The built-in mics on the HF-100 / HF-10 / HF-11 are, to be blunt, incapable of good sound ( self-noise AND handling-noise ).

Excellent camcorders, but good grief, are they hobbled by their sound, as ALL such camcorders are.

This mic provides 3 modes,
mono-Shotgun,
stereo-90-degree, &
stereo-120-degree.

For video, you probably want the stereo-90-degree mode most of the time.

It's got a built-in shock-mount, in its stem.

It's got significantly less self-noise than the built-in mics.

Compare, however, with the only slightly more expensive Rode Stereo VideoMic, and I *think* you'll find the Rode much better ( I haven't got both here at the same time to compare, unfortunately ).

Had I the option, the resources, and the time ( before this particular project ), I'd have got both ( and a tripod-mount-to-hotshoe-bracket, to mount the Rode on, since Canon's gone over to the Dark Side with their proprietary hot-shoes ), and compared 'em directly against each other, then returned the poorer-sounding one.

Do I regret spending this much money on the DM-100?

No: I NEED better sound than what the camcorder mics provide, and this makes a big difference.

I do have to keep the levels low ( so the background noise *just barely* nibbles at the bottom of the on-screen meter ), to minimize the self-noise, somewhat, though, and that means less signal to work with in post.

Ideally? I'd have got a good UHF Wireless system with lavs, but that'd cost MUCH more.

Or, I coulda got the Sony ECM-957 & just wired it to the camcorder ( stereo-mini extension cable ), and had MUCH better sound, though I'd have picked up every sound for a quarter mile, with that little gem
and been stuck with the wire & the mic-stand & shock-mount, which wouldn't work in many situations...

It's directional, it's selectable pattern, it fits the camcorder, it's compact, it automatically fixes a couple of menu-entries when plugged onto the camera ( no Wind Suppression setting available with it on -- use the softie it comes with ), it doesn't require extra batteries, it communicates to whom you're recording that you're serious ( worth a bit, that :), and it improves sound noticeably.

Worth it, but consider the alternatives
( Rode Stereo VideoMic $,
Audio-Technica Stereo Shotgun mics + shockmount + adapter $$,
UHF Wireless + Lav $$$, etc )

Nice to have this as an optional to the small mics on the HF10 camera. The directional settings works, but not as good as it should be on this microphone. The wind-shield is nice. The construction looks a bit weak. There should be a better mic for this small hot-shoes also. Make sure that you fasten the mic enough when using it.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

We had trouble with wind noise and extraneous sounds when filming interviews of people outside in public places. This mic improves the sound quality.

It is easy to install and uninstall on our Canon Vixia HF200 and it automatically overrides the internal mic.

And people love to comment on the cuteness of the furry cover.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

Although costly compared to similar performing microphones, the DM-100 easily attached to Vixia camcorders without the use of wire connections and the camcorder automatically recognizes it thru the proprietary hot-shoe. Good performance, but it does come at a price.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

I bought this DM-100 mic to record stage productions from the lighting/sound booth 80 feet from the stage. I connected it to the hot-shoe on my Canon Vixia Hi-Def HG20 camcorder.

A rehearsal video, without the PAC sound system operating, picked up the cast with remarkable clarity in shotgun mode.

I'm very happy with my decision to purchase it, and B&H delivered it on time.

I had also purchased the Canon camcorder from B&H a few years earlier, so I knew I would get great service from them.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

The directional mic got immediate use, recording my son's flag football game. It seems well made, and did a great job capturing both the action and sideline chatter, plus it effectively blocked out the wind. In addition, it was simple to install on the camcorder. I'm very happy with the purchase, and experience of buying it from B&H.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

I'm a video professional, so most of my shooting is done for a paying client.

When I bought this Mic, it was for a sports-related shoot where a lavalier Mic would have picked up too much rustling from clothing, etc. and a boom mic wouldn't have captured all of the sounds from the actions on the screen.

The DM-100 Mic, though inexpensive, did an excellent job of capturing all of the action in front of me, canceling out extraneous noises that happened out of the shot, thus preventing me from having to do a lot of audio processing during the editing phase of the project. Kudos to Canon for making a killer mic!

In general I am pleased with this device, care should be taken as the mount is somewhat delicate. I would recommend this to a friend.

There is hardly a shot that I don't film with my directional microphone attached. I also have the light attachment, but I've learned how to shoot in aperture priority so that I don't have to sacrifice on the sound.

I recently had to use this microphone with the "wind breaker" installed on a windy day (30 mph sustained). It was attached to a canon HF G10. Although the wind produced a low rumble background sound, the dialog came through and was easily understood.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

This mic is essential to improve the audio quality of Canon's small video HD cameras.

I have noticed that they can be susceptible to breaking at the base where you mount the microphone to the cable. Just be careful and do not force it.

Despite the large fuzzy wind blocker, it cuts the wind well and helps improve the sound of the video.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

I have only used this once and doubt I'll ever use it again. It has no detectable directionality at all despite being marketed at a premium price as a "hypercardiod" microphone that should have 60 Db of rejection from the sides and I find myself lucky to get a tenth of that. Frequency response is also weak at the bottom and top of the spectrum. Total waste of money! It's best use is not to be bought at all. If you are willing to carry around a little more hardware (two professional supercardiod microphones similar to the Electro-voice nd-767 or shure sm57's and a beachtek DXA-2T XLR line/mic level converter with 3.5 mm stereo mic level output. Then all you need are cables and stands and you might be able to reject unwanted noise fron the rear and sides as well as capture the entire range of sound instead of zero improvement from standard internal mics.

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

This microphone will take your camcorder to the next level, allowing you to capture the sound at the source as if you are there. The shotgun setting gives you zoom recording with very little sound leakage from outside the zone allowing you to match audio and video zoom. Great for speeches, street interviews, and recording performances. all those long distance jobs that are plagued with extranious noise sources.
the sound quality is good to excellent on all settings and the wind shield works without damping sound. The only worry I have is with the hot shoe connector, the metal contacts are easily bent or broken off. Take care! Canon, how about a plastic slipper to protect the contacts when not in use?

Comments about Canon DM-100 Directional Stereo Microphone:

I bought this microphone for my camera Canon HF100. Simple and necessary thing. The workmanship is very good. In this Canon as always on top! Works expected. Of course, this can not be compared with a microphone, which has a wire to length and it is always about the person whom you are shooting at the moment, but that is not to be expected from this microphone. In general, a very powerful one, if you need to improve the sound quality. The sound it records exactly better than built-in microphones, another question - whether this improvement is the money that ask for it. It's up to you. And one more nuance to those who are going to buy it - keep in mind that in the mode of the gun, he wrote only mono sound, stereo modes, is possible only when 120 and 90 degrees.

This is my second DM-100 which I use with my Canon Vixia HF S10. Some prongs on my first one snapped off the mini-shoe making it useless, probably from putting in and out of my vacation bag in Spain while still attached. No repair service for it, so had to buy a new one You're limited to this mic if you want a shotgun with hot shoe. It has excellent sound quality. Used it making a documentary last year. Wind screen a must when shooting outdoors. If you go to Gibralter, it will attract the monkeys. Also little boys in Jordan!
