken. The only thing I regret is not having a tripod carrier but c'est la vie.
I'm very impressed with the carrying capacity of the backpack and it's apparent robustness. I 'm looking forward to using it in earnest.

I love the side entry. This one will hold all of my lenses and flashes. I upgraded from the 100 because it was not big enough. I can use the laptop section for collapsable soft boxes.

I love the number of things I can fit into this bag. All my gadgets, the camera, fruits for a picnic at the park and books to read at the same. I would not recommend for when you are just walking around with a camera, but if you also want to carry other things (like water bottles, a light jacket etc) then its perfect.
The one con, is that I'm scared the camera is going to fall when I open the side pouch to pull it out. It has not happened as yet, there has not even been a scare of that nature, but it seems possible and so I use caution.

This is an excellent backpack. There is plenty of room for my Nikon dslr camera and Nikon 18-200mm lens. There is room enough for another two lenses. The laptop space is more than enough for my 13.3" laptop (my 14" work laptop fit easily. Plenty of pad-protection for everything. There are two problems, one is serious. To carry your camera and laptop without having a sternum strap causes the shoulder straps to lie right on your shoulder blades. This is very uncomfortable. I bought a sternum strap for $6 and the pack is now very comfortable. For [$] Lowepro should have included the strap. Also, there is no provision for a tripod; which is a necessity for any serious photographer. Four stars; no way to even consider a fifth one.

Very capable for my 14" laptop and a D90 with attached 18-105, an extra 35mm, chargers for computer and camera and a few extra items. Still had room left over for some personal items in the top compartment and could have fit more in camera compartment if needed. I'd have gone with the FP200 if it had the computer pocket. Quality as you'd expect from Lowepro...EXCELLENT.

I purchased this camera backpack mainly for travel since it also holds a laptop. It makes going through TSA much more efficient! I was concerned that it may be too large for me since I'm 5'3", but it's design is very comfortable and adjustable to fit perfectly. Even when fully packed and heavy, the fit makes the weight less noticeable. I really like the camera access without having to take it off completely and open up fully. All in all, I am very pleased with this product.

Having been into DSLR photography for a little over a year now, I have manage to collect a little gear. I started out with the Lowepro slingshot 100 AW, but found myself needing a larger bag. The Fastpack 250 is perfect!!
Like my slingshot, the bag is stylish, well made and comfortable to carry. Also it holds all my gear and then some. It is well padded to protect my gear, but is not too bulky. The laptop compartment is big plus too.
In my bag's main compartment I have my Nikon D5000, 35mm prime lens, 18-55mm kit lens, 70-300mm zoom lens, SB600 flash and some room to spare. In the upper compartment I have cables, rocket pocket blower, gopro video cam, sd card case with sd cards, etc. Other compartments hold filters, gopro vid cam accessories and more cables. Everything I could ever need is in one place and still have room for my 13" macbook pro!!

Since most nature shots require quite a bit of hiking the last thing you need is a backpack that is heavy or bulky. The Fastback allows us very quick access to our camera and is light enough to back in everything without killing your back. In fact, you barely notice it at all. There is enough room for the primary SLR, extra lens, and a full Gary Fong Diffuser set. Great pack for the money. Love the side access to the camera. You never have to set your backpack down in the mud again in order to get to your camera.
