This dedicated Voigtlander Screw-In 58mm Lens Hood is specifically designed for use with the 58mm f/1.4 SL-II lens.
Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. In addition, since the end of the lens is extended, you also get the added benefit of some extra protection from accidental impact.

The hood rest comfortably in hands and blend in seamlessly with the lens, it does protect the lens from accidental knocks and bumps, and it looks great with its shiny black color (same color with lens body). It is a little pricey, but it is worth it as the filter thread is very fine, firm and easy to lock and unlock. But then the only thing you have to be aware of is that you cannot use the lens cap anymore. My solution is to have a 67mm Tamron lens cap that fit nicely on "the hood itself". Having said this I cannot help but admire the beauty of the lens + Hood + D300 and the quality the lens delivers.
