The Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC Lens is specially optimized for digital SLR cameras, and offers an "all-in-one" super-zoom lens solution. This version now incorporates a built-in motor, which gives it the capability to auto focus with all Nikon DSLR cameras (including the D40 and D40x). This lens provides the equivalent focal range of approx. 27-300mm when used with a Nikon digital SLR camera (*).
Its design incorporates aspherical lenses and SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass that provides the utmost correction for all types of aberrations and enables this extended super-zoom lens to be housed in a compact and lightweight construction.
DC lenses are exclusively designed for digital SLR cameras. The image circle (rear of lens) is made to match the smaller dimensions used for the image sensor on digital cameras. As a result these lenses are also more compact and lightweight, and are better matched to digital SLR cameras.
(*)Note: Not compatible with 35mm cameras or digital cameras using full-size image sensors (e.g. D3, Kodak DCS14n or DCS PRO SLR/n).

I replaced a returned Tamron 18-200 mm f/3.5-6.3 lens with this Sigma. I had original bought the Tamron as it was $30 cheaper and had a $50 rebate going. I relearned a very valuable lesson. You get what you pay for. The Tamron failed to report F-stops and after cleaning the contacts to solve that problem still refused to focus under nearly all lighting conditions. I returned after a week of attempting to make it work. By comparison, the Sigma is jewel to work with. Right our the box it fits well, interacts with my D90 as a AF lens should and the image quality with the lens is outstanding for a product at this price point. I tend to take shots in varying situations, low light, sports, landscape and portraits. In each case this lens focuses quickly, the image quality is superb and I am totally satisfied with the quality and performance of this lens. I can't say enough good about it.

I find it a little slower to focus and have any extremely hard time getting it to focus on close objects. Also, you can't leave the hood on without getting a shadow in the picture if the object is close.

For some one that just loves photography and is by no means a pro, this lens really delivers. Its not the quietest lens but it takes great photos with my Nikon D90. I recently used it to take photos for my brother in-laws wedding. It could be a little better in low light but with a flash you can still get great photos. Any one that is looking for an alternative lens than the kit lens that comes with the Nikons this is a great choice that wont break the bank.

I just got this lens last week and already love it. I use it with the Nikon D7000 and The results are great. The pictures are clear and crisp and having the 18-200 range is perfect for all shooting senarios. The construction of tis lenses seems to be durable and not made from cheap materials. The lens lock feature that keeps the lenses in a fixed location when not in use is a wonderful feature. The only negative is that it does not have image stabilization but what do you expect from a [$] lens. Overall great low priced lens.

I picked this lens up before backpacking through Nicaragua to avoid having to alternate between different zoom lenses. I feared I might have made a mistake not shelling out for the version with the optical stabilizer, but was happy to discover there was no need for it. I takes great pics in most out-door settings, but does struggle to focus in low light. The focus motor is a bit noisy also. A great lens all-round!!

I had been looking at this lens for over a year before my recent purchase. I had a feeling the price would drop and it did. This lens is a steal at the current price. I have used it for everything - portraits, sports, family gatherings, and the results are amazing. The build quality is excellent and the lens has nice extras like the zoom lock. I use it on my D50 and it makes for a nice, compact set-up. Totally satisfied with this purchase!

Comments about Sigma 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 II DC Lens for Nikon Digital SLR:
This lens is a magnificent buy, and certainly rivals that of the Nikkor and Tamron very well. I use this lens for specifically for skateboarding and other sports. I also use it for close up photography.
The glass is a particular favorite of mine, it is high quality and produces rich colors. I also value it's compact build, but ability to get a solid zoom.
Unfortunately, there are a few draw backs. There is a lot of lens creep in certain focal ranges. When zoomed in, there is a lot of image distortion. And perhaps worst of all the Very slow, noisy AF motor, I find it quite annoying.
I hope this helps!

When I purchased this lens I was looking to find a good replacement for the Nikon 18-105 VR that I borrowed from my father for several months. In hindsight I kind of wish I had thrown down the extra [$] for that lens. In comparison the Sigma is much noisier than the Nikon, especially if you focus in live view (I use a Nikon d5000). I am planning on using it during a wedding in a couple weeks and am concerned it will make too much noise during the ceremony. Also, you cannot fine tune the focus using the ring if you are in auto, the Nikon will. However, the Sigma is lighter and smaller than the Nikon and still takes great shots.

This is my first lens besides the kit lens, but I am extremely happy with it so far. It is the most lens I could get for the money. Quality seems very good. Picture quality seems very good, although I am only a novice and don't have much to compare it to. Hands down, for the money, I am very pleased with the lens and it's value. It focuses faster than I was hoping.

The lens seems to work well, but I can't see much discernable difference from my 18-135mm telephoto zoom. In that regard, it's disappointing.
