The Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens is a spherical fisheye lens that easily captures a full 180° view in all directions, in a circular image. Even the most familiar and mundane of subjects can be portrayed with startlingly fresh new expressions through exaggerated perspectives and unusual distortion effects. It is well suited for academic and technical measurements such as solid angle measurements, cloud cover measurements & virtual reality.
Having the HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) incorporated into this lens allows for focusing to be quieter and more responsive. In addition, the HSM feature gives this lens the capability to auto focus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). This lens provides the equivalent focal range of approx. 6.75mm when used with a Nikon digital SLR camera (*).
DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.
Note! (*) Not compatible with 35mm cameras or digital cameras using full-size image sensors (e.g. D3, Kodak DCS14n or DCS PRO SLR/n).

Comments about Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
I'm using it in a research project on daylighting architectural space. The circular fisheye allows you to analyze the entire space in a glance...and it works seamlessly with my Nikon D5000. No down side.

Comments about Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
I purchased this lens to match a full-frame circular fisheye on a Nikon D300. This lens fits the bill.
The images are stunning and sharp. This is the only circular fisheye for less than a full frame sensor, but that is not the only reason to recommend it. It is a well made lens that delivers great results.
If you like fisheye photography and do not have a full frame camera, get this lens

Comments about Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
Sharp and light, but very expensive and too long (physically). The circle image is too small for the Nikon 1.4 magnification ratio as the lens was made for other models with a 1.6X ratio

Comments about Sigma 4.5mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
I get a full 360 degree pano with only three photos placed on a rotating pan head. Because it is a full 180 degrees using a DX type camera, you do not need shoot multiple rows with a QTVR head, thus saving you money. The picture quality is excellent. They have outdone themselves on this one.
