I am a casual user, and the camcorder has met all expectations. Simple to start up and use, and easy to download. The sound could be better, but is adequate for our "family home movie" usage.
Originally attempted to download vids to PC without installing the included JVC software. Video downloaded, but audio did not. Installed software, and now downloads fine.
Based on other reviews, we do not use the still photo option on the camcorder--we bought a Canon digital for stills, and we are very happy having both available.

This was a great purchase. This camera is small but not ridiculously small like some of the other new camcorders, so it fits well in your hand without too much shaking. For standard definition camcorder you get a lot of bang for your buck with this camera compared to the Canons and Panasonics. The things that I like the most about this camcorder are that: 1) you can get additional batteries with extra capacity, which some other small-factor cameras you can't, 2) You can record to the hard drive or to microsd (if you shop around you can get 8 GB microSD cards for 15 bucks a pop, not bad for extra 2 hrs of highest quality video). 3) The video quality is great and it is encoded in mpeg2 format which is ready for DVD. Now some people will say that this is a bad thing, but let's face it most people buying this camera will do little editing, which will mostly be clipping here and there and maybe adding some transitions. So, if you need to do a lot of editing you should be buying a higher end product anyway. If you want a more descriptive review make sure to check out the review at camcorderinfo.com . I also purchased the extended battery (VF815US) and the pack of three filters (Hoya starter kit). The circular polarizer filter is wicked cool!
