I desperately needed a pro-deck and was going to buy one that recorded to MiniDV tape. Since I record long events, I would always be having to stock up on the larger 180min DVcam tapes, which can cost upwards of [$] each. (Sometimes you need tape at the last minute and none are available). The DN-300 not only spares you the hassle of having to monitor your deck to change tapes, but spares you the cost of having to buy tapes at all. Intially, the DN-300 seemed like a costly investment for me. However, the MiniDV tape recorders cost around the same and if you wanted one that recorded HDV video, it would probably cost more than the DN-300. Over time, you'd probably spend lots more in tape stock. This device records both Standard and HDV. It would benefit from having an HDMI output so you could watch your recorded HDV video on a plasma monitor instead of having to use the fireware output to view it on a HD camcorder. I also love the convenience of being able to drag & drop your files rather than having to digitize in real-time.

I bought this drive to simplify what it takes to get high quality/great looking screen captures and synced audio, using a VGA to HD component converter and a mic. It was smooth sailing until I tried to record HDV using HD component. HDV can be recorded but only from the firewire port. Datavideo offers an additional software utility for $100 that converts screen graphics to HD video output using a firewire port. That's fine, if the PC has firewire. Otherwise you're still out of luck and there is no option for Macintosh. Bottom line, the DN-300 does what it was built to do. Menu system works OK but could be improved.

        Comments about Datavideo DN-300 DV/HDV Recorder/Player:

We purchased the DN-300 DV/HDV to capture live video taken from two Sony PZT cameras routed through a Roland V-8 video mixer.

Connecting and using the unit was straight forward and extremely simple. The results were even more impressive.

Great for standard Def. High def specified to work only on firewire input but tech support could not get it to work at any resolution above 480i. I tried high def scalers, different sources, everything.
Ties to PC easy, but again only low def.
          High def just dosen't work
