I use this product for personal weekend warrior stuff! This camcorder is small and light enough to fit in your pocket. It has very fast auto focus, and above average video and audio quality for a standard definition camcorder. It is unbeatable for the price, and makes me want to record more of my family's activities. It is also fun and simple to use. I shopped around for a long time before settling on the FS10...and I am satisfied with the purchase!

We are the training arm for a large insurance / reinsurance company. The cameras we bought are used for various "presentation skills" classes where students record a short presentation and then play it back to review and critique it.
Our primary consideration was ease of use for the instructor. Of course we also had secondary considerations like cost, quality of image, media cost, and availability of external mic jack (that mic jack is extremely rare with the current generation of cameras).
Overall we are pleased with the ease of use of the FS-10. We were hoping to be able to record the presentation, remove the memory stick, plug the stick in to a computer and review the presentation in a standard Windows media player. We got close to that ideal but found that we had to change the file extension of the recorded video file from .mod to .mpg so that the media player would recognize it. This is a little annoying because prior to purchase we were told by Canon that the files were written as .mpg files - they failed to mention that the file would have a mod extension. It is altogether pointless for Canon to handle the files this way and force you to either install their proprietary software or figure out the renaming trick like we did. It is an un-needed and undesired step (extra steps in the classroom are why we don't like DVD based cameras and the reason we stayed away from high def cameras).
Another issue we have with this line of cameras is the placement of the removable memory stick. It is in a very inconvenient position on the bottom of the unit. When the unit is installed on a tripod it is difficult to remove the memory card.
Overall the camera is a good value. It produces a fine image and has most of the features consumers would want.

Comments about Canon FS-10 8GB Flash Memory Camcorder:
What I like so far:
Ease of use - for basic recording - take it out of the box and you are good to go.
So small it really does fit in your pocket - why not take it everywhere and catch those candid moments.
Flash memory - so easy, portable, cheap.
What I don't like so far:
Learning curve for basic software functions needed to get your videos running on the computer. Maybe I will get more familiar with the product and it will be smoother - but so far - it is a process, not a 1-2-3 plug and play.
Low light recording isn't optimal. Before buying this model, I saw that reviewers had mentioned that low light recording was poor - I thought that that meant in night light and the like. If my regular fluorescents are on the picture is very slightly grainy. If I crank up halogens it is much better quality.

Comments about Canon FS-10 8GB Flash Memory Camcorder:
The first thing I thought when I opened the package and picked up the FS10 was "boy this baby is small and light and just holy cow what a change from the DV camera I owned previously!" I wasn't quite sure if I could get my hands used to something so small, but I've got to tell you it's fantastic -- so easy to just pick up and go. I really like the joystick control feature, instead of a touch screen. I don't have to worry about getting fingerprints on the screen!. Here in New England in the winter with gloves it's just so easy to operate with the joystick. The camera's start up is fast and within seconds you are ready to shoot some footage.
I absolutely LOVE the remote control. When I bought it, I wondered just how handy a remote control would be. Well let me tell you, it is one of the best features! I set the unit on a tripod, turn the screen to face me and can roll and pause and re-start easily without ever leaving my mark. I haven't yet found anything I dislike about the FS10. I'm still exploring all the settings regarding best low-light shooting, there are similar limitations and graininess on ALL low-light filming on comparably priced models.
I use Adobe Premiere for video editing and the .mod file extensions import easily into my Premiere projects. The zoom is fantastic and the battery life is excellent. Overall this little camera performs admirably and makes creating videos a snap!

Took this camera to Disney World and carried in shorts pocket. Didn't read any documentation prior to use. Charged battery and took it with me. Worked great.
Used Sonic software (not included, but already on PC) for playback onto PC. Not sure if it was the software or the camera, but the playback and DVD burn process was slow. But quality was great.

Comments about Canon FS-10 8GB Flash Memory Camcorder:
Camcorder is easy to use and is one of the only newer consumer cameras with an external microphone jack which makes it idea for recording church services and educational classes (main reason this model was purchased) I don't even use the included software. Just plug into the USB port and copy the files to my hard drive and change the extension (MOD -> mpg) and they are ready to make into DVDs with your favorite program so that you have menus and titles. Crisp, clear video and good sound, even with only the on board microphone. At this point I have no negatives except possibly the fact that the battery is an internal so you cannot replace it with a larger battery. On record the info says that you have about 184 minutes or 3 hours. Have not tested that out but on XP mode the record time is 1 hour 51 minutes so should not be a problem.

I have now used the camcorder for a few weeks and really like the ease of opperation. The picture quality is fine. The camera picture taking could use a few more pixals. It have plenty of memory space for most anything you will do with it. I did buy a card also which doubles the shooting time. I love the small compact size and placement of the buttons. For general video shooting I recomend this unit.

Comments about Canon FS-10 8GB Flash Memory Camcorder:
Image and audio are outstanding. Controls are excellent. I use a Mac and so their freebie editing software does not work on a Mac - then once you import the files to an Apple system you have to convert from their weird native format to something you can edit with iMovie (which actually supports virtually all the 'normal' formats.) This extra step is time consuming and irritating but the resulting video is good. I would give this camera five stars if it were not for the output data format issue. Even if I did use a PC I doubt I would use a free video editor for long on that platform either and I would be back to the file translation issue. This is mostly a time and convenience issue since there are sources on the web for conversion software that is free.

Going to be using for taking video while boating on the lake. So far, takes decent video, but not so hot still pictures, but then again, I bought it for the video capabilities.
