I use this on Manfrotto column stand to stabilize. This stand isn't easy to stabilize with a sand bag or a jug of water, due it its construction, but this weight works nicely - just attach to one of the legs.

I am currently using this as a counter-balance on an aluminum boom stand. I have to say "OVERKILL". I would lean towards a lighter version for such a use. I think I'll get a heavier duty boom stand to accommodate this bad boy.

I've got to be honest here. If you're looking to save money this is not the counter balance for you. Sandbags are far less expensive.
Having said that I like this weight because it clamps on to your stand or boom and stays put without swinging around. This is nice if you're moving your stand around a lot on location.
Handle with respect. Drop this one on your foot and you're likely to break some bones.
The finish is paint and it can and will scratch things if you're not careful how you transport it. Suggested improvement would be a rubber coating like you see on some nicer models of dumb-bells.

Comments about Manfrotto 022 Counter Balance Weight - 15 lbs:
good counterweight. I use it with the Bogen steel base convertable boom stand. I have to use an additional 7 lb counterweight sometimes. So you may want to think about getting a larger weight or additional weight if you are going to use it with the same boom stand depending on what kind of light you are going to put on it.

don't really have anything to compare it to except for the makeshift counterweights i've "created" in the past... but it gets the job done and looks a lot nicer.
